JOHN PETRI, OF ELBERTA, ALABAMA.
PORTABLE FENCE.
T 0 all a0/wm it may concern Be it known that I, JOHN Pn'rRi, a subject of the King of Hungary, residing at Elberta, in the county of Baldwin and State of Alabama, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Fences, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in portable fences,
The primary object of the device is to provide a fence structure that is easy and cheap to manufacture and at the. same time is adapted for readily changing' its position from one course or direction to another.
A further object is to provide a. portable fence post having a plurality of line wires secured thereto and adapted for hooking engagement with the adjacent post and also supplied with a shiftable brace member foldable within the post body.
A still further object is to provide a fence structure consisting of a plurality of posts, each of which carries the requisite fence line wires and braces and each post being capable of individually maintaining its normal supporting position in the assembled fence structure.
Vith these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a fence em bodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pivoting end of the fence brace with the pivot pin. Fig. t is a detail perspective view of a portion of a post having a brace secured therein, and, Fig. 5 is a similar view with one of the side portions of the post broken away.
Referring more in detail to the drawings, it is designed to employ a plurality of posts 10 formed with anchoring bases 11 and whereby the posts may be positioned at any desired place in a field and be normally maintained in an upright position. The present post is preferably formed of U-bars or channel-bars xedly mounted in the bases 1l, which lat-ter may be made from metal,

cement, or any other desired material. Each of the posts 10 has a plurality of line wires 12 attached to one corner thereof, preferably by tying the same through corner perforations 13 while said wires so secured to the posts are of equal length, being sufficient to have their free ends engage hook members 14 carried by the adjacent face of the next succeeding post employed in the fence construction. Brace struts 15 are adapted for spanning and bracing two adjacent posts and are provided with central longitudinal slots 16 for receiving the pin 17 which spans the space between the side flanges of the post. By this structure it will be evident that each post has secured thereto the requisite number of line wires 12, the free ends of which are engaged with the hooks 14 of the next succeeding post, whileI the brace 15 of the post is adapted for an arcuate swinging movement downwardly in contact between the two posts and thereby sufficiently stretching the line wires to impart stability to the structure. It is evident that when positioned for use as shown in Fig. 1, the brace 15 may be moved forwardly upon its pivot 17 and wit-hin the space 18 of the carrying post and then allowed to drop vertically and centrally within the post space 18 until the slotted end of the brace rests upon the post base l1, and whereby it will be apparent that a compact structure is provided for a portable fence member. It will also be seen that the lower corner 19 of the brace when positioned horizontally as best shown in Fig. 5, is squared for engaging t-he rear web of the post and thereby positioning the brace horizontally and preventing its further downward pivotal movement while the opposite or upper corner 20 of said brace end is rounded suiiiciently to allow clearance when the brace is upwardly pivoted for assuming its closed or knocked down position.
For dis-assembling, the brace 15 of each post is foldable within its carrying post, which thereby releases the tension upon the line wires, and these are then readily unliooked from the adjacent post and wound around the carrying post with its strut inclosed therein.
While the forms of the invention herein shown and described are what are believed to be `preferable embodiments thereof, it is nevertheless to be understood that various forms and modifications thereof may be had vwithout departing tree; the spirit and Scope et the invention es claimed.
