Ile it known that I, Waimaa Jenn FORD, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in Deptford, London, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in or Relatin to Safes, Money-Boxes, and the like, of \V lllClI the following is a specification.

This invention relates to safes, money boxes and the like and has particular reference to what is known as slot mechanism for use therewith, this mechanism comprising a tilting platform for the coins, arranged contiguous to the slot in the safe through which the coins are inserted.

The chief object of: the present invention is to so construct the slot mechanism that while iermitting the free entry of a coin into the sa e or box, it will more effectively prevent the money from'being surreptitiously extracted than heretofore.

According to this invention, the aforesaid tilting latform is under the control of a safety evice which moves with a manually operated shutter for closing the coin slot in the safe, in such manner that unless the shutter is in the closed position the safety de vice prevents the platform from beiin depressed. For this purpose the safety evice may be in the form of an inclined lip or projection which moves with the shutter, and cooperates with the platform to prevent it from being depressed when the shutter is being moved to and from its closed position, but when the shutter is closed, occupies a position to render the platform free to tilt and permit the coin thereon to enter the safe. In order to prevent the possibility of a wire being inserted through the coin slot when the shutter is nearing its closed position for the purpose of depressing the platform and extracting the coins, a tongue or the like may be provided inside the safe contiguous to the end of the slot representing the closed position of the shutter. This tongue may be of an suitable length and is so arranged that tie shutter overlaps it during that period of its movement when the aforesaid lip or projection is releasing the tilting platform.

In order that the said invention may be clearly understood and readily carried into effect the same will be described more fully with reference to the accompanying draw ings in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of the upper portion of a safe showing the aforesaid shutter half open. Fig. 2 is a transverse section. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal section and Fig. l, is a sectional plan (viewed from below) showing the improved mechanism which is represented in the position it occupies when the shutter is fully closed.

A represents the casing of the safe and A the slot through which the coins are inserted.

B represents the tilting platform which is mounted on a pivot pin B carried in lugs C of a crown piece C riveted or otherwise attached to the underside of the top of the safe.

D represents the aforesaid shutter rotatably mounted on the crown piece C and having a slot 1) which, when the shutter is in the open position registers with the slot A The said shutter is provided with an external finger piece (1 by means of which it is actuated to cove and uncover the coin slot A. The said shutter also carries the aforesaid lip or projection D which, as is shown in Fig. 3, is inclined in such a manner that it lies more or less pa 'allel to the platform when the latter is 111 its um'cstrained and tilted position (11. a. when the shutter is fully closed) and permits the platform to rock about the pivot pin 13 into the position shown in full lines in Fig. On moving the said lip or projection from the position shown in Fig. 23, in the act of opening the coin slot, it will tilt the platform into the position shown by broken lines and positively hold it in that position. The portion of the shutter that is immediately in rear of the platform when the shutter is in the closed position is preferably extended as shown at (1* in Fig. 3, to form av screen, the said extension being of such a length that it leaves a gap 0 between its lower end and the platform which is no wider than is required to enable the largest coin intended to be used to pass therethrough. In this manner it is rendered diillcult for the coins already in the safe to be surreptitiously caused to reach the upper side of the platform and be thereby extracted.

Claims:

1; Coin slot mechanism comprising a tilting platform, a manually-operated revolublymountcd shutter closing the coin slot and meansfon said shutter preventing the tiltingof'the platform until the shutter is closed.

2. Coin slot mechanism comprising a tilta manually-operated revolubly-mounted shutterclosing the coin slot, and a lip upon said shutter preventing the tilting of the platform until the shutter is closed. 7

4, Coin slot mechanism comprising a tiltingfplatform, a manually operated shutter closing .the coin slot, a lip inclined so that it lies parallel to the tilting platform when the latter is opened preventing the tiltin of the platform until the shutter is elosed and an extension on the shutter at the rear of the platform to prevent the passage of coins, larger than those of a predetermined value.

Coin slot mechanism'comprising a tilting' platform, ears upon the underside of said platform, a body secured to the top of the box having a peripheral wall, ears upon said Well, a pivot passing through the ears on the tilting platform and on the wall, a shutter for the coin slot comprising a circular revoluble body having at. its upper end an inwardly directed flange engaged by the body on the top of the box, a vertical wall upon the revoluble body, a lip upon said body engaging the underside of the platform, and a'projection on said body extending through the coin slot.

Coin slotmechanism comprising a. tilt ing platform, ears upon the underside of said platform, a body secured to the top of the box having a peripheral wall forming an abutment for the rear of the tilting platform to limit its upward movement, on upon said wall, a pivot passing through the ears on the tilting platform and on the wall, a shutter 'forthe coin slot comprising a circular revoluble body having at its upper end an inwardly directed flange engaged by the body on the top of the box, a vertical wall upon the revoluble body, a lip upon said body cngaging-the underside of the platform, and a projection upon said body extending through the coin slot.

7. Coin slot mechanism comprising a tilting platform, ears upon the underside of said platform, a body secured to the top of the box having a peripheral wall forming an iabutment for the rear of the tilting platform to limit. its upward movement, cars upon said wall, a pivot passing through the ears on the tilting platform and on the wall, a shutter for the coin slot comprising a circular revoluble body having at. its upper end an inwardly directed flange engaged by the body on the top of the box, a vertical 'wall upon the revoluble body, a lip upon said body engaging the underside of the platform, a projection upon said body extending through the coin'slot, and an extension on the rear part. of the wall of the shriter forming a screen whereby the passage of coins of larger size than those of a 1 redetermined value is prevented.
