l ful Improvements in Blanks for Self-Locking Nuts, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to improvements .1n blanks for self-locking nuts, and has for its object they provision of a device of this character which may be readily and cheaply made and which may, in a single ressing operation, be converted into an effective selflocking nut. .v
Thecharacteristic of my improyedblank is the fact that the use of spec1al 1mple ments, during the pressing y operatlon, to keep the threaded opening or aperture of the nut clear, so as not to impair the c apability of the nut to receive a bolt entirely therethrough, is obviated.
The details in the construction and arrangement of my improved blank will be apparent from the specific description hereinafter lcontained when read in connection with the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, and wherein the preferred embodiment of the invention is illustrated;

Referring more particularly to the drawings, wherein like reference characters designate corresponding parts in the several views, A represents-the body of the blank formed of metal and of suitable contour provided with a bore or central opening B, and

In completing the selflocking nut from my blank as above defined, pressure is applied to the outer surface of the boss C to cause the metal to' be compressed and flow axially and radially of the nut, resulting in the pressing of the adjacent upper convolutions of the interiorly threaded body closer together than the distance between the convolutions of the remaining threaded portion separated convolutions on the bolt,
Heretofore when pressure has been applled to the outer surface of an enlargement or boss on a nut of the generalv character..
here in question, a mandrel or lstem has been placed on the interior of the nut prior to the pressing operation to prevent the iiowing of the metal into the open portion or above the open portion of the nut, thus obstructingthe passage therethrough, but this is obviated in my blank by reason of the fact that the boss, while arranged directly above the threaded interior of the nut, is formed to uniformly recede outwardly and away from the threads `or bore in the body, so that the inward or The bore B is threaded to constitute radial flowing of the metal under the com-- L pression of the boss simply fills thespace normally within the tapering inside of the v boss and not in or'over the central apertured portion of the nut.
The operation has other advantages so far as effects the completed nut, as reducing the depth of the outer or terminal'portion of the thread so that where the thread is finest it is of less depth than the relative depth of the inner convolutions ofthe j.

While I have herein disclosed a blank constituting a special embodiment of my invention, it will be apparent to persons skilled in the art 4that the invention is capable of embodiment inY other forms and devices as may be in keeping with the hereto appended claims.

A blank for self locking nuts comprising a metal base portion having a threaded bolt aperture, and a boss projecting outwardly from the central portion of said base portion, the boss being of substantially less width than the major portion of the base and adapted to be displaced independently of the latter, the aperture in the base registering with an outwardly larin opening formed 4by inclining the inner sur ace of the boss from the end thereof inwardly to the swall of the aperture,vsubstantially as described. i'
2. A blank for self locking nuts comprising a'base portion having a threaded bolt aperture and a boss projecting outwardly from the central portion of said base portion, the boss being of substantially less width than the major portion of the base and adapted tobe displaced independently of the latter, said boss being formed on its inner lsurface to recede to a substantial extentaway' from the" thread inthe wall of the aperture registering with the opening on the interior of the boss.
. 3. A blank for selflocking nuts comprising a base portion having a threaded bolt aperture, and a projection adjoining Isaid aperture and extending outwardly from the central portion of the base portion, the boss being of substantially less width than the major portion of the base and adapted to be displaced independently of the latter, said projection having its inner face formed to i recede to a substantial extent away from the thread in the wall of the aperture to the end of the blank, substantially as described.
4. 6. A blank .for self locking nuts comprising a base portion having a bolt aperture and a projection adjoining said aperture extending outwardly froin the central portion of the base portion, the boss being of substantially less width than the major portion of the base and adapted to be displaced independently ofthe latter, said projection having its inner face formed to recede a substantial extent away from the wall of the aperture to the end of the blank, the blank being inwardly threaded from the bolt aperture but not through that portion of the projection adjoining the relatively enlarged space constituted thereby and which recedes away from th thread. x

A blank for self locking nuts comprising a base portion having a bolt. aperture and a projection adjoining said aperture and extend-ing outwardly from the .central portion of the base portion, 4the boss being of substantially less width than the major portion of the base and adapted to be displaced independently of the latter, said projection having a broad inner portion adjoining the bolt aperture and an outer portion receded a substantial extent away from the wall of the a erture, the blank being vinteriorly threa ed through the bolt aperture but not through that portion of the projection adjoining the relatively enlarged space constituted thereby and which recedes away from the thread so that the projection when compressed will affect the threads in the base therebelow but will not low into the,l aperture. i
