VACUM-CLEANER .ATTACIHIYIEZN'I FORCARPET-SWEEPERS.
Specification of Letters latent.
`Application iled .T une 6, 1912. Serial N o. 701,963;
Beit known that I, EDMUNDJ.` FEENY, residing at Muncie, inthe county of Delaware and State of Indiana, have invented anew and useful l Vacuum-Cleaner `Attachment for Carpet- Sweepers, fication.
. partsin section, of a pneumatic cleaner ofwhich the following is a speci- Itis the objectiof my invention to provide :a vpneumatic cleaner which can be, and is4 combined with an ordinary carpet sweeper of the rotary brush type. j By this combination it is found that excellent. results can be produced. y
The accompanying drawing lllustrates my invention. 1
Figure 1- is a side elevation, wlth some and carpet sweeper embodying my' invention; Fig.'2 isa plan of the lower parts of such cleaner andv carpet sweeper; Fig. 3 is a detail of the mounting of the mat-ic mouth-piece/on the carpet4 sweeper; and Fig,` 4 is a section on the line 4'4 of Fi 2;!"5'
'fhe'earpet sweeper 10 may be of any com- .'Either the upper end of the 'usual pivotedhandlell of suchzcarpet 1S I'O- and ori-'the upper end of ysuch s ort by a clamp 'l2. The upper d ofl this tube is connected4 to' a hollow piistnklll having two anges15'\between\which a loose iitting picking ring 16, of less/ axial length than t 'e distance between inside' of a cylinder 171novable by a handle 18 along the tribali/13andapo-aizi metal tube 19 connected to the uppemsicle, of the hollwgrpistoi114 and-open `at the' upper end.
The upper end ofthe tube '19 is'preferably curved to `form a handle 20. The space within the hollow piston 14 is divided b y a wall 14; into two chambers 21 and 22. The
chamber 21 communicates directly .with the Aupper end ofthe tube 13 and by opening valves 23 sides of the piston The chamber 22 communicates directly with the lower end of the tube 19, and by an opening 24 in the piston 'wall and the space between the packingring 16 and that one of the anges 15 with which said ring is not in engagement outwardly with the spaces on the two other of. the
pneul thev flanges 15, is lo-v cated- The ring 16 ts `rvclosely against the with 14 within the cylinder 17 with the space on oneside or the piston 14. Thusthemovement of the cylinder 17 along the'l tubes .'13, and 19 produces a double-acting pump operation, drawing in air through the Vtube charging it through the tube `19.
The lower end of the metall tube 13 is connected by a flexible tube 30 to the'discharge tube 31y This mouth-piece comprisesA a horizontal substantially 'cylindrical' casing. 33 provided on its under yside with lfioor-engaging` extension 34 open at the bottom,vas shown in Flgi'e. One end ofthe cylinder33lis'provided with a removable cap35, which when removed allows theremoval ofa frame 36 which fits closelyginto the casing 33v and is covered with a fabric bag y37.` The closed 13 and disof the pneumatic mouth-piece 432.
end of such bag is inverted within thev frame 36, as shown linlFig. f1 and is provided with a strap 38by which it mayl bepulled .out for cleaning purposes,
The discharge tube 31 is near-that endof the casing 33 which is provided with the cap 35, andthe frame 36 is sho-rter than the casing and kwhen inplace reaches from theother end' of the casing 33 nearly lto the` discharge tube A31th'e communicating 4opening between the Hoorengaging-extension 34 and the casing 33 lengtho'f the frame 36, as shown i'n Fig. 4. Thus'any airfdrawn in .through the floorenga ing Aextensionl 34 byA reciprocating the cylin er 17 .necessarily air is removed bythe fabric.
