.exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in rail joints and the primary object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will eliminate the use of bolts, nuts, fishplates and the like which are usedon most rail joints now in use.
Still another object of the invention re-' sides in providing a construction in connection with the rail sections which affords interlocking engagement between said sec-- tions.

rail sections which are adapted to be brought into abutting relation to one another and which are designed for interlocking engagement, each in itself forming a portion of my improved rail joint structure. The tread 3 of the rail section 1 terminates some distance short of the end of this section thus producing a web extension and the base flanges of this rail section extend to the end of the web. The web of this section is transversely enlarged in I thickness as indicated at 4 and this enlarged portion extends to a point a short distance beyond the end of the tread 3. This enlarged web portion 4, however, is slotted on each side of the web extension said slotted portions being indicated at 5 and the same extend to points a short distance under the tread 3. The opposite rail section 2, has the web thereof increased or enlarged transversely as seen at 6 such portion extending for the greater portion of its length, and the base flanges of this section terminate some distance short of the end of said section, thus forming a shoulder 7 for abutment against the. end of the section 1. The tread 8 of this rail section 2 .terminatesjust short of the end of the web of this section thus providing a terminal engaging portion of the web at. this section and the web of this section is slotted cen trally as shown at 9 whereby to receive the web extension of the first mentioned section 1 therein. By slotting the complete web as described, the projecting portions of said web form, as statedabove, terminal engaging portions indicated at 10 and these portions have the outer faces thereof slightly reduced whereby to be readily received in the slotted portions 5 of the first mentioned section. When this rail section 2 has been lowered, the shortened base flange thereofwilljabut the base flangev Y ofthelrail section 1 and a completeirail will thus beformed, the sections of which are so I interlocked one with the other asto prevent any possible disengagement thereof. The interlocking of. the sections-of the rail is such i as to prevent any possible lateral or longiu tudin'al movementthereof and the abutment "between tlie'sections is 'so'close as to rovide a perfect fitting rail joint whereby t e usual 'creased transversely and slotted for a dpornoise incident to the rolling of cars over joints in rails willbe eliminated in the use of this device.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have provided a simple, inexpensive, and efficient means for carrying out the objects of theinvention and while I have particularly described the elements best adaptedto perform the functions set forth, it is obvious that various changes in form, proportion and the minordetails of construction may be resorted to, within the scope of the appended claims, without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the principles of the invention.
, Havingthus described my invention, what I claim is:
1. In a rail joint, a railsection having the "tread terminating short ofthe end thereof, the web thereof avingspaced longitudinal channels therein adjacent the'end of the tread, a, complementary rail section having the base flanges thereof terminating short of the end thereof, the web of said complementary section being slotted for the greater portion of its length to receive the treadless web of the first mentionedrail section therechannels of the first mentioned section, and

tion'therein, the end of saidslotted web extending beyond-the end oi the rail and re.- duced from the outer faces thereof to form terminal'engagingribs for reception in the spaced longitudinal channels of the first mentioned section, and means formed in connection with said webs for the interlockmg of said sections whereby to prevent the longitudinal movement of the same with respect to one another.
4. In a rail joint, a rail sectionhaving the tread terminating short of one end thereof, the Web of said section adjacent the end of the tread being provided with spaced longitudinal channels, a complementary section having the base flanges thereof terminating short of one end, the web of said last mentioned section being slotted to receive the treadless web of the first mentioned section therein, terminal extensions formed on said complementary section for reception in the spaced longitudinal channels of the first mentioned section, the inner walls of the slotted web of said complementary section being provided with a pair of oppositely spaced grooves, and p ojections formed on the outer faces of the web of the first mentioned section adapted to be received in the grooves of said complementary section, whereby to interlock said sections one with the other.
5. In a rail joint, a rail section having a tread terminating short of one end thereof, the Web of said rail section being increased adjacent the termination of the tread and provided with a air of spaced longitudinal channels, plate-like pro'ections formed on the outer faces of the web of said section adjacent the outer edge thereof, the inner edges of said projections being concaved and the outer edges thereof being convexed, a complementary rail section having the base flanges thereof terminating short of one end of the same, the web of said last mentioned section bein also increased transversely and slotted for 51c. greater portion of its length to receive the treadless Web of the first mentioned section therein, the inner walls of the slotted web of said last mentioned section being also increased transversely, the inner faces walls of the slotted web of said last men tioned section being provided with grooves adjacent the inner ends of said slotted portion, said grooves being designed coincident with the outline of said projections on the other section for the reception of the latter therein, and terminal projections formed on the web of the last mentioned section adapted to be received in the longitudinal channels of the first mentioned section.
6. In a rail joint, a rail section having a tread terminating short of one end thereof, the web of said section adjacent the end of the tread thereof being transversely increased and provided with spaced longitudinal channels, a complementary section having the base flan es thereof terminating short of one end of t e same and also having the web increased transversely and slotted for a portion of its length to receive the treadless web of the other section therein, the end of said slotted web extending beyond the end of the rail to form terminal engaging plates to be received'in the spaced channels of the first mentioned section, the inner walls of the slotted-portion of said complen'ientary section being provided with a pair of oppositely spacing grooves, the end walls of said grooves being designed arcuately, and
plate-like projections formed on the outer of the web of the first mentioned section adapted to be received in the grooves of the complementary section, the edges of said rojections being designed coincident to the out-line of the end walls of said grooves whereby said projections will fit snugly in the grooves and form interlocking means between the sections of the rails.
