Zh all whom 'it may concern Be it known that l, Jason H. Gnn'rsn, a citizen of the United-States, and a resident of Newburgh, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Automatic Annunciator, of which the following` a full, clear, and exact description. l
The invention relates to projecting apparatus for projecting pictures or other subject matter on a screen, wall, sidewalk or other surface.
The object of the invention is to provide a' new and improved automatic annunciator arranged to announce time and legends representing advertisement or titles to vaudeville acts, or titles for moving pictures and t 1e like.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a projecting apparatus, a slide in the ield of the proj ccting apparatus and provided with a time dial, point-ers in the field of the said projecting apparatus and arranged in indicating position relative to the said time dial to be projected with the time dial onto a distant surface to indicate the time of the day or night, and
a timepiece for turning the said pointers in conformity With time.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure l is a sectional side elevation of theannunci'ator on the line 1 1 of Fig. 2; Fig. 2 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 2--2 of Fig. l; Fig. 3 is a cross section of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig. l; Fig. 4 is an enlarged cross section ot' the same on the line 4 4 of Fig. l and showing more particularly the mechanism for turning the pointers around; Fig. 5 is a sectional side elevation of the same on the line 5-5 of Fig. 4; and Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional side ,elevation of the actuating mechanism ton the slide carrier.
In carrying out thednvention use is made of a projecting apparatus A having a casing A in which is mounted an objective or projecting lens B and a source oi light It) coacting in coniunction with a reflector D lfor reiecting the rays of light parallel to the objective or projecting lens B. A. The casing Af is removably held on a' bracket E attached to a Wall, post or o er suitable support and having a rod E passing through an apertured boss A held in the bottom of the casing The boss n.2 is provided with a set screw E2 adapted to'engage the rod E so as to securely fasten the casing A on the rod E of the bracket E. Vithinthe casing el of the projecting apparatus A is mounted to rotate intermittently a s ide carrier F, preferably in the form of a skeleton wheel provided at its peripheral face with guideways F for the reception of removable slides G containing the sub-- ject mattei' to be projected by the projecting apparatus onto a distant screen, wall, sidewalk or other surface. By reference to Figs. il and *2, it will be noticed that the source of light D and the reiector D are arranged within the slide carrier F in such a manner that the slides G move successively into the iield oi? the projecting apparatus, that is, "ctween the reflector D and the objective B.
The slide carrier F is rotated intel-mitA tently at the option of the operator in charge so as to permit of displaying the subject matter of the slide G, in active position at the time, any desired lengthof time, and for this purpose the following arrangement is made; The slide carrier F is provided with a hub F2 mounted to rotate loosely on a shaft H attached to the t.door or cover A on one side of the casing A', and on the said hub F2 is secured a gear wheel I (see Figs. :2 and G) in mesh With a gear wheel l secured on a transversclyextending shaft l2 journaled in suitable bearings arranged on a bracket A attached to or torn'iing part of the door A3. On the shaft. l2 is secured a ttiothed Wheel J engaged by an escapement levend fulcrumed at J2 on the bracket At. The escapement lever d is provided with an arm J3 entending between two pins K held on an armature lever K fulcrumed loosely on the shaft If. '.ihe armature lever K is adapted to be swung downward by the action otl a pair of electro-magnetsL when the latter are energized, and a spring K2 connected with the free end of the armature lever K serves to swing the armature lever K upward whenever the electro-magnets L are denergif/ed. The electro-magnets L are in an electric circuit L provided with a battery or other source of electrical energy L2 and withn` switch L3 under the control of an operator at any desired distant point. llvlhen the switch L3 is closed the electrodownward, and when the switch is opened g the electro-magnets L are delnerggized to? allow the spring,` K2 to swing the armature i lever K upward. @n the armature lever li i is fulcrumed a pawl 'lia adapted to engage f the teeth oi. the wheel .,l, and the said pawl K3 is pressed on by spring lit attached to the lever l lo hold the pawl in engage ment with the wheel d'. New VTlien the armature K is swimg downward the pawl K guides over the teeth of the Wheel J and at the same time the armature lever K actuales the eseapem-ent lever il by the piu K so as to release the wheel J, and when the lever K swings upward the pawl l@ turns die wheel il until the escapement lover J again locks the wheel .l against further -rotation.\\.it will be noticed that when the wheel l is rotated in the direction of the arrow o thena rotaif,r .uiotionis given. by the gear wheels l and I to the slide carrier F so that the next following' slide G is moved into the field of the projecting apparatus. t is understood that the switch La opened and. closed .as often as is necessary for turning` the slide carrier F sufiieientlyY far to move the next following slide Gr, or any other slide, into the field of the projecting apparatus.
Each of the slides G is provided with a legend Cf or with picture or with any other desirable subject matter to be projected (see Fig. l), and each slide G is also provided with a time dial G2 l'iaving ,la graduation and numerals indicating hours and minutes so that this dial. is projected with the subject matter G onto the distant surface.
An hour ointer N and a minute ointer N extend into the lield of the projecting apparatus A and are arranged in indicating position relative to the time dial Gr2 to be. projected with the time dial onto the distant surface to indicate time.
