HAND-PUMP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed July 19, 1912. Serial No. 710,525. c
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE W. COOPER a citizen of the United States, residing at Union City, in the county of Canadian,
I an improved and simple form of operating mechanism by which a maximum amount of water may be pumped with a minimum expenditure of labor, the device being con structed to avoid lost motion.
With the above and other objects in view the invention consists of certain other combinations and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed, it being a still further object of the invention to provide a device which will not be likely to get out of working order.
In the drawings :-Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved pump. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view thereof. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the pump. Fig. 4. is an enlarged sectional view on the line 4.-4: of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detail view of the slotted plate used in connection with the device.
Referring to the drawings in detail, there is shown a pump stand 10 having the usual spout 11 and head portion 12, the same being adapted to be supported upon a base 13 over a well. A piston rod 14 operates within a pump cylinder 15 and has a piston 16 at its lower end operating within the cylinder to admit water to the cylinder above the piston upon the downward stroke thereof and lift the water to be discharged through the spout 11 as the piston is raised.
In order to actuate the piston rod, the enlarged portion 12 of the pump stand is provided with a vertical extension 17 at one side thereof diametrically opposite relative to the spout and has an offset upper bifurcated portion forming apertured cars 18. A11 operating handle 19 is pivotally mounted intermediate its ends between the cars 18 as shown at 20 and has its short arm connected to an upwardly extending portion 21 of a slotted plate 22, the latter plate having a longitudinal slot 23 therethrough and having a depending portion 24 which is pivotally connected to the pump rod.
A cog gear 25 is rotatably journaled upon a shaft 26 in the upright 17 upon its inner face and carries an eccentric pin 27 provided with an enlarged head portion and carrying a sleeve 28 over which the slotted plate is fitted. A pinion 29 is rotatably mount-ed in a shaft 30 below the shaft 26 and is engaged by the teeth of the cog gear '25 so as to lmpart rotation to said shaft and to a weighted fly wheel 31 mounted upon its opposite end so as to assist in the operation of the pump after it has been started and to insure even motion thereof.
In the operation of the device the handle 19 is reciprocated vertically causing a reciprocation of the slotted plate 22 and as the pin 27 is mounted e'ccentrically upon the cog gear 25, reciprocation of the plate will cause the pump rod and piston to be similarly operated and as the plate is reciprocated, the pin will move within the slot of the plate and prescribe a circle during one operative movement of the piston upwardly and downwardly. The slotted plates provided insure operation of the pump with least possible lost motion and motion is imparted to the weighted fly wheel 31 through the intermeshing gears to assist in the operation of the pump and to make it operate more evenly.
The device is simple in construction, strong and durable in use, efficient in operation and economical to manufacture.
I claim 1. The combination with a pump of a bracket thereon, a gear on said bracket having a wrist pin, a cross head having aslot receiving said wrist pin, a handle lever on said bracket, a valved piston in said pump, and pivotal connections between said lever and said cross head and between said cross head and said valved piston permitting of said cross head moving on said wrist pin toward and away from said gear in conforming to the movements of the lever and valved piston.
2. The combination with a pump, of a bracket thereon, a gear on said bracket having a wrist pin, a balanced wheel operatively connected to and driven by said gear, a cross head having a slot receiving said wrist pin, a handle lever on said bracket a valved piston in said pump, and links pivotally connected to said cross head, one of said links being pivotally connected to said lever and the other of said links being pivotally connected'to said valved piston, said links permitting of saidcross head moving bodily toward, and away from said gear on said 10 Wrist pin in'conforming to the movements of the lever and valved piston. In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature, in presence of two Witnesses.
