CUR-B DRAIN-PIPE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed August 6, 1913. Serial No. 783,439.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARE H. BULLEN, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Portland, county of Multnomah, State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Curb Drain-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to curb drain pipes for use in street improvement work.
The object of my invention is to simplify the mode in which curb drain outlets are usually produced. To this end I provide a short drain pipe, adapted for being built into the curb as the latter is being formed, and which will allow the end of the drain pipe to be readily and conveniently connected thereto.
The further objects of my improved drain pipe are the low cost of manufacture, and the peculiar form of the pipe, which will allow the curb to be built around it without fear of injuring the drain pipe; also the convenience with which my curb drain pipe may be built in place.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a vertical section of a curb, showing in side elevation, my curb drain pipe in place, and the connecting drain pipes; and Fig. 2 is a longitudinal vertical section of my improved curb drain pipe.
Referring in the first place to Fig. 2, my curb drain pipe, at, is made of cement in the form of a conical frustum provided with a cylindrical bore, b, and a shouldered bellshape inlet end a. The latter serves the same purpose as the bell provided in the ordinary pipe construction, receiving the connected dram pipe, (Z, as shown 1n Fig. 1. The cement curb, c, and pavement, f, are
constructed as usual. The curb drain pipe,
a, is of the same length as the thickness of the curb e.
hen the curb is being built, the curb drain pipe, a, is laid in place and the cement of the curb poured around it. The described form of the curb drain pipe allows the cement of the curb to be thoroughly tamped without fear of injuring the curb drain pipe in any way, as has been repeatedly demonstrated in actual practice by me. The described result, I believe, is due to the making of the exterior in the form of a conical frustum throughout its length, without any external offset or flange at the end of the larger diameter.
I claim:
The combination with a cement curb of an outlet piece cast transversely into said curb, said outlet piece formed with a conical exterior and with a cylindrical axial bore, the outlet piece being arranged with its wider end inward of the curb, and such larger end being made with a bell-shaped shoulder for receiving the connecting joint of the drain pipe, said outlet piece having a length not greater than the width of the curb, so that both ends of the outlet piece will be within the opposite faces of the curb.
