T0 all whom t may concern Be it known that 1, BERTRAND MCDERMOT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at vonmore, in the county of Westmoreland and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new anduseful 1mprovements in Combined Rail Ties and Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
rlhis invention relates to a combined rail tie and fastener-,and has for its object to provide means, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, for connecting a rail to a tie without the employment of nuts, bolts and spikes, and at the same time allowing for the necessary contraction and expansion of the rail.
A further object of the invention is to provide, in a manner as hereinafter set forth, a rail tie and fastener for efficiently securing a track rail in position, especially in connection with a curved road bed and without the employment of spikes.
Further objects of the invention are to provide, a combined rail tie and fastener, which is simple in construction and arrangement, strong, durable, efficient invits use, conveniently set up and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
With the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as hereinafter more specifically described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein is shown an embodiment of the invention, but it is to be understood that changes, variations and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views: Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of a combined rail tie and fastener in accordance with this invention, Fig. 2 is a top plan view, Fig. 3 is an end elevation of the tie showing the rail and fastener attached thereto, Fig. t is a cross sectional view of the tie with the rail mounted thereon and further showing sections of the element of the fastener, Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the fasteners, and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the locking wedges for the fastener.
Referring to the drawings in detail, a tie which is formed of any suitable material preferably metal includes side walls 7 and 8,
a bottom 9, a top 10 and a pair of reinforcing webs or braces 11, which are formed integral with the inner face of the side walls, top and bottom and each of said webs 11, centrally of its top, is formed with an opening 12. The top 10 is provided with a pair of rectangular slots 13, which is spaced from each other, arranged centrally of the top and in longitudinal alinement.
Mounted upon the top 10, centrally thereof, is a track rail, the base thereof being indicated at 14, the web at 15 and the head at 16. Extending through each side of the base 14 and abutting against the web 15 are oppositely disposed rail fasteners 17, each of which is formed with a neck 18 which extends through a slot 13 and which ter minates in a head 19, capable of engaging the lower face of the top 10 to prevent vertical movement of its respective fastener. The neck 18 is disposed centrally of its respective fastener and is of materially less width than the head 19. The head 19 is of a length less than the width of its respective fastener' and each of said fasteners is angleshaped in cross section, the horizontal portion projecting on the rail base, while the vertical portion which is indicated by the reference character 20 is positioned against a longitudinal edge of the base.
Extending down in each of the slots 13 and bearing against a rail fastener is a locking wedge 21 having at its top an outwardly projecting lug 22, which engages the top 10 of the tie body. The wedges 21 maintain the rail fasteners in position to co-nnect the rail to the tie and said wedges 21 prevent shifting of the fasteners. Each of the rail fasteners is formed with a rectangular opening 23, having one portion arranged in the neck 18 and the remaining portion in the head 19, and each of the wedges 21 is formed of a rectangular opening 2a, which registers with the o-pening 23 in that rail fastener with which the wedge associates.
Extending through the register openings 23, 24, is a longitudinally extending tie bar 25, which is rectangular in cross section and projects through the openings 12 and the webs 11, as well as projecting between said webs 11, and the projecting ends 26 of said tie bar 25 are provided with slots through which extend cotter pins 27 for connecting the tie bar 25 to said webs 11. The tie bar 25 not only arrests shifting movement of the fasteners, but also prevents vertical movement o-f the Wedges 2l, under such conditions When the Wedges 2l are driven home to maintain the fasteners in position, the tie bar 25 maintains the Wedges in locking engagement with the fasteners.
Vhat I claim is 1. The combination with a hollow tie formed with reinforcing Webs having open ings, of rail fasteners extending thro-ugh the top of and into said tie body, locking Wedges positioned against said fasteners and extending through the top of and into said tie body, and a longitudinally extending tie bar projecting through the openings of said Webs and further extending through said fasteners and Wedges thereby locking the Wedges from vertical movement With respect to said tie. t
2. The combination With a tie, of a pair of rail fasteners adapted to overlap the base of a rail and further extending into said tie, locking Wedges engaging said fasteners and extending intosai'd tie, and a longitudinally extending tie bar arranged Within and connected to said tie and extending through said fasteners, taining them from vert-ical movement.
3. The combination with a pair of rail fasteners adapted to engage a rail, of locking Wedges engaging said fasteners5 and alongconnected to a tie and extending through said fasteners and Wedges for connecting them together.
