TRADESMANS SIGNAL.
Specification of Letters Patent. Yatented June 23, 1914,,
Application filed July 8, 1813. Serial No. 777,916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALEXANDER A. OLD- HAM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Greensboro, in the county. of Guilford and State of North Carolina, have invented new and-= useful Improvements in Tradesmens Signals, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates toindicators, and more particularly to the class of tradesmens indicators.
- The primary object of the invention is the provision of an indicator wherein a pointer and dial canbe set by theuser so that a-tradesina'n can ascertain'ata-:glance the exact quantity of acommodity or-commodities to be delivered to the consumer, the indicator being especially designedfor use in notifying dairymen and. icemen as to the quantity of buttermr sweetmilk-or cream to be delivered and also the number of pounds of ice to-beleft or delivered toa house, thereby obviating the necessity of verbal notice to such tradesmen as sual'.
Another object of the invention is the provision of an indicator of this character which is extremely simplein construction, thoroughly reliable and efiicientin. its. purpose, and inexpensive in manufacture...
With these and other objects in View, the
invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawings :Figure 1 is a plan view of an indicator constructed in accordance with the invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a fragmentary view similar to Fig. 1, with the movable dial partly broken away. Fig. 5 is a rear elevation Similar reference characters indicate .cor-
resoonding parts throughout the severalviews in the drawings.
Referring to the drawings by numerals, the indicator comprises a card or plate 5 preferably constructed from stiif card board, although it may be made from any other suitable material, for instance, sheet metal, the said card or plate being provided on its front face with a circular dial 6 having at intervals near its periphery indicia such as numerals 7, a series of which ranging from O to 50 in multiples of 10, while 50 to 1.00 in multiplesv of 25, while above the said .dial-6 and printed or otherwise impressed uponathe front .face of the card orplate 5 are the words Ice and Milk, the letters of which may be plain or of artistic design to give a neat appearance to the indicator.
Mounted at one side of the dial 8 is a thermometer8 which is of any ordinary wellknownconstruction .1 to register climatic changes for theyconvenience of the user of the indicator. Superimposed over the dial 6. is a movable dial 9 forming a rotatable dial-which isconnected to the card or plate 5, by..means of a pivot 10 passed centrally through the said dial 9 andfastened in. the card; orplate inany suitable manner. The outer face'ofathedisk 9 h'a'sprinted or otherwise .-impressed thereon indicia such as numerals as at 11, a. series of the numerals ranging from 1 tolO, and the remaining digits .being as follows, numerals 12, 16 and the fraction of a unit, namely, '1';- These the :remainingnumerals are ranged from numerals indicate the scale of liquid measthe word Ice, so that the two scales can be readily distinguished from each other and on the reading thereof it-can be accurately determined whether the same is indicative of. the commodities desired.
'Rotatably supported upon the pivot 10 are a series of pointers or hands 12', 13 and 14 respectively, which cooperate with the numerals 11 on-the dial 9, each hand'beiilg colored and its hue distinguishable from the color of the other hands fora purpose prescntliy described. I
The isk 9 is provided.with a peep opening or hole 15 which is adapted to register with the numerals 7 on the 'dial so that On the-front face of the card or plate 5- near the ,marginal edges thereof is printed or otherwise impressed a border 16 which gives neat appearance to the indicator and adds to the ornamental characteristics thereof. Arranged at the rear of the. card are colored similar to the letters forming or plate and swingingly connected to the pivot are aseries of arms 17, 18 and 19 respectively, the free ends of which project beyond one edge of the said card or late 5, the arm 19 being provided with the letter B, the arm 18 with the letter S, and the arm 17 with the letter 0, these letters being colored similarly with respect to the pointers or hands 12, 13 and 14 so that each arm will cooperate with the respective pointer or hand. The arms are movable over a rack bar 20 which is suitably fixed to the rear face of the card or plate 5 and is formed withholding tongues 21 for receiving the respective arms 17, 18 and 19 when the same are set for exposing the letters thereon, the letter B being indicative of buttermilk, the letter S being indicative of sweet milk, and the letter C being indicative of cream so that when these arms are set for displaying the letters thereon and the pointers or l1ands12, 13 and 14 have been adjusted to aline with the numerals 11 on the disk!) a tradesman can readily determine the quantity of butter or sweet milk or cream to be delivered to the consumer. The arms 17, 18 and 19 are adapted to swing in an arc whereby the free ends thereof canbe moved behind the card or plate 5 and be concealed thereby when it is desired not to display the letters thereon.
From the foregoing it is thought that the construction and manner of operation of the device will be clearly understood, and therefore a more extended explanation has been omitted.
What is claimed is g 1. An indicator comprisin a supporting plate havin a circular dia face thereon, a movable disk-like dial superimposed upon the dial face, the said dial face and movable dial bein provided with indicia indicative of avoirdupois weight and liquid measurement, respectively, and a pointer traversable over the dial and cooperative with the indicia indicative of liquid measurements, the said movable dial being provided with a peep opening for registry with the indicia on the dial face.
2. An indicator comprising a supporting plate having a circular dial face thereon, a
rotatable disk-like dial mounted upon the plate the dial face thereon, the said dial face and rotatable dial being provided with indicia indicative of avoirdu ois weight and liquid measurement, respectively, and a plurality of pointers connected to the pivot of the rotatable dial and traversable over the latter, and a plurality of arms swingingly connected to the pivot of the rotatable dial and arranged at the rear of the plate and having indicia to be exposed, the said rotatable dial being provided with a peep opening for registry with the indicia on the dial face of the said plate.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
