To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAN STEYNIs, a subject of theQueen of the Netherlands, residing in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for the Production of Ozone, of which the following is a full, clear, and complete description.
My improvements relate to a newand useful arrangement of electrodes and dielectrics intended and adapted for use in machines for the production of ozone and more particularly, to the arrangement of electrodes and dielectrics in machines of the general type described in my prior Patent, No. 1,066,674. In this prior patent the outer electrodes are 'formed as an integral part of the body of the machine, are fixed therein, the dielectrics and inner electrodes only being removable. With machines of this type, it is necessary to replace the dielectrics and electrodes in case they are damaged in service and on such occasions it is highly desirable that they be so arranged as to be easily and quickly removed and replaced.
Therefore, one'object of my present invention is to so arrange the electrodes and dielectrics that they may be more easily removed and replaced than has been heretofore possible. With this object in view, I so arrange the outer and inner electrodes and the dielectrics that they will constitute and be assembled as a unitary structure whichmav be readily inserted and removed. With such an arrangement when anypart of the unit becomes unserviceable, the entire unit may be removed and a-new one inserted.
Other objects and advantages of my invention will appear from a description of the preferred embodiment shown in the accompanying drawing, in which- Figure 1'is a vertical section of a portion of an ozone generator showing one improved unit in position. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the removable unit'shown in Fig. 1. Fig. is a sectional View taken on line 33 of Fig. 1, the dielectric tube being partly broken away for clearness of illustration.
Referring to the"drawing in detail,-the numeral 1 designates the casin of the ozone machine, which casing is provided with one or more openings 2, each adapted to receive an outer electrode 3. The latter is arranged to slide in. and out of the opening 2 and is provided with a shoulder 4 at the upper end, adapted to rest on the upper wall 0 the casing and support the outer electrode in the position shown. v
The numeral designates a dielectric tube made of glass or any other suitable material, positioned in the outer electrodeand surrounding the inner electrode 6., A spider 7 is fixed in the lower end of the outer electrode and is provided with outwardly extending arms 8 having inclined surfaces 9 adapted torcceive, support and to center the lower end *of the electrode 5. A vertical rod 10 is mounted in the center of the spider and extends upwardly into the recess 11' formed in the insulator '12. The lower endof this insulator is provided with projections 13, ivhich contact with the annular ring 14- pn the spider and serve to center the lower end of the insulator. At its upper end the insulator is tapered and the tapered portion enters a recess'15 in the lower end of the electrode 6 and serves to center and support the lower end of this electrode. At its upper end the electrode 6 is provided with a plurality of projections 16, having inclined surfaces 17 arranged against the wal of the dielectric 5 and to -center and support the upper end of the electrode. A plurality of set screws 18 made of insulating material are mounted on the outer electrode at its upper end and bear against the dielectric and center the same in the proper position in the outer electrode.
From the foregoing description it will be seen that the two electrodes and the dielectric constitute a unitary structure which may be easily removed and inserted. It will also be seen that, should the dielectric break, the
parts thereof, instead of falling into the machine, will be caught bythe spider so as to be easily removed. Not only can the unit be removed more easily than has heretofore been possihle, but the several parts constituting the unit can be quicklyand easily taken apart and assembled. The inclined surfaces 9 and the set screws 18, while centering the electrode, permit the same to be readily withdrawn and-inserted. Likewise the taperedend ofjthe insulator l2 and inclined surfaces 17, while supporting and automatically centering the inner electrode, yet permit its easy removal and insertion.
While I have only illustrated a single unit, it is understood that a complete machine embodying my improvements may and preferably will consist of a large number of units and while I have only illustrated one embodiment of my invention I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departing from the scope of my claims.
What I claim is:
1. In a machine of the kind described a casing, a. tubular opening therein, an outer electrode slidably mounted in said opening,-
a dielectric tube and an inner electrode, both mounted in anil carried by said outer electrode, substantia 1y as described.
2. In a machine of the kind described,-a casing, a tubular opening therein, an outer electrode slidably mounted in said opening,
a spider fixed in the lower end of said electrode, an insulator mounted thereon, a dielectric tube supported by said spider and an inner electrode supported by said insulator, substantially as described.
3.111 a machine of the kind. described, an outer electrode, a dielectric tube disposed therein, a spider fixed in the lower end of said electrode provided w; 1 inclined surfaces adapted to center aipd support the lower end of the dielectric tube, substantially as described.
4. In a machine of the kind described an outer hollow electrode, an insulator having a tapered upper end fixed in the lower end or said electrode and an inner electrode provided with an opening at its lower end adapted to receive the tapered end ofsaid insulator, for the purpose described.
5. In a machine of the kind described an outer electrode, a dielectric tube disposed therein, a spider fixed in the lower end of said electrode provided with inclined surfaces adapted to center and support the lower end of the dielectric tube and a plurality ofset screws mounted on the walls of the outer electrode at its upper end and adapted to bear against and center the upper end of said dielectric, substantially as described.
