Referring now to the safety-lock devices in which t e invention mainly resides,--As here embodied, a lock for the latch c is shown at p, Figs. 1, 8 and 4. It consists of an arm which is pivoted at p npo'n a rearward extension of stand al, with capacity tor vertical swinging movement, the limits of which are fixed bv stops p2, p2, upon stand d. The forward en. of said arm is constructed for engagement with a portion ot' latch c. When the latch is forward in engagement with arm c of the clutch-eontrollingl lever 257, as in Figs. l and 3, and the lock itself is in its lowest. position in engagement` with the latch, as in said figures the lock prevents the latch from disengaging from arm e. Consequently the clutch-controlling lever 257 is held locked in its working position and the cl1a11ge-shaft remains at rest. When the lock is raised out of its working position, the lat/ch is thereby unlocked so that it is rendered capable of being disengaged from arm e of the clutch-controlling lever to allow the clutch-devices to clutch the change-shaft to the constantly revolving worm-gear 75.
The actionof the lock is controlled by a lock-controller g, which in this instance is constituted by a rocking-cam pivoted at q, upon stand d, and engaging by its cam-face with the underside of a pin 713`carried by lock p. The gravity of the lock, aided by the tension of a spring if deemed advisable, keeps the pin p in contact with the said cam-face, se that .the shape ot the latter determines the position of the. lock. The ramfaee has a prominence which is located intermediate two depressions. Then either depression is presented to the-pin p3 the lock is free to assume or retain its working position occupied in Fig 8. As the controller is rocked from one extreme position to the other, the projection in passing the pin p3 raises the lock, thereby disengaging it from the latch. As the projection passes out of engagement with pin p3 the lock is allowed to drop back toward its working position.
The lock-controller q is connected with the shipper-handle 2O by means of a connector if, the upper end of which is connected to the link 19. Consequently release of the clutch-controlling lever 257 by accident or mischance, and resulting clutching of the change-shaft to the cpnstantly rotating worm-gear 75, cannot occur. When the shipper-handle is thrown ofi', the movement of pivot 192 lowers link 19 and connector q2, and, in addition to permitting the shipper-lever and brakelever to act to arrest the Weaving instrumentalities, rocks the lock-controller q from its position in Fig. 3 to that occupied by it in Fig. 4. As the lock-controller is thus rocked, its prominence raises the lock momentarily, the lock being left free to drop again by the depression which is then resented to pin p. During the momentary e evation of the lock the latch is unlocked, and at this time it is capable of being disengaged from the clutchcontrolling lever by the action of the weftdetector devices. If it is not disengaged While the lock is elevated, it is locked again by the immediately following descent of the lock, and it continues locked during the stoppage ot' the ionic until the weaver restarts the latter by throwing on the shipper-handle. Consequently he may work around the loom, and operate thesame by hand, without danger of accidentally starting-up the changeshaft. In brief, therefore, the lock holds the latch locked while the loom-shipper is on and also while it is offf that is to say at all times except during an intermedi-atc portion of the movement ot' the loom-shipper.
The loop or slot g in the lower end of the connector g is vertically elongated so that it permits lost-motion between the said connector and pin h. Consequently, when the tripping rock-shaft is rocked the toe 4G thereof acts to throw oil" the shipper-handle before the lower end-wall of said loop or slot engages with the said pin L. This gives a sui"- ficient lead to the lock-controller q to enable its prominence to litt the lock in time to permit Withdrawal of the latch by movement transmitted through connector f7.
The latch resets itself automatically as soon as controlling lever 257 resume. iis working position, and the lock resets itself automatically as soon as the latch has reset itself. v
I do not claim broadly herein devices for tripping the loom-shipper and also tripping the change-shaft drive into action to operatc the, change-shaft, and a lock operatively controlled by said loom-sliipper preventing establishment of such relations atan improper time; or a change-shaft drive fncluding a clutch and clutch-controlling means, loom-shipper, and devices by which the loom-shipper is tripped, and by which also said clutch is tripped to establish drivt i ing relations between said drive and the change-shaft, having combined therewith e lock for said clutch-controlling means, itsel operatively controlled by said loom-shipper, preventing establishment of such relations at an improper time, inasmuch as I have made broad claim thereto in my ifo-pending application for patent for improvements in looms filed Aug. 28, 1912, crinl No. 717,444.
