To all whom, it may concern Be it known that we, SAMUEL B. VAN RANs'r, of Syracuse, in the county of Onondaga and State of New York, and MoR'roN llavnns, Jr., of Albany, in'the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Electrical Appliance, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has for its object the production of a highly simple and etlicient electrical appliance particularly suitable foil use in conduit work; and it consists in the novel combinations and structures hereinafter set forth and. claimed.
In describing the invention, reference is bad to the accoi'npanying drawing in which like charactm's designate corresponding parts in all. the views.
Figures 1 and 2 are, respectively, elevational and longitudinal sectional views of one construc ion of said invention. Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly in section, of the detached hollow body of this electrical appliance. Fig. 4 is a sectional view, on line A-A, Fig. 2. Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 2 of another construction of the invention.
This electrical appliance comprises generally a hollow body 1, and a device 2 for the branching of electric circuits. As here illustrated the body 1 is elongated, and its internal chamber is of a width greater than the diameter of the conduit to be connected to said body for facilitating the, necessary manipulation and conne tion of the circuit wires and minimizing the liability of shortcircuiting within the electrical appliance. Said body 1 is also formed with a flattened side?) serving as a base, and with an opening 4 in the side 5 opposed to the base such opening being of less size. than the base. A raised part or post (3 projects from the inner face of the base 3, and is of a height less than that of the opposing sides of the body 1, and greater than the diameter of the circuit wires T passed within the internal chamber of the body 1. Said raised part (3 may consist of a rib, as seen in Figs. landfhorof a cylindrical projection,asillustrated in Fig. 5, and is preferably spaced apart from the inner surfa es of opposing sides of the body 1, thus providing spaces between such raised part and opposing sides of the internal chamber of the body for the reception of circuit wires.
Opposing sides of the body 1 arranged at an angle to the base 3 and the side 5 are formed with parts 8 diverging from the side 5, and the opposite parts of said opposing sides are provided with outwardly-projecting internally-threaded nipples 9, a portion 1Q of each nipple being substantially alined with the flattened base 3, and the longitudinal openings or passages through the nipples 9 communicating with the spaces at opposite sides of the raised parts 6, and being arranged with their axes between, and unequally separated from, the upper and lower edges of t e sides of the body provided with the nipples 9. A conduit for. electric wires is suitably connected to the body 1, said conduit preferably including tubular sections 11 arranged end to end and spaced apart, and screwim into the nipples 9 against shoulders 12 within the inner ends of the lengthwise passages of said nipples. It is thus apparent that opposing sides of thebody 1 are provided with portions of reduced size and formed with openings respectively connected to the conduit and permitting the passage of circuit wires continuously through the nipples 9 and the spaces at opposite sides of the raised part (3.
Preferably, the body 1 is provided with wire-engaging surfaces 13, Fig. 2, diverging from the inner portions of the lengthwise openings or passages of the nipples 9, at an angle to the axes of said nipplts, and with additional internal wire-engaging surfaces 14, Fig. 3, diverging from parts of the inner portions of said openings interposed between the surfaces 123. As best seen in Fig. 3, two of the surfaces 13 diverge from the opening 4 toward the inner portions of the openings or mssages of the nipples 9. Said diverging surfaces 13, 14 being arranged at an angle to the axes of the openings or passages of the. nipples t) facilitate bending of the circuit wires 7 within the hollow body 1 to connect said wiresto the device 2 for the branching of electric circuits and also reduce to a minimum liability of the abrasion or injury of the outer insulating coatings of the wires 7.
The device 2 for the branching of electric circuits serves as a closure for the Opening 1 and thereby forms a part of the inelosing wall of the electric appliance and comprises terminals and a part of insulation which ma be formed in two sections. In Figs. 1 an 2 such device is shown as adapted to receive an electric lamp, the outer portion or end of said device projecting above the side 5 and being provided with a socket extending inwardly from one end and containing the usual screw-shell 15 and central terminal 16 for making contact with the terminals of the lamp. The middle portion of the device 2 substantially fits the opening .4, and the inner portion or end of said device is formed of less size than the opening 4, is movable through said opening into and out, of the internal chamber of the hollow body 1, and is spaced apart from o posing inner surfaces of the body 1 for orming spaces at opposite sides of said portion or end, opening into the spaces at opposite sides of the raised part or post 6, and thus communicating with the longitudinal openings or passages through the nipples 9, the inner end face 17'of said portion or end of the device 2 being mounted upon the raised part 6 and parts of said end face being spaced apart from the inner face of the base 3. Suitable means, as screws 18, movable through the outer surface of the middle portion of the device 2 and extending into the hollow body 1, serves to removably secure said device to the interior of the body 1 and preferably to the raised part or post 6. The portion or end of the device 2 within the hollow body 1 is provided with terminals 19, 20 which extend into the spaces at opposite sides of said portion or end and are electrically connected to bared portions of the circuit wires 7, Fig. 4, and are suitably connected to the terminals 15, 16.
To those skilled in the art it will be understood that the device 2, instead of being in the form of a receptacle adapted to receive electric lamps, may be a rosette intended merely for the branching of electric wires. It will also be understood, as illustrated in Fig. 5, that said device for the branching of electric circuits mayjbe'provided with a shoulder 21. for engaging a rubber gasket 22 mounted on the edge surrounding the openin 4, and that said device may be composed 0 two parts 2 and 2 arranged one above the other and suitably connected together. When the device 2 is of said twopart const'rrretiom-the terminals to which the wires 7 are connected, are elevated sutficiently to cause said wires to engage the surfaces 13, as shown in Fig. 5. In this con- \tI'IIClZlOII the section, or part 2", is attached )y a central screw to the wall 3, or stud 6, projecting from the same, and the section or part 2 is held in place and connected to the section 2 by screws 2.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising a hollow body having one of its sides provided with an opening for connection to a conduit, said body being formed with an o ening in another side arranged at'ar. ang e to the firstmentioned side, and the internal chamber of said body being formed of a width eater than the diameter of the conduit to e connected to the first-mentioned opening, and a device for the branching of electric circuits, said device having a portion thereof substantially fitting the last-mentioned opening, and having another portion thereof movable through said last-mentioned opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body, opposing surfaces of said internal chamber and the last-mentioned portion of said device being spaced apart for forming wire receiving spaces 'at opposite sides of said last-mentioned portion communicating with the first-mentioned opening, and said device being provided with terminals for electrical connection to the circuit wires, the terminals being arranged in said spaces, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hollow metallic body provided with an opening for the reception of a conduit, the opening being located in one wall thereof, a second opening of relatively large size provided in a side of the box extending at an angle to the wall formed with the first-mentioned opening, a cover for the larger opening, the cover being formed of insulating material, and electrically conducting circuit branching means held by the cover in operative relation with the wires or conductors passing into the chamber of the body, and fastening means for holding the cover and said branching means in position, the fastening means for the cover and branching means passing in a 'direction through the cover and the branching means and being accessible from the sides of the box formed with the larger opening, substantially as and for-the purpose described.

In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hollow, integrallyformed body provided with an opening for the reception of a conduit, and like-wise provided with a second opening of relatively larger size, a seat projecting into the chamber formed within the body at a point below the edges of the walls which define the larger opening, and between side walls of the body, forming wire passages, a circuit-branchingdevice adapted to close the. second-mentioned opening, a portion of said circuit-branching device resting upon the afoieme'ntioned seat, and means for securing the circuit-branching device in position, substantially as and for the purpose larger size, a support-v projeeting! nwa passages between opposite sides the combination ot a hollow, integrallyformed body provided with anopening for connection with a conduit and likewise provided with: a second opening of relatiygy 3 into the chamber in the body at' a point below the edgesof the wallswhich. define the larger opening, the projection forming wire of the'body and the projection, a circuit-branching de vice provided with a portion adapted to rest upon said inwardly-projecting portion, the main body of. the circuit-branching device being formed of insulating material and being substantially coextensive with the larger opening, whereby it forms a closure for said opening, and means for securing said circuit-branchingdevice in position upon the main body, substantially as and for thepurpose specified.

An electric appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising an integral hollow metallic body having a side thereof provided with an opening for connection to a conduit, said body being formed with an opening of relatively larger size in a second side arranged at anangleto the ,first-men tioned side, and the internal chamber ofsaid body being formed of a width greater than the diameter of the conduit. to be connected to the first-mentioned opening, and a device for the branching of electric circuits, the same comprising a main part of insulating material serving as a closure for the second-mentioned opening and thereby forming part of the inclosing wall of the electrical appliance, said main part being movable from the contiguous portion of the int-losing wall of said' body independently of said contiguous portion. and terminals for electrical connection to the circuit wires, the terminals being carried by said main part, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising a hollow metallic body having a side thereof provided with an opening for connection to a conduit. said body being formed with in opening in a second side arranged at an angle to the first-mentioned side, and a device for the branching of electric circuitsgthe same comprising a main part of insulating material serving as a closure for the secondmentioned openin and thereby forming part of the inclosing wall of the electrical appliance, said main part having a portion thercof formed of less size than the secondinentioned opening, and movable through such opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body, and having its inner end face supported on the side opposed to the second-nientioncd opening. opposing surfaces of said portion and the side supporting the same being spaced apart for forming wire-receiving spaces communicating with the first-mentioned opening, and said device being provided with terminals for electrical connection to the circuit wires, substantially as and fonthe purpose specifled.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the-same comprising a hollow body having a side thereof provided with an opening for connection to the conduit, said bodybeing formed with an opening in a second side arranged at an angle to the firstmentioned side, and with a raised part on theinner face of the side opposed to the second side, the raised part being spaced apart from the inner surfaces of opposing sides of the body for forming Wll'(!-l(ltlV ing spaces'at opposite sides of said raised part communicating with the first-mentioned opening, and a device for the branching of electric circuits, such device serving as a closure for the second mentioned opcning and thereby forming part of the inclos ing wall of the electrical appliance, and said device havin a portion thereof formed of less size than t e second-mcntioncd opcn ing and movable through such opening into and out of the internal chamlwr of the hollow body and having its inner end face mounted on the raised part, and said device being provided with terminals for electnical connection to the circuit wires, substantially as and for the purpose described.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the sam'e comprising a hollow body having a side thereof provided with an opening for connection to a conduit, said body being formed with an opening in a second side arranged at an angle to the firstmentioned. side, a device for the branching of electric circuits, such device including a part of insulation serving as a closure for the second-mentioned opening and thereby forming part of the inclosing wall of the electrical appliance, and said device having a portion thereof movable through the second-mentioned opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body, such portion of said device being provided with terminals for electrical connection to the circuit wires, and securing means extending through said device into the internal chamber of the hollow body for retaining said device in position, such securing means be ing exposed on the exterior of said device, substantially as and for the purpose described.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising an elongated hollow body formed with a flattened base and having its side opposed to the base formed with an opening of less size than said base, said body having a side arranged at substantially right angles to the base and having a part of its opposing side arranged at an angle to the first-mentioned side, and the other part of said opposing side provided with a projecting internally-threaded nipple for connection to a conduit, a portion of the nipple being substantially alined with the flattened base, and said body being also formed with a raised part on the inner face of the base, the raised part being of a height less than that of opposing sides of the body, and being spaced apart from the inner surfaces of said opposing sides for forming wire-receiving spaces at opposite sides of such raised part communicating with the opening or passage through the nipple, and the internal chamber of said body being formed of a width greater than the diameter of the conduit to be connected to the nipple, and a device for the branching of electric circuits, a portion of said device being formed of less size than the opening in the side opposed to the base, and being movable through such opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body and having its inner end face mounted onthe raised part, and said device being provided with terminals for electrical connection to the (-ircuit wires, substantially as and for the nirpose described.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising, a hollow metallic body having a side thereof provided with an opening for connection to a conduit, said body being formed with an opening in a second side arranged at an angle to the first-mentioned side, a device for the branching of electric circuits, said device having a portion thereof substantially fitting the second-mentioned opening, and having another portion thereof movable through such opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body, opposing sur faces of said internal chamber and the lastmentioned portion of said device being spaced apart for forming wire-receiving spaces at opposite sides of said last-mentioned portion communicating with the first mentioned opening, and said device being provided with terminals for electrical con nection to the circuit wires, the terminals being arranged in said spaces, and screws movable through the outer surface of the por tion of said device substantially fitting the second-mentioned opening, the screws extepding into the hollow body and securing said device to such body, substantially as and for the purpose specified.

An electrical appliance for electric conduits, the same comprising'an elongated hollowbody formed witln a flattened base and having its side opposed to the base formed with an opening of less size than said base, said body having a side arranged at substantially right angles to the base and having a part of its-opposing side arranged at an angle to the fiist-mentioned side, and
the opposite part of said opposing side provided with a projecting internally-threaded nipple for connection to a conduit, a portion of the nipple being substantially alined with the flattened base, and said body being also formed with a raised part on the inner face of the base, the raised part being of a height less than that of opposing sides of the body, and being spaced apart from the inner surfaces of said opposing sides for forming wire-receiving spaces at opposite sides'of such raised part communicating with the opening or passage through the nipple, a device for the branching of electric circuits, said device having a portion thereof substantially fitting the second-mentioned opening, and having another portion thereof movable through such opening into and out of the internal chamber of the hollow body and having its inner end face mounted on said raised part, opposing surfaces of said internal chamber and the last-mentioned portion of said device being spaced apart for forming wirereceiving spaces at opposite sides of said last-mentioned portion communicating with the opening or passage of the nipple, and said device being provided with terminals for electrical connection to the circuit wires, the terminals being arranged in said spaces, and screws movable through the outer surface of the portion of said device substantially fitting the second-mentioned opening, the screws extending into the hollow body and engaging the raised part for securing said device tosuch body. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hoI ow integrally formed body portion, provided with an opening for connection with a conduit and with a second opening of a relatively larger size. a seat rising from the wall opposite the second opening and being of less width than the chamber 'within the body, in order to provide wire passages on opposite sides of such seat, a circuit branching device, the main body of which is formed of insulating material. saiddcvice being provided with an inwardly projecting portion which rests upon the seat. the inwardly projecting por- 7 tion having wire terminals on opposite sides thereof projecting into the spaces on opposite sides of the scat, and said device being also provided with a. section which overlies the upper edges of the walls around the second opening, and means for securing the circuit branching device in place. substantially as and for the purpose specified.

In a device of the haracter specified, the combination of a hollow body provided with an opening for connection with a con duit and with a second opening of relatively larger size, and a circuit branching device including a member mounted within the body and fixed to the wall thereof opposing said opening and a member closing the openin and detachably secured to the member wit in the body, the member closing the opening also extendin into the body, substantially as and for the purpose described. 14. In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hollow, integrallyformed body portion provided with an openbranching device, the main body of which is formed of insulating material, said device being provided with an inwardly projecting member which rests upon the seat, and being likewise provided with a section which overlies the upper edges of the walls which define the larger opening, and means for securing said circuit branching device in place, said means coacting with the seat. substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

In a device of the character specified, the combination of a hollow body portion provided with an opening for connection with a conduit and with a second opening of a relatively larger size, a seat within the body at a point below the edges of the walls which define the larger opening, a circuit branching device, the main portion of: which is formed of insulating material, said device including two separable members, one being mounted on the seat, and the other being of ()mmdaga. in the State of New ;York,

In a device of the character specified and in combination, a hollow metallic body provided with an opening for connection to a conduit, and a second opening of relativel larger size, a circuit branching device inclu ing terminals and a member of insulation comprising two separable sections, one located in the chamber of the body and resting against the bottom Wall thereof, the major portion of the opposing faces of said section and wall being spaced apart, a screw passing through the section and engaging the wall for holding the section in position, and the other section closing said opening and. having a part depending within the same, and another part overlyingthe marginal wall thereof, and screws extending through the second section and coiiperating with the first section for holding the second section in place, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
