GEORGE PETER KLINE, OF WILKES-BRRE, PENNSYLVANIA.
MOLD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 23, 1914.
Application filed February 21, 1914. Serial No. 820,200.
To'aZZ whom it may concern.'
Be it known that I, GEORGE P. KLINE, a'
citizen of the United States, residing at IVilkes-Barre, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Molds; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to molds provided with cleaning gates and used in metal founding; and it consists in the novel construction and combination of the parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical section through a mold provided with a cleaning gate and strainers according to this invention. Fig, 2 is a side view, and Fig. 3 is a plan view, of the upper disk. Fig. 4 is a side View, and Fig. 5 is a plan view of the lower disk.
The mold or metal space 2 is formed in the sand 3 contained in the lower boX 4, and a core 5 is shown in the mold. The top boX 6 has a riser 7, and a pouring gate 8 formed in the sand 9 contained in it, all of these parts being of any approved construction. A cleaning gate 10 is formed in the sand of thetop box, and a passage 12 is formed under the cleaning gate, in the sand of the lower box, which connects'the cleaning gate with the mold or metal space 2. A lateral passage 14 is formed in the sand of the top box which connects the pouring gate with the cleaning gate.
An upper strainer disk 15 and a lower strainer disk 18 are arranged in the passage 12 under the cleaning gate, and the upper disk rests on the lower disk and has a concave recess 16 in its underside` and notches 17 at its edges. The lower disk 18 has perforations 19.
The metal which is run into the pouring gate flows through the passage 14 onto the top disk. The impurities are separated from the metal by the action of the two disks, vand the impurities rise upwardly in the cleaning gate, while the clean metal passes through the notches and perforations of the two disks into the mold.
The notches of the upper disk are out of line with the perforations of the lower disk, so that when the metal flows through the perforations it does not draw down .impurities with it, as it would do if the upper disk were not provided.
What I claim is:
1. In a mold, the combination, with mold ing material having a passage leading into the metal space, and having a cleaning gate and a pouring gate operatively connected together and with the said passage; of two strainer disks arranged one above the other in the said passage and provided with openings for the metal arranged out of line with each other.
2. In a mold, the combination` with molding material having a passage leading into the metal space, and having a cleaning gate and a pouring gate operatively connected together and with the said passage; of an upper strainer disk and a lower strainer disk arranged in the said passage. the said upper disk having notches at its edges and a concave recess in its underside, and the said lower disk having perforations arranged o-ut of line with the notches of the upper disk.
3. In a mold, the combination. with a top bOX, and molding material contained therein and provided with a pouring gate, a cleaning gate` and a passage connecting the said gates; of a lower box. and molding material contained therein and provided with a passage which connects the said gates with the metal space of the mold; and two strainer disks arranged one above the other in the last said passage and vertically under the said cleaning gate.
In testimony whereof I have atliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. GEORGE PETER KLINE.
Witnesses:
E. J. OBRIEN, C. F. SGHAEFFER.
