Description

tntd me f jaar ccc/;
,WlLLrnM H. siBLE, 'or HARRISBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
Letters Patent No. 110,079, dated December 13, 1870.
iMPRo'vl-:MENTIN MoRrlslNe-MACHINES'.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the saine.
To all 'whomit may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SIBLE, of Harrisburg, in the county of- Dauphin and State of Penn- Sylvania, have invented a new and valuable lmprove ment in Combined 'Denon and l\.[ortising-Machine; and I do hereby declare that the following is a'full, clear, and exact description of the construction and A'operation of lthe' same, reference being had to the annexcd drawing making a part of this specification, and
to the letters and gures of reference marked thereon..
Figure 1 of the drawing is a representation of my improved machine in transverse vertical section; and
Figure 2 is a front elevation of the same.
My present invention is intended as an improvement` upon the tenon an'd mortising-machine for which Let` tels Patent, N o. 94,140, were granted to me in August, 1869 and It consists in that it is selt`-feeding, the chisel and" knife moving instead. ofthe timber.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertains to make and use the same, I will'now proceed to describe its construction and operation, referring to the annexed drawing.
A A represent the upright standards, supported Aupon feet or bed-pieces, B B, and connected by a movesthrough a slot in the cross-bar O, andto the l upper end of which is secured an oblong' or rectangular box, H.
This box moves guides el d, attached to theinner. .sides of the standards A- A.'
The treadle E, with the bar G and box H, is thrown upward by a spring, I.
ylhe box H is closed at its rear end, but open at the front end, and in the same is placed a block, J, which carries the chisel or knife e.
A screw, K, with a hand-wheel, L, at its outer end, is passed through the closed rear end of' the box H into the block J ,and by this means the chisel or knife may -be fed by hand, itl so desired.
But for the purpose of making itself-feeding I have provided the outer circumference of the wheel L with teeth, vi t', as shown in tig. 2, and from a bar, h, atthe upper end of one of the standards, is suspended a pawl, m, which gcarswith said teeth in the following manner:
The treadle being pressed downward, the chisel or knife is brought down i'nto the wood; then, when the spring throws itup again, the pa'wl m will strike one of the teeth ft, turning the wheel L a Vshort distrn'cc,
which feeds the knife inward.
Having thus fully described my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
l. As an improvement upon the machine described in my patent,'No. 94,140, the combination therewith of the ratchet-wheel L and pawl m, in the manner herein described.
2. The combination of the trcadle E, spring I, bar
G, box H, block J, screw K, toothed wheel L, and
pawl n, all` vconstructed and arranged to operate substantially as and for the purposes herein set forth.
'In testimony that I claim the above, I have herc- 'unto subscribed my name in the presence of two wit-l nesses.
TILLIAM H. SIBLE.
