Description

f UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEioE..
HARRY A. GOULDOF ST. LOUIS, AlVILSSOUlEtI.
TOY PISTOL.
ninemsn.
To all whom t may concern AtBe it known that I, HARRY 'son Aof the United States, Louis, State of Missouri, certain new Toy Pistols, specification.
4This invention relates to toys and more particularly to toy pistols embodying a spring actuated throwingor projecting niembfe'r, the operation of Which is controlledby a trigger.l v- The prin'iary object of this invention is the provision of a toy pistol as specified whichfis, exceedingly simple in construction, durable, and efficient in its operation; being designed for the purpose of throwing a ball or like article into the air. y
Another object of this invention' is the provision of abasket like structure which is mountedlupon the end of the barrel ofthe A. GoULo, citiresiding at St. vhave invented and useful Improvements in of which the following is a pistol so as to receive the ball or like artiseveral views and in 'more vfully described,
cle when the same descends after having been thrown in the air.
With the foregoing and other ob'ects in vievv this invention consists in suc novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter illustrated inthe accompanying drawings. and claimed.
ln describing the invention in detail reference will be had to "the accompanying drawingsvvherein like characters designate like or corresponding parts throughout the which Figure 1 isa side elevation of the improved toy. pistol. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the same; and Fig. 3 is a detail elevation of the basket like structureivhich is mountl ings, l designates the .stock or handle of the ed upon the end of the barrel of th pistol showing the ball placed therein, in dotted lines. L
Referring more particularly to the drawtoy pistol which has a barrel 2 formed integrally therewith and extending outwardly from the handle 1 as is common in the construction of devices of `this nature. The handle or stock ll has a shoulder '3 formed thereupon at the junction of the`barrel 2 and the handle, which shoulder is provided With an opening ""ending therethrough. s a trigger 5 mounted connected to the hany e pistol by means of a pin 6 which extends laterally through the Specification of `Letters Patent.
Application filed August 13, 1913. Serial No. 784,579.
vthrown into the l above the edge of Patented J une 23, Mild,
stock 1. The trigger 5 has its lower end T providedwth a concave and a convex surface so as to be easily gripped by one oi 'the lingers of a hand for the operating of the saine and it also has a rubber band El thereabout and mounted in the under surface o't the stock 1 of the pistol. The trigger 5 preferably has a cut out portion formed inlone edge thereof for the reception of therubber band so as to preventthe saine from slipping or springing-olf the trigger. The rubber band 8 tends to hold the trigger inthe position shownin Fig. 1 of the drawings at all times and oause'sit to assume this position immediately afterfit has been operated.
The upper end 10 of the vtriggeri which serves practicallyfthefpurpose-of the ham merpan ordina-'ry pistol is provided with a notch 11 formed therein. The shoulder 12` which eisiforrned -by the cutting of the notch 11 normally engages the shoulder 14 which is formed `Where the two arms 15 and 16 of the wire 17 are benttoward and twisted one about the other, The Wire 17 has a circular shaped loop 18 formed upon its outer end, W ich is disposed directly above thehandle or stock 1 of the pistol and which is formed at the termination of the twisted portion 19 of the Wire 17. The loop l18 is-providedfor the reception of a ball or similar article 20 which is to be air by the operation of the pistol.
The vvire 17 extends longitudinally along the barrel of the pistol being spaced slightly the same and the two arms and 16 are coiled about a pin 21 which is inserted through the barrel 2 near the outer end of the same. v The ends 22 and 23 of the Wire which are left after the arms 15 and 16 are coiled about the pin 21 extend rear* Wardlly along the sides of the pistol barrel and are securely attached to the'same by means of pins 24 and, 25.
By ceiling the Wire 17 about the pin 21 a spring action is imparted to the same which will, when the trigger 5 is moved upon its pivotal pin 6 so that the shoulder 12 will move out of engagement with the shoulder 14', cause the Wire to spring upwardly in the direction indicated by the arrow l., and throw the ball other article high into the air. The rubber band 8 v'ill then draw the trigger 5 to its normal iiosition and when the Wire is forced downwardly, cause the about pin 9 which is I 'pistol will be readily apparent shoulder 12 to engage the shoulder 14 and hold the pistol discharging the I basket 8O wh Whose ends are one With the other is mounted upon the outer l end of the barrel 2 of the pistol. The ends of the Wires Which are bent or curved inwardly are inserted into the end of the barrel and thus the basket 30 is neeted to the same. The basket 30 is p rovided for the purpose of catching the ball or l article 20 as the same descends after having,` i been thrown into the air-by the spring action of the wire 17. Should' it be desired, any type of spring may be employed in place of the rubber band S and the pistol barrel may be formed either squareA round or hexagonal, these features being optional to the person manufacturing the device.
Frein the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying the advantages of the construction and of the method of opera tion of the improved toy to t-liose skilled inthe artto which this invention appertain and, while in foregoing description, the principle of the operation of this invensecurely contionhas been described together with various features oi derstood that certain minor features oi. construction, combination and arrangement of pai-ts may be altered to suit practical condi tions provided such alterations are comprehended within the scope of what is claimed.
Vhat is claimed is:
A tov pistol comprising, a i a barrel, a trigger pivotallv mounted within the stock, projecting means operatively niounted upon the barrel, said projecting moans consisting ot a single piece of spring wire bent upon itseli and havinf,r two parallel arms thereo twisted one upon the other to form a loop for thel reception of a projectile,
stock.
said trigger engaging' the projecting ineinber at its twisted portion, the arms of the projecting means embracing' the barrel and each being coiled upon a pin, the free ends thereof being` rigidly secured to the barrel.
In testimony whereof I aliix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
