My invention relates to'improvements in calculating machines, and more particularly in calculating machines in which the setting mechanism consists of disks provided with .radially shiftable teeth representing the values to be transmitted to the registering mechanism, and cam disks coperating with the disks and adapted to shift the desired number of teeth .into operative positions. In machines ofthis class the registering mechanism is'mounted on a laterally shiftable carriage, which also carries a revolutions counting mechanism, the revolutions counting mechanism being ordinarily mounted at the left hand side of the register-ing mechanism. A machine of this class is shown for example in the patent of the United States No. 1,040,059, vdated October 1, 1912, granted vto Franz Trinks.
In calculating machines which are .designed for performing calculations of every kind the revolutions counting mechanism must be constructed in such a way, that it can be used in a similar way as the registering mechanism, and more particularly it must be possible to operate the numeral wheels of any order. For this reason between adjacent numeral wheels of the revolutions counting mechanism sets of gear wheels have been provided for the carrying opei'a."'on which can be rocked in radial direction. rThese sets of gear wheels can be rocked independently of each jother, and they are rocked by the operating mechanism for the carrying mechanism, which travels on the carriage from one numeral wheel to the other and is operated Yin such a way, that during the revolution of the crank and prior to the operation of a numeral wheel of the revolutions counting mechanism the carrying mechanism which is located at the right. of the said. numeral wheel is thrown out of operation. Mechanism of this kind is shown for example in the patent of the United States No. 1,007,618, dated October 31, 1911, granted to Franz Trinks. This mechanism requires much space and it is very heavy, and furthermore the heads of the teeth of the sets ofgear wheels are liable to engaget-heheads of the spur gears connected with the numeral wheels when 'the sets of gear wheels are rocked backward.
The object of the improvements is to provide a mechanism of this kind, in whichithe numeral wheel which is located in each case at the right of the driving mechanism is thrown out of operation by axially displacing the coperating intermediate gear Wheel. By 'tlnis constructing the mechanism the carrying mechanism is thrown out of opera-A tion in, a reliable way, because the mechanism provided therefore is mounted on the same axis as the intermediate gear wheels, and the intermediate gear wheels are thrown into operation by the moving tooth controlling the same, before advancing the same.
For the purpose of explaining the invention an example embodying` the same has been shown in the accompanying drawings, in which the same letters of reference have heen used in all the views to indicate corresponding parts.
Insaid drawings-Figure 1, is a front view of the calculating machine partly in section and with the cover of the casing partly reli'ioved and showing the carriage in the normal position. The advancing movement is transmitted to theV left hand part of the revolutions counting mechanism, because the intermediate gear wheels are in such positions, that they are in the paths of the single teeth t as Well as inthe plane of the gear Wheels b of the next following numeral Wheel.
The length of the arc shaped member 0 and the relative distance of the stationary stops 7c are such that when rocking the lever z' the notches are not perfectly discri- .gaged from the noses 7ca so that after the tooth o haswbeen disengaged fromwthe cooperating intermediate gear Wheel. /t the lever is returned bythe spring f into initial position in which it istat the middle between the stops le.

I claim herein as my invention:

5.- In a calculating machine, the combination with the rotary setting mechanism, and a registering mechanism coperating therewith, said setting mechanism and registering mechanism being shiftable relatively to each other, of revolutions counting mechanism comprising numeral wheels and axially shitable intermediate gear lWheels connected with the registering mechanism and an operating member connected- With the setting mechanism and non-shiftable relatively thereto, operating gearings provided respectively on opposite sides of said numeral Wheels of the revolutions counting mechanism, the gearings located at the side of the higher orderl being operative during a partof their revolution only and gearings of adjacent numeral wheels being located in positions for engagement with' the same intermediate gear Wheel, sets ofjrocking and stationary cam members coperatingi one with each of the intermediate gear Wheels and adapted to shift the intermediate gear wheel cooperating with said operating member out ofengagement with the-coperating gearing which is operativeduring a part of, its revolution, an arc shaped member con-- nected with the operating member adapted to rock the 'cooperating rocking cani member prior lto the engagement of the operating; member with the intermediate gear wheel, and automatic means to return the rocking member into normal position.
