Description
we; @die Letters Patent No. 110,038, dated Decemberl, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN CORES FR `CASTING.
The Schedule referred to In theseLetters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it knownl that I, J oHN HERALD, of Unadillain the county of v Otsego and State of New York, have invented-a new and improved Sand-Holder for Gast#A ing Hook-shaped Straps; and 'l .do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrlption-thereof', which will enable others skilled in the art to make anduse the same, reference being had to theaccompanying drawing forming part of thisspecification.
' Figure lrepresents a face or topyiew of a hook-g shaped strap, containing my sand-holder under the Figure 2 isan edge Vview of the same.
Figure 3 is a plan riew,`on an enlarged scale, of fthe sand-holder;v
AFigure 4 is a transverse section ofthe rs:m1e, takeu fon the plane of the line x x, iig. 3.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invent-ion is to provide a rigid or stable mold which can be inserted between the spaces intended for the casting of the main body or shank of 'a strap-o1' plate, and the turned-over car or hook of the same.
The invention consists in the usc, for the stated purpose, of a metallic =case or sand-holder, in which the sand for the said mold is contained.
Fig. l represents a strap or plate of the nature referred to, holding between its shank or body, @,-and turned-'over hook or ar,b, the sand-holder B, which was instrumental in the formation of said hook during the'proccss of casting. This sandfholder B is a metalliccase or rim, open or closed at the bottoni, and filled with sand when applied. Heretofore the'portion of t-heinold used for the stated purpose was made of sand alone, and therefore not readily removable from the iinished plates w-thout being destroyed, unless previously baked' and hardened by specialprocess.v This process of baking alnlhardening involved considerable expensive labor, without giving perfectly 'satisfactory results.v
The lnetalliccase oljholder B will retain th'c requi- 'sitc quantity of sand fora" suitable length of time,
and can be handled, applied, and removed with perfect liberty and ease. It need not only be iilled with saiid, but may, if desired, bc also in part or entirely surroiinded with sand, as indicated by ,dotted lilies in fig. 4, the' nietal serving as a brace or rib for holding the'outers'and properly in place.
It is evident'that the invention is applicable to the casting of all hook-shaped plates or. devices, between hook and shank.
Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters' Patent- 1 The metallic sand-holder B, arranged for application between the `hook and shank of a hook-shaped plateor article to be cast, substantially as herein` shownand described.
' JOHN HERALD.
