To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, AUGUST J. KREUZ- .iciMig a cit'izen of the United States, residing at Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Springs or Spring-Mattresses, of which tho following is a specification.
rl`his invention relates to improvements in springs or spring mattresses, the object of the invention being to provide an improved article of this class having an improved effective and efficient means which willnot only prevent the slippage and spreading of a stu'ed mattress on its spring and the consequent hanging and sagging over of the side edges thereof and which will maintain it in its original box-like form on the spring, but which will also provide a means for reinforcing and supporting the side edges of the spring or spring mattress in a very effective and durable manner. The object of the invention being to provide means which will accomplish all of the foregoing objects in a very simple and comparatively inexpensive manner by one and the same structure.
I am aware that side-guards of variousl forms have been patented and also aware that several patents have been obtained for reinforcing` the side edges of the mattress, but with those devices for the latter purpose with which I am familiar, they are notv efficient for also preventing the spreading and flattening of a stuifed, mattress for the simple reason that they are so connected with the side edges of the spring at the center thereof that there is nothing to pre-A vent at these points and for a considerable distance at each side thereof the spreading of the stued mattress when it becomes flattened in use, and consequently there isl nothing` to prevent at these points the side edges of the stuffed mattress sagging or hanging over the side edges of the springv and in consequence these devices will not maintain the stuffed mattress in its originall box-like form, whereas by the present improvement not only is the stued mattress maintained in its proper place and in its proper shape, but the side edges of the spring are materially reinforced and supported at the points where they are ordinarily the weakest.

is such that at no point is there a sufficient opening to permit the stuied mattress to proJect beyond the side edge of the spring, while at the same time the side edge of the spring is materially reinforced and supported at ifs weakest point and this by means of tangential or diagonal supports connected with the spring in such manner that the spring is supported at its side edges midway of its length, and which supports by reason of their tangential 'format-ion cooperate with horizontal members inv such way as to fill the spaces between such horizontal members and so prevent the protrusion of the stuffed mattress and therefore its flattening and spreading- Moreover, the organization is suchv that the reinforcing tangentially located members permit the use in an effective and efficient manner of wireformed coiled or spirally wound cables which would otherwise not be practicable, that is to say, when a cable formed of a series of interwoven wires, usually forming coils or spirals, is used, the cable has a certain elastic limit; in other words, the cable when made 'in this way, it usually being hollow, will stretch only a certain distance before its elastic limit is exceeded when it will not return to its normal condition and in consequence it becomes wobbly and is of no efficiency as a side-guard, and this is one reason why additional means is necessary in order to keep it taut. By the provision of this improved reinforcing` means connected in the manner herein described with the bottom and with the horizontal spirally wound cables, these reinforcing members co-act with the cable and with the bottom in such manner that they prevent the elastic limit of the horizontal cable from being exceeded in that any stretching of the cable laterally or pullingthereon lengthwise is offset by the fact that this pull or stretching of the cable is also imparted to the diagonal reinforcing means and to the bottom, and this thus holds the small. spirais or coils of the cable from being stretched beyond their elastic limit, and especially is this true by reason of the factthat the reinforcing tangentially located members have their ends connected adj acentto the ends of the guard. In short, the present improvement provides a side-guard which has much of the efficiency of a woven wire side-guard in that the connections between the horizontal spirally formed cable and the bottom is such that the spirals of that cable cannot readily bepulled or stretched beyond their elastic limit.
In the drawing accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figures l, 2, 3, 4, v5 and 6, illustrate side views of different forms of this improved sideguard and spring reinforcement,

In allE the forms shown the spring 2 which kmay be ofany rsuitable form, as of woven wire 'or otherwise, is usually supported by suitable framework comprising cross-.bars 3 carried by corner brackets 4 secured 'to side-bars 5. In the present instance, the springer bottom is connected to the cross-bars 3'by helical springs'o.
In all the forms of this'improvement, it will be observed that the side-'guard comprises in part'one or more horizontally stretched members 7 maintained under tension,.th'ese members being connected at their ends to brackets 8 upstanding from the cross-bars 3. In practice these horizontal members may be of single wire formation or ofspiral cables as shown herein, and are preferably connected with the upstanding brackets 8 by coil springs 9.
EIn Figs. Y'1, 2 and 5, but one horizontal member -7' is provided, while in Figs. 3, 4 and 6, apa'ir of such members is provided, one below the other and spaced from each other.
It will also be noted in the various forms ofV the improvement that this side-guard comprises 'in ypart tangent reinforcing means 10 so connected with the spring 2 or with jthe horizontal members 7 thereof that the center of the' spring along its side edges is effectively reinforced- In Figs. l, 2, 3 and 4, a single reinforcing medium is'used, one at each side of the spring, whileV in' Figs. 5 and 6, a pair`0f suchireinforcing mediums is provided, the` cables' of" each pair 'crossing each other intermediate the c'enter and the ends of the spring at each side of such center.
In all the .forms of the present improvement it will also be observed that the reinforcing tangent supportingmeans is shown connected with the'sai'ne helical springs with which one of the horizontal members 7 is connected, although this may 'be otherwise in practice if desired. y
In the form shown in Fig. l, the reinforcing means 10 is connected with the spring,
2 'centrally thereof. The spring is usually provided with a reinforced edge 13 and the outer ends offthe cable 1t) are also'connected with the helical springs 9, thus forming an eiectiv'e means for reinforcing the side edges of `the spring.
In the form shown in Fig. 2, the reinforcing cable l0 is reversed, its outer ends being connected with the helical springs to which the ends of the spring 2 are connected, while it is connected centrally with the horizontal cable 7 and with the spring 2 by a suitable flexible connection 14.
In the form shown in Fig. 3, the reinforcement is connected with the spring Q centrally thereof and with the coil springs 9 with which the upper cable 7 connected, and also connected with the intermediate cable 7 as at 17.l
In Fig. 4, the structure shown in Fig. il is reversed in that the reinforcing cable is connected centrally thereof with the upper horizontal cable 7, while its ends are connected to the same springs to which the bottom is connected.
In Figs. 5 and 6, a pair of reinforcing cables 10 are provided, one connected eentrally thereof with the side of the spring Q, while its opposite ends are connected with the helical springs 9 with which the upper cable 7 is connected, while the other reinforcing cable l0 is connected centrally thereof with the cable 7, while its ends are connectedwith the helical springs 9 to which the spring bottom is connected. These reinforcing cables l0 are in turn connected together where they cross each other as at 15.
The structure shown in Fig. G is similar to that shown in Fig. 5, except that it has an intermediate horizontal cable 7 to which the reinforcing cables l0 are connected at the points where they cross cach other.
In all the forms of the improvement it will be seen that the tangentially and horizo-ntally located cables are so organized that the'spaee between the horizontally located cables is materially taken up by the tangentially located cables so that each sideguard of the spring is a unitary one. There is thus formed at each side of the spring a reinforced side-guard which not only prevents the flattening and spreading of the stuffed mattress, but which also reinforces the side edges of the spring at the points where it is the weakest and which reinforcement in turn serves not only the purpose of reinforcing the spring but of also iilling in the space between the horizontal cables in such manner that the protrusion of the stuffed mattress is prevented. This improvement thus accomplishes not only the purposes stated, but also enables the horizontally located cables to be used in anel'- cient manner and to keep them properly spaced one from the other, since these reinforcing cables connected as described materially prevent the horizontal cables from being stretched beyond their elastic limit.
By forming the side-guard in the manner 2 shown, not only are the side edges of the spring reinforced, but the side-guard isitself la i reinforced by members which form a part of such side-guard and the several elements .making up the guard are so connected that the whole guard will move as a unitary structure, while at the same time it will be flexible and maintained under tension so that it will normally return to its proper upright position when deflected therefrom. It will also be seen that the horizontal members of whatever form they may be, while connected with the spring bottom or with each other when several thereof are used, are nevertheless so connected with such bottom that weight on the bottom does not react merely on the cables intermediate the endsl thereof but also on the upright supports or standards S secured to the rigid cross-bars 8. rlhat is to say, by reason of the diagonally located cables l0, weight on the bottom is transmitted not merely to the cables 7 in a vertical direction, which would be the case if such cables were simply connected to the bottom by upright members, but is transmitted directly to the brackets 8 by reason of the fact that each reinforcement` comprises one or more cables each connected with the bottom directly, either at the ends of the cable or intermediate such ends, so that stra-in on the bottom at the center thereof is transmitted to the brackets 8, thus relieving the cables 7 of a large part of the strain which would otherwise come thereon if such cables were merely connected with the bottom by members which were not in themselves connected with the brackets S through the medium of the helical springs 9.

5. ,ffl spring having at each lengthwise ex tending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stulfed mattress, and including a connected tangentially located member, said tangentially located member having its opposite ends secured adjacent to the ends of the guard.

A spring comprising a flexible bottom member having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard member of substantially the same height from end to end for prevent-ing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and a tangentially located memberI spaced from one of said members its greatest distance mid-l way of the length of the bottom member.

A spring having at each lengthwise eX- tending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising a plurality of tangentially located members spaced midway of their length connected with the bottom and a plurality of horizontal members spaced from one another and connected with said tangentially located 'members 10. A spring having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and tangentially located means crossing the spaces between and connected with said members and vhaving its opposite ends connected adjacent to the ends of the guard.

A spring having at each lengthwise extending' side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and tangentially 'located means extending from end to end of the spring and crossing the spaces between said horizontal members.

A spring comprising a bottom, having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising a horizontal coiled member and a tangentially located reinforcing member connected with each other and with the spring bottom and having its opposite ends secured adjacent to the ends of thel guards.

A spring comprising a bottom having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stued mattress and comprising a horizontal member and a tangentially located reinforcing member connected with said horizontal member and also with the spring at the ends thereof. A spring comprising a bottom having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the fiattening Vand spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising a horizontal member and a tangentially located reinforcing member, said reinforcing member connected with the bottom intermediate its ends and also supported at its ends adjacent to the ends of the bottom and having connection with said horizontal member.

A lspring having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-guard of substantially'the same height from end to end for preventing rthe flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and a plurality of tangentially located reinforcing members crossing each other a plurality of times intermediate their ends and having connect-ion with each of said horizontal members intermediate their ends and with the bottom.

A spring having at each lengthwise extending side edge thereof a side-gnard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and a plurality of tangentially located reinforcing members crossing each other a plurality of times intermediate their ends and having connection with each of said horizontal members intermediate their ends and with the bottom, and coil springs connected with the ends of said horizontal and reinforcing members.

A spring comprising a bottom having at each lengthwise extending side-edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and a tangentially located reinforcing member, and an upright member carried by the bottom and connected with a member or members of said guard for maintaining the same spaced from the bottom.

A spring comprising a bottom having at each lengthwise extending side-edge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and comprising one or more horizontal members and a tangentially located reinforcing member, and an upright member carried by the bottom and connected with a member o r members of said guard for maintaining the same spaced from the bottom, said member being located midway of the length of the bottom.

A spring comprising a bottom having at each lengthwise extending sideedge thereof a side-guard of substantially the same height from end to end for preventing the flattening and spreading of a stuffed mattress and 'comprising a horizontal member consisting of interwoven spirally formed wires and a tangentially located reinforcing member having its opposite ends secured adjacent to the ends of the guard, and an upright member connected with the bottom and'effective to connect one of said members therewith and maintain it spaced therefrom.
