PRINTING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 16, 1914.
Application filed March 4, 1912. Serial N0. 681,375.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JAMES H. RnrNHaRDT, a citizen of the United States, and resident of East Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plltllg" Machines, of which the following is a speciication.
My invention has reference to printing upon continuous sheets, strips or webs ot paper or the like, and is particularly adapted to simultaneously printing upon one or both sides of one or more sheets, strips, or webs as the same are fed.
My invention is adapted for simultaneously printing and gathering or assembling a plurality of sheets, strips or webs and for uniting them together for the production of pamphlets, signatures for books, and the like, whereby the gathered or assembled sheets or webs may be cut off to the desired lengths after being secured together.
My invention comprises novel details of improvement and combinations of parts that will be more fully hereinafter set forth and then ointed out in the claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming part hereof, wherein,
Figure 1 is a partly broken side elevation of a printing machine embodying my invention; Fig. 2 is a plan view thereof, the sewing machine 30 being omitted; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail side view of a portion of Fig. 1; Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail cross section on the line 4, 4, in Fig, 1, and Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view of the feeding and gumming devices.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
In the drawings, the numeral 1 indicates a support of any suitable construction for the printing devices, which is shown carried by the extension 2 of frame 2. Support 1 is shown in the form of two spaced xnembersiFig. 1) carrying printing devices. I have v.shown a plurality of supports each for different sets of printing units or devices, and as the latter may all be substantially alike the description of one will suffice for all, as follows: 3, 3 indicate type carrying or printing rollers of any wellknown form, and 4, 4a indicate the corresponding impression cylinders or rollers geared to the printing rollers respectively, between which pass sheets, strips or webs 5 to be printed. In the example illustrated, the
tated as gear wheel 13 revolves.
While any suitable means may be provided for rotating the printing rollers 3, 8a, I have shown a gear wheel 13 journaled in suitable bearings :in frame 2 and adapted to be' rotated by pulley 14, which gear wheel meshes with gear 15 secured upon the shaft 7, whereby printing roller 3 will be ro- To coinmunicate corresponding motion to rinting `roller 3a the shaft 7 is shown provi ed With a beveled gear 16 meshing with a beveled gear or pinion 17 secured at one end to shaft 18 journaled in suitable bearings upon support 1, and having at its outer end a beveled gear or pinion 19 meshing with a. gear 20- on shaft 7 The arrangement shown is such that lthe printing rollers 3, 3. are rotated in opposite directions because said printing rollers are on opposite sides of sheet or web 5 `to print! on opposite sides of the latter as it is fed to the left in Fig. 1. The gear 15 meshes with a gear l5. for rotating cylinder or roller 4, and the rollers 3, 3 are likewise geared together by gears. Any suitable inking devices, indicated generally at 21, 21 are provided to apply ink to the ltype on the corresponding printing rollers 3, 3a. The cam 10 is vcarried by gear 13 in such position as to rock the arms 6, and thereby through the links 8 to communicate a corresponding rocking motion to the arms 6a, whereby the cylinders 4, 4a are caused tio havle'movement around the axes of printing rollers 3, 3a.
Since I have illustrated a number of printing units or devices of the character set forth, arranged around gear 13 so that the gears lo` of each set of printing units or devices are driven uniformlyl and simultaneously by gear `13, the variousA sheets or webs may be separately or independently fed ormay be fed to a common center or gathering point as illustrated in Flg. l. To this end Ihave shown rollers 25, 2 6, suitably journaled upon frame 2, between which rollers the sheets or webs 5 pass, and which. are thus gathered together. Said l support 2b- (Fig.' 5) and driven by a gear -are provided for securin vprinted sheets or webs toget stitching 31 (Fig. 2).-- By having the sheetsor webs 5 vsecured together after printing stitches-31 to `out.v`v For this they will be drawn or fed uniformly'bythe feed rolls 27, 27, so that proper registration offprinted matter upon said-sheets or webs will be effected, since the su erposed or collected webs cannot creepwit l respect to each other. j i g n y v Where a single-threadsewing'machine is i "used "I'provide means r for gumming "the prevent them from pullingpurpose I have shown rollers 32, 33, Abetween. which the stitched sheets or `webs,` ass, ,'(Fig. 5), a. gear 34 on the shaft f ,of roll)` 1 that'meshes with'gear 28, whereby the roll-f ers`f32,,33 are rotated.; Roller 32 is provided .with a peripheral groove receiving an absorptive ring or brush 36, such as cord or er 32`meshing withan idle gear 35 rope, alined with stitching 31 of the sheets or lwebs'5, which ring-orbrush engages a gumming roller 37 vdipping into a bath 38 of suitable gum, glue or the like, a transfer roller 39 in said bath being shown in engagement with roller 37, Fig. 5. Gear 35 may be secured to the shaft of roller 37 for rotating the latter.
The operation may be described as follows: With the machine adjusted as shown in Fig. l the several sheets, strips or webs 5 are passed between the corresponding sets of printing units or devices, from the guiding rollers a, whereby printing upon opposite sides of each sheet may be effected by type upon the corresponding printing rollers 3, 3, and such sheets are passed between the gathering or assembling rollers 25, 26, under the presser foot and needle of the sewing mac ine, and between the roller 27a, 27a, 32 and 33. The machine is then started `and as gear 13 rotates in the direction of the arrow in Fig. V1, the feeding rollers 27, 27n will cause the strips or webs 5 to be fed,
10 gathered webs may be fed by means-of feed- l ing rollers 27, 27a, 'suitably journaled upon and the sewing machine will stitch the gathered or assembled sheets together, and there by the latter will all be fed or pulled along uniformly because as they are secured together there can be no creeping of the sheets or webs, and during such time the printing rollers and'cylinders will be rotated through the gearing, printing simultaneously upon the opposite sides of the 'sheets or webs. Of course, but one side of a sheet or web need be printed upon. if desired'. By means of cam 10 operating upon the arms", the latter will be rocked, and by the arrangement of the cams shown the arms 6b will be moved outwardly gradually, but will more quickly be returned. The effect of this action is when arms 6b are moved outwardly, that the cylinders 4, 4 will be caused to move bodily,
' (while rotating) in a direction around the corresponding printing rollers, thereby advancing the printing contact toward the side yfrom which the type is advancing to cause printing upon sheets or webs 5 more rapidly than if the impression cylinders remained in set position, the sheets or webs at all times moving at uniform speed, the termination of the type upon the printing rollers being in such position that as soon as the last of the printing by a printing roller has occurred, the corresponding arm 6l will quickly return down cam 10 thereby drawing or returning the corresponding cylinders again toward the left 1n Fig. 1. By this means the time consumed in printing from a given length of type is reduced at each'stroke. The extent of the type upon a printing roller may vary in the direction of the circumference of the roller, as desired, since as soon as the printing from one rotation of a printing roller has ceased the corresponding cylinder returns to the left in Fig. 1 quicker than the surface speed of the printing roller, and for the next i1npression the cylinder advances toward the type on the printing roller, while the sheet or strip 5 is being fed. Regulation of the time or distance of movement of the cylinders with respect to the printing rollers around the axes of the latter, may be made in accordance with thc which latter may be replaced, as desired, upon gear 13 according to the extent of the type placed upon the printing rollers.
While I have illustrated two printing rollers in a set or unit and two corresponding cylinders connected together for movement around such printing rollers, whereby printing may occur simultaneously on opposite sides of the sheet or strip, it will be understood that my invention may be carried out to a desired extent by the use of a single printing roller and its corresponding cylinder, also that in the latter case the movement of the cylinder around the printing roller may be accomplished as set forth. It will,
character of cam 10,
also, be understood, however, that so far as the arrangement set forth for gathering or assembling a plurality of sheets or webs, printing upon them, and securing them together, while the webs are being fed, may be accomplished, without utilizing the specific arrangements of printing rollers and their cylinders set forth, as, for instance', the cylinders may be caused to remain set with respect to the rinting rollers by removing the cam 10 and olding the cylinder supports 6, 6 rigid.
Changes may be made in the details of construction and` varrangements set forth, within the scope of the' appended claims,
without departing from the spirit of the vention. i
