WATER-HEATER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, TUFFIELD GEORGE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Fort Frances, in the Province of Ontario and Dominion of Canada, have invented a new and useful VVater-Heater, of which the following is a specification.
The device forming the subject matter of this application is adapted to be assembled with a boiler wall and a boiler, for the purpose of doing away with the brick arch, and, at the same time providing a means whereby the water which is delivered to the boiler may be heated.
The invention aims to provide a novel means whereby a circulation of Water through the heater will be secured, means being provided for caring for the steam generated in the heater.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of, devices of that type to which the present invention appertains.
With the above and other objects in View which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the accompanying drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective showing the invention assembled, in duplicate form, with a boiler wall and a boiler; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal section of one casing; Fig. 3 is a transverse section of one casing; Fig. 4 1s a top plan of one casing, the lid thereof being removed.
In the accompanying drawing, the numeral 1 indicates a portion of a furnace wall, the numeral 2 indicating the grate and the numeral 3 indicating the boiler.
In carrying out the inventionthere is provided a casing O, the same comprising a body 4 of box-like form, the body having an upwardly arched bottom 5, at the ends of which flat supports 6 are located, the supports 6 resting upon the walls 1. Threaded studs 7 project upwardly from the body 4- and pass through a lid 8, nuts 9 being ap plied to the studs to hold the lid in place. with an opening 10, surrounded by a condult 11 secured to or formed integrally with the bottom 5. The conduit 11 extends up-' wardly through the lid 8 and may be provided with an outstanding flange 12, engaged beneath the lid 8, the flange 12 being equipped with studs lt which project through the lid, and nuts 15 being applied to the studs 14 to engage and hold in place i the lid 8.
Extended longitudinally of the body portion 1 of the casing O is a partition 16, dividing the interior of the easing into a main compartment 17 and into an auxiliary compartment 18. The partition extends upwardly from the arched bottom 5 into contact with the lid 8, and in the upper edge of the partition, notches 19 are formed, adjacent the lid. These notches 19 serve to permit steam, should any be generated, to pass from one compartment to the other, the lid 8 being equipped with a steam outlet 20.
In one end of the body 1 of the casing C there is a water inlet 21 and a water outlet 22. The water inlet 21 communicates with the main compartment 17 and the water outlet communicates with the auxiliary compartment 18. An overflow pipe 28 enters the end of the casing adjacent the inlet 21 and the outlet 22. The notches 19 in the partition 16 are located above the overflow pipe 28. That end of the partition 16 which is remote from the water inlet 21 and the water outlet 22 is cut away from its lower edge as indicated at 23 to form an opening 24:.
The practical operation of the structure is as follows ater is admitted to the main compartment 17 through the inlet 21. The water thence travels upwardly along the arched bottom 5 in the compartment 17 and, passing through the opening 21 existing below the lower edge 28 of the partition 16, moves into the auxiliary compartment 18. Thence, the Water travels upwardly along the arched bottom 5, in the compartment 18 and passes away through the water outlet 22. It is within the scope of the invention to employ a plurality of the casings G, disposed one behind the other-as shown in Fig. 1. and, under such circumstances, a pipe 25 forms a communication between the water outlet 22- of one casing and the water inlet 21 of an adjoining casing. From the water outlet 22 of the rearmost casing, a pipe 26 leads to. the boiler and discharges the heated water't-hereinto. At'times it maybe desirable to duplicate the structure shown in Fig. 1, and under such circumstances the foremost casing C may be provided with apipe 27 for the purpose of establishing a communication with another line of casings, duplicating the line shown in Fig. 1. Should steam be generated in either of the compartments 17 or 18, the same will flow away through'the steam outlet pipe20, the notches 19 in the partition '16 serving to permit circulation of steam in the ompartments, The overfiow'outlet 28 lies below "theijnt chfes 19am thus the notches 1 9"\ vill alw'ays remain open for the'pass age ofste'ain 1 The conduit 11 serves to permit liquid fuel to pass through the casing and into the space above the grate 2. 2. In a device of the class described, a casing comprising a body and a lid; 'a partition in the casing and extended betweenthe body 'a nd tlie lid, the partitiondividing the casing into a main compartment and an auxiliary compartment; a water inlet and water outlet at one end of the casing, the inlet communicating with the main compartment "and the outlet coinmunicating with. the auxiliary compartment; the partition having an opening, located adjacent the other end of the casing; the casing being provided with a water overflow and with steam outlet, and the partition having a steam passage located above the overflow.

In a device of the class described, a casingincluding a body having an upwardly arched bottom, and a lid; a fuel conduit connecting the lid and the arched bottom and constituting a support for the arched bottom and the lid; a partition connected with the arched bottom, the outer ends of the partition being connected with the easing 'andthe inner ends of the partition being connected to the conduit and the partition having an opening located adjacent one end of'the'casing; and a water inlet and a water outlet entering the casing adjacent its other end.
