Description
FRED. OTTO brennen, or BROOKLYN, n. D., NEW YORK.l
Letters Patent No. 110,018,` dated December 13, 1870.
h' IMPROVEMENT IN INKING APPARATUS FOR PRINTINGI-PRESSES..-
Th ASchedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, FRED. Or-ro DEGENER, of' Brooklyn, 1 3. D., in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improve- `vment in AInk-Distributers for Printing-Presses,- of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, and in which- Figure l represents a plan view ot certain mechanism for giving to theink-distributiug tahleits peculiar motion, with the table removed,'hut shown in dotted lines, and
Figure 2, a side or edge view ot' said. mechanism and table.
Similar letters of reference, indicate corresponding parts. l
My invention has for its object a thorongh'and even distribution-of the ink, which is onerof the most important functions ot' a printing-press, and the inven- -tioiirelates to ink-distributing surfaces, or tables of a revolving character.
In tables of this description, especially those -over which the inking-rollers do not. pass entirely, it is a well-known fact that, in rotating the table wholly in the one direction, which is the principle of action 'said tables have heretofore operated on, the inkiscollected more on one side than the other, and the hiking-rollers are consequently charged with an excessL of ink at their one end, so that the form of type is not as evenly supplied with ink as it ought tobe to insure good work.
My invention, which obviates this defect, consists in giving to au ink-distributing table a reciprocating intermittent rotary motion, which, prevents unequal piling of the ink and insures an 'equal distribution of r `vit over the inking-rollers.
,The invention also consists in a novel and advantageous combination of mechanism for attaining 'such end.
Referring to the accompanying drawing- A represents an ink-distributing table, arranged to tary motiominstead of being'madewholly in the one direction, is of a reciprocating intermittent character, by which action the iuking-rollers, in being'worked over the table, are more evenly supplied with ink, and the press is enabled to do better work, by reason'ot' the alternate circular action of the table breaking up any tendency to pile the ink more at one side than the other.
The means for communicating to the table A its specified peculiar movement may bev varied, but the following, while simple, I iind very eiicient for the purpose: p
B is a ratchet or crown-wheel, having motion in a continuous direction, as indicated bythe arrow as, and heilig driven in an intermittent manner by a pawl or pawls, actuated in timely order with and by the press. Said ratchet-wheel, which rotates on a center pivot, b, is arranged below the table A, and has pivoted vto it, in an ecentric relation, a pitman, 0,'whicl1 is con- A nected with a bent arm, c, ot' a toothed sector, 1D.
This sector turns on a pivot, as at (l, andgear's with a pinion, E, fast, in a concentric relation-to the table A or its shaft c.
By these means, on an lintermittent rotary motion being communicated to the ratchet-wheel B in one and the same direction, analternate circular or reciprocating intermittent m'ovementlis given to the table, as required.
What is here claimed, and desired to he secured hy Letters Patent, is y 1. An ink-distributing table or surface oi' or for a printing-press, having a reciprocating intermittent rotary motion, substantially as specified.
2. rlhe combination, with the ink-distributing table A, of the ratchet-wheel B,lthe pitman C, the toothed sector D, and the pinion E, essentially as shown and described, and for the purpose or purposes herein set forth.
Y FRED. OTTO DEGENER. Witnesses FRED. HAYNns, R. E. RABEAU.
