LOCK NUT AND BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN LIEBE DADLEY, a subject of the Kingdom of Great Britain, residing at the Port of London Authority, Victoria Embankment, London, E. (1, England, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Look Nuts and Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to an improvement in lock nuts and bolts, and its object is to provide a lock nut which will not work loose owing to vibration.
The accompanying drawings will serve to illustrate my invention, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section through the nut and bolt, with the lock in elevation and in the locking position. Fig. 2 is an elevation of the nut, bolt and lock with the lock in the unlocking position. Fig. 3 is a plan view of Fig. 1. Fig. 4 is a vertical section through the bolt, taken at right angles to the position shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a detached elevation of the lock. Fig. 6 is a vertical section through the lock, taken along the line XX of Fig. 5. Figs. 7, 9, and 11 are perspective views of the nut, showing different ways of forming slots in the top of the nut to coact with the lock. Figs. 8, 10 and 12 are respectively sections through the lock, taken substantially on the line X-X of Fig. 5, showing the configuration of the look as adapted (Fig. 8) to the construction shown in Fig. 7, (Fig. 10) to the construction shown in Fig. 9, and (Fig. 12) to the construction shown in Fig. 11.
Referring to the drawings: A indicates a bolt having a screw thread B. At the top of the bolt is a vertical slot C adapted to contain a lock D, which is pivoted at E, the
pivot E being situated in the transverse bore F of the bolt A (Fig. 4:).
G indicates a nut having a thread H which coacts with the thread B on the bolt, provided on its surface with shaped grooves such as are shown at I (Fig. 3), J (Fig. 7), K (Fig. 9), or teeth L (Fig. 11).
I do not in any wise limit myself to the particular character of the grooves, projections, indentations, holes or teeth which may be formed in the surface of the nut and which are adapted to coact with the lock D, such as are shown in the difierent figures, provided of course that the lock has such shape as will coact with the slots, projections, indentations, holes or teeth I, J, K and L formed in the surface of the nut.
In Fig. 8 it will be observed that the shape of the end of the lock D is such as to conform to the shaped grooves J in Fig. 7 and the same is true as regards grooves and locks of the other figures.
Situated under the lock D (Fig. 1) is a spring M, which is shaped to hold the lock either in the unlocked or locked position. It will be observed that the bearing point N at the end of the spring is to the left of the pivotal point E of the lock D, and that consequently when the lock is in the position shown in Fig. 1, the spring tends to hold the lock closed.
In Figs. 8 and 10 the end of the lock is shown bifurcated. In Fig. 8 the bifurcation at the right acts as a spring and coacts with the groove J to hold the lock in the closed position. In Fig. 10 both bifurcations serve as springs to coact with the grooves K of Fig. 9.
In the arrangement shown in Figs ll and 12, the teeth L upon the surface of the nut are made with one side vertical and the other side angular, so that when the lock D (Fig. 12) is pressed down upon the nut it forms a lock and prevents the nut from turning.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
1. In a nut look, a bolt provided with a slot in the end thereof and with a bore disposed at right angles to said slot, a look within said slot, a pin in said bore and adapted to pivotally retain said lock in said slot, a nut engaging projection on the free end of said lock, said projection beingproridcd with a recess, a spring carried by said lock and having one end secured in said recess and its other end adapted to contact the bottom of the aforesaid slot to retain the lock in an opened or closed position, and a nut, provided with radially disposed recesses for the reception of the aforesaid projection, carried by said bolt.
