Description
lttt Sietze 'am effet,
GEORGE P. BLAISDELL, :OE NORTH EASTON, MASSACHUSETTS.
Letters Patent No. 110,002,1dated'Decei-nber13, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SELF-,LUBRICATING AXLES.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
` vessels to carriage axles, in convenient proximity to the journals of th'e same, said reservoirs being connected with wicks which pass along grooves in the journals and lubricate the axle-boxes. It also consists in a device for regulating the ow of oil through sai'd wick by atmospheric pressure, as will hereinafter more fully appear.
In the drawing- A represents the axle, and
B, the journal.
On the end of axle A is the annular metallic vessel or reservoir C, which 'surrounds journal B, and constitutes the shoulder against which the inner cnd of the hub bearsin the usual manner.
D represents a wick of any ibrous material, which passes from the interior of vessel C along the surface of journal B, in a suitable groove or depression, and passes through the same at the outer extremity and is secured on the lower side.
Iters Patent, is-
E represents a thumb-screw, which lits a corresponding orilioe, e, in the top of vessel C.
Said screw is provided with the interior channel F, which is open at the lower end of the saine and at one side, as shown in fig. 2.
'The operation of' my invention is obvious. The vessel'O is llcd with oil, which is carried by wick D along the surface of thejournal, and lubricates the inner periphery of the box I as it revolves around it.
The channel F of screw E admits sufiicient air to allow the oil to tlow freely, but when not in use the upper end of the same may be closed by turning the screw downward, thus cutting off the supply of air and checking the flow of oil through the wick. The whole device is simple, eicient, compact, and convenient.
Having thus fully described my invention,
NVhat I claim as new, and desire tosecnre by Let- The combination of screw-plug E, provided with vent or channel F, annular reservoir O, and wick D,
all arranged and operated substantially' as described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my naine to this specification in the presence ot' two subscribing witnesses.
Witnesses: encuen P. BLAIsDnLL.
CARROLL D. WRIGHT, OnAnLRs F. BROWN.
