A. Vturtlier ebject of the invention is' to pro vide spring actuated pivotal connecting `.means between the handie and mop head, the

head comprises a tubular portion 6, freni depends a layer or layers of absorb The tubular portion (i is preferably triangu jlar, for receiving a, triangular or angular supporting' frame 8, preferably formed. of a strip of metal, bent into a triangular shape. Y
@Wing to the fact that the strip 8 'oonstiframe is arranged upon its edge, and since the saine hasn substantial vertical Width, it is obvious that the supporting franievvill berigid with respect to bending in the vertical plane. The strip 8 is provided at its ends with extensions 9,
which are spaced end parallel, as shown.
The numeral 10 designates a tubular` socket, receiving; therein a handle 11. At its inner end this tubuiar socket is provided arranged converging arms preferably formed integral therewith.
with extensions or heads 13, other 1n parallel relation, tween the extensions 9,
engaging each and arranged be as shown. The
'heads or extensions 18 are provided adjacent the Afree ends of the arms 12 With laterally extending stop lugs 13, adapted for engage ment with cam faces 14k, vformed upon the free ends of the extensions 9, whereby the downward movement of the socket 10 With relation to the mop head 5 will be limited when-lugs 13 engage cani faoes 14. The
eXtensionsQv and 13 are provided with openings 14A, 1n registration with each other, for transverse pivot element, in this instance, shown as a bolt '15. Arranged upon opposite sides of the extensions 9 are headed spacing sleeves 16, surrounding the pivot element 15, asshown.
The Anumeral 17 designates suitably stiiie coil springs, arranged upon .the spacing sleeves 16, es shown. Corresponding-ends extended outwardly in the form of spring arms 18, having their free ends bent downwardly for providing hooks or. lateral extensions 19, fitting Within the space between the converging arms' 1'2. The opposite ,corresponding ends ofthe coil springs 17 are extended in the form of spring arms 20, having their free ends bent to forni loops or inverted substantially U- shaped elements 21, which straddle the end portions of the tubular portion 6 ofthe mop head, the saine having firm clamping engagement therewith, whereby these free ends of the tubular portion of the mop head canratented June 16, 1914i.. y
not turn or partake of other improper movements with relation to the frame 8.
In. the use of my improved mop, the mop head is laced in engagement with the Hoor or the li e to 'he cleaned, polished, or oiled,
and the handle 11 may be moved to any desired angular position with relation thereto for convenient manipulation of the mop. It
' is obvious -that the yielding pivotal connection between the mop head and handle'is of such a construction 'that the same is entirely l self-adjusting, Wherebythere is no necessity of the operator soiling the fingers by manipulation of parte of this connection. In my i.; present construction the Vhandle is freely pivotally connected with :the mop head frame to be swung' with relation thereto, the spring or springs serving to oppose this Amovement in one direction, with an -increased force as the swingmg movement in sorted to Without departing from the spirit of the invention or the seope of the subjoined claim.
Having described the invention, what I claim is l Y Ihe combination with a mop head supporting frame provided with apertured extensions, of a handle attaching element hav ing apertured extensions arranged adjacent the first named apertured extensions, a pivot element passing through the apertured eX- tensions, and 4springs arranged upon opp@ site sides of the apertuled extensions, having portions thereof coiled about and engaging the pivot element, corresponding ends engaging the handle `attaching element, and the opposite corresponding ends4 provided Ywith approximately Ushaped loops adapted to receive portions of the mop head and have .A
clamping engagement therewith.
In testimony whereof I aix my signature -in presence of two witnesses. I
WILLIAM SEVERNS.
