market equipped with devices that cooperate with certain manipulative devices in such a manner, that, when said manipulative devices are operated, the check issuing mechanism will be rendered operative. The objeetion to this class of machines has been that it is impossible to alter the control of the check issuing mechanism without reconstructing the machine.
It is the principal object of this invention to provide adjustable mechanism which at the will of the operator may be brought into cooperative relation with one or more of a plurality of manipulative devices so as to render the check issuing mechanism operative when said manipulative devices are operated, with which the adjustable mechanism is brought into cooperative relation.
With this and incidental objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations of parts the essential elements of which are set forth in appended claims and a preferred form of embodiment of which is hereinafter shown with reference to the drawings which accompany and form part of this specification. For the purpose of illustration, this invention has'been shown applied to a machine of the type shown in the Cleal and.
Reinhard patent but it is to be understood that this 'invention'is not limited to this type tive relation with a bank of companion special keys, which may represent departments or different classes of transactions. Upon the depression of any one of the keys with which its companion adjustable device is in cooperative relation a plate carrying said devices will be moved rearwardly. This plate is connectedby suitable intervening mechanism to one of a pair of feed rollers, which is normally out of cooperative-relation with its companion roller, but which upon the movement of said plate will be brought into cooperative relation therewith, so that, when said rollers are subsequently rotated a check strip will .be fed into position to have printed thereon suitable characters from a set of type carriers after which that portion of the strip containing printed matter will be severed from the rest of the strip and ejected from the machine.
The machine to which this improvement has been shown applied is provided with a plurality of banks of amount keys 1, each bank of keys controlling the differential movement of a segment 2. This segment 2 meshes with a gear 3, which in turn meshes with gears 1 and 5 that actuate the registering and indicating mechanisms respectively. Each one of these gears 3 is connected to the inner end of one 'of a series of nested sleeves 6, the outer ends of which carry type carriers 7 (Fig. 1). These sleeves surround a shaft 8 which is given a complete rotation at each operation of the machine, as is fully shown and described in the aforementioned Clea-l and Reinhard patent. Secured to this shaft 8 adjacent to the type carriers 7 is a gear 9, which through gears 10, 11 and 12 drive feed rollers 13 and l 'which rollers are connected to the gears 11 and 12 respectively. These rollers 13 and 14 are normally inoperative, but when in operatlve condition they will feed a check strip 15 from a supply roll 16 through a chute 17 to a position upon a table 18. adjacent to the type carriers 7, so that when the table 18 isreciprocate'd a platen 19 carried by said table will take an impression upon a check strip from saidtype carriers. The table or platen carrying frame 18, as is well known in the art and fully described in the aforementioned patent, is reciprocated three times upon each rotation of theshaftS, which reciprocations are for the following purposes; first, inking the type carriers; second, taking aninipression upon a check strip, and
third, the taking ofan impression upon a record strip 20 carried by the table and whichis fed from a supply roll 21 to a storage roll 22, by means not shown, upon the movement of'the table or platen carrying frame 18.

With this general understanding of the operation of the type of machine to which this invention has been applied, a description of the invention as applied thereto will now be given, 2 l l The chief object of the present invention is to. provide a flexible control of the check issuing mechanism, that is to provide means whereby, atthe "will of the operator, the check issuing mechanism may be placed underthe control of any one of a plurality of manipulative devices.
"A bank of special or department manipulative devices in the form of keys 36 is located at the left hand end of the machine, and these keys control a type carrier 7 in a manner similar to the previously described amount keys 1-. Adjacent 'to this bank of specialkeys a plate 33 whichis supported bylarms 29 and 82, which inturn are pivotally mounted upon the frame work of the machine.- The free end ofarm 29 is providedwith spin 30 which plays in an elongated Yslot'31 ofth'e arm 32, which construction permits the simultaneous rocking of thearms 29 and 32 when the plate 33-carried by'said armsv is moved rearwardly.
Pivotally mounted upon the plate 33 are a plurality of pawls 31, one for each special key, which are adjustable into and out of cooperative relation with pins projecting from said special keys 3G. The free ends of said pawls play between pins 12 projecting from the plate 33, and said pawls are frictionally held in their adjusted positions by springs 38 interposed between the heads of screws 37, upon which said pawls are mounted, and the hubs of the pawls (Fig. 2).
The plate 33 is provided with radial slots 50, through which the key pins 35 pass if the pawls 3 1 are adjusted out 01' cooperative. relation therewith. To facilitate the adjustment of said pawls a flange -13 proiects laterally from each one of same, by which flanges the attendant may move any of the pawls into or out of cooperative relation with the pins 35 of the special keys 36. A lid 10 pivoted to the machine normally covers the adjustable pawls and is provided with a lock 4-1 so 'as to prevent unauthorized manipulation of the adjustable pawls or devices 34.
'By reference to Fig. 1 it will be seen that the second, fifth and sixth pawls 3-1: counting from the upper end of the plate 33 are in cooperative relation with the pins 35 of the companion special keys, while the remaining pawls are out of such relation. It is ol vious from this that it either the second, fifth or sixth key is operated, the plate. 33 carrying the pawls will be moved rearwai'dly, which rearward movement. as hereafter described, will render-the feed rollers operative;
The feed rollers 13 and 1-1, as previously stated, are normally inoperative, and the lower roller 11 is mounted upon a movable bearing'25,'which has eccentric studs 26 proj ecting from each end thereof into the frame work of the )rinting mecl'ianism. "Projecting downwar dly from the inner one of the eccentrics 26 is an arm 27, which is connected by link 28 to the arm 29, which supports one end of the movable plate 33.
From the above description it will be seen that when one of the special keys 36 is depressed, with which its pawl 34 is in cotiperative relation, the plate 34- will be mo ed rearwardly and'through the arm 25), link 28 and arm 27 rotate the eccentrics 26 in a clock-wise direction, which movement, through the bearing 25, will raise the roller 1& into cooperative relation with the roller 13, so that upon the rotation of shaft 8 the said rollers will feed the check strip to the table 18 to have an impression taken thereon from the type carriers 7.
' It is obvious from the above description that a very simple mechanism is provided for altering the control of the check issuing mechanism sothat at the will of the operator "the "said mechanism maybe rendered operative or inoperative upon the entering of any one of a plurality of transactions.
While the form of mechanism herein shown and described is admirably adapted to fulfil the objects primarily stated, it is to be understood that it is not intended to confine the invention to the one form of embodiment described but that it is susceptible of embodiment in various forms all coming within the scope of the claims which follow.
What is claimed is:
1. In an accounting machine, the combination with a single check issuing mechanism, of an operating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether or not a check is to be issued, a series of manipulative devices, and adjustable devices cooperating with the manipulative devices for determining whether a check is to be issued by the check issuing mechanism upon the operation of the operating mechanism.
2. In an accounting machine, the combination with a single check issuing mechanism, of an operating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether 'or not a check is to be issued, a bank of keys, and devices adjustable at will and cooperating with the keys for determining whether a check is to be issued by the check issuing mechanism upon the operation of the operating mechanism.
3. In an accounting machine, the combination with a single check issuing mechanism, of an operating mechanism therefor con structed to be operated whether or not a check is to be issued, a bank of depressible keys, and devices adjustable at will in the path of said keys for the purpose of placing the check issuing mechanism in operative condition when any of the keys is depressed so that upon the operation of the operating mechanism a check will be issued.
4. In an accounting machine, the combi nation with a pair of rollers for feeding a check strip, of an operating mechanism for said rollers, a bank of keys, and devices adjustable at will and cooperating with the keys for determining whether the check strip is to be fed by the feed rollers upon the operation of the operating mechanism.

In an accounting machine, the combination with a pair of normally inoperative rollers for feeding a check strip, of an operating mechanism for said rollers constructed to be operated whether or not the strip is to be fed, a bank of keys, and devices adjustable at will and cooperating with the keys for rendering the feed rollers operative so that the check strip will. be fed by the actuation of the operating mechanism.
7. In an accounting machine, the combination with a type carrier for recording upon a check strip, of normally inoperative means for feeding the strip to the type carrier, an operating mechanism for the feeding means constructed to be operated whether or not the strip is to be fed, a bank of keys, and devices adjustableat will and cooperating with the keys for rendering the feeding means operative so that the check strip will be fed by the actuation of the operating mechanism.
8. In an accounting machine, the combination with a type carrier for recording upon a check strip, of normally inoperative means for feeding the strip to the type carrier, an operating mechanism for the feeding means constructed to be operated whether or not the strip is to be fed, a bank of keys, devices adjustable at will and cooperating with the keys, for rendering the feeding means operative so that the check strip will be fed by the actuation of the operating mecl1anism,fand means actuated by the operating mechanism for severing the check strip.
9. In an accounting machine, the combination with a type carrier for recording upon a check strip, of normally inoperative rollers for feeding the strip to the type can rier, an operating mechanism for the feeding rollers constructed to be operated whether or not the strip is to be fed, a bank of depressible keys, a movable plate mounted adjacent to the keys and having connecti ons for rendering the feed rollers operative when said plate is moved, and devices adjustable at will mounted upon the plate and cooperating with the keys for the purpose oimoving the plate when a key is operated so that the check strip will be fed by the actuation of the operating mechanism.
10. In an accounting machine, the combination with a type carrier for recording upon a check strip, of normally inoperative rollers for feeding the strip to the type carrier, a bank of depressible keys, a movable plate mounted adjacent to the keys and having connections for rendering the feed rollers operative when said plate is moved, devices mounted upon the plate and adjustable at will into cooperative relation with the keys so that when the keys are depressed the plate and connections will be moved.
11. In an accounting machine, the combination with a check issuing mechanism, of an operating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether or not a position. I

In an accounting machine, the combination with a ticket issuing mechanism, of an'"jo'perating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether or not a check is to be issued, a series of manipulative devices, adjustable devices cooperating with the manipulative devices for determiningwhether' a check is to be issued by the check issuing mechanism upon the operation of the operating mechanism, and locking means for preventing the adjustment of said Copies of this patent may be obtained for v adjustable devices and constructed to be unlocked to permit the latter to be adjusted.
14. In an accounting mechanism, the combination with a severing mechanism for severing checks from their record strip, a feeding mechanism for said record strip, operating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether or not a check is to be issued, a deprcssible key, an adjustable device cooperating therewith for determining whether a check is to be issued by the check issuing mechanism upon the operation of the operating mechanism, and frictional means for holding said device in its adjusted position.
15. In an accounting mechanism, the com bination with a check issuing mechanism, of an operating mechanism therefor constructed to be operated whether or not a check is to be issued, a series of manipulative devices, and devices adjustable to effective and ineffective positions independently of the operation of said manipulative devices and cooperating with the latter for determining whether a check is to be issued by the check issuing mechanism upon the operation of the operating mechanism.
