To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, FRANK W. BURPEE andJoHN H. BURPEE, subjects of the King of Great Britain, and residing at the c ty of Bellingham, in the county of Whatcom and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacle-Forming Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention pertains to an automatic machine of the above type primarily devised for working up receptacle bodies from previously prepared paper blanks, and is directed in particular to the provision of a self-feeding progressive machine capable of bending a sector-shaped blankto conical form, and finally ejecting the formed. article.
Further, the invention resides in the provision of novel mechanism for bending a blank to form by successive operations commencing on a midway section of the blank. Another object consists in novel provision for feeding the blanks.
Further objects will be set forth as the description progresses'and those features of construction, arrangements and combinations of parts on which we desire protection, succinctly defined in our annexed claims.
With reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the.,several views: Figure 1 is a plan of a machine embodying the features of the invention with the blank feeding cross head in advanced position. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary sectional plan of the same. Fig. 3 is a side elevation in partial section on lines 33 and 3, 3 of Fig. 1 with portions of the carrier and feeding device broken away, a blank beingindicated by broken lines, as positioned by the feeding device. Fig. 4 is a longitudinal vertical section of the feeding device taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 2, and Fig.
5 is a fragmentary elevation of the carrier viewed. from the side of the form closing track with a forming device illustrated in operation on a receptacle blank at the co nmencement of the final step in the bending process.
In the present embodimenta circular series of forming devices 1 are provided in connection with respective radially disposed lever arms 2 which are engaged'vvith fulcrums 3 on a horizontal rotatablecarrier 4 and provided with rollers 2F engagedewith an elevated cam track 5', secured to a standard 5 having a step journal 5 supporting carrier 4.
' Suitable provision is made for advancing and arresting carrier 4 so that the devices 1 will be presented successively to the blank feeding device 6 which is operated, as will be later understood, to forward a blank to a device 1 during each pause of the carrier. The mechanism for advancing carrier 4 conveniently comprises a spring pressed pallet 40 related to a continuous series of teeth 4' of carrier 4*and mounted on a vertically disposed swing arm 41 provided with a slide block 41'- which is connected with a crank 42 of a. horizontal shaft 43 journaled on standard 5 and connected by spur gearing .45 with a drive shaft 46 towhich power is applied in any convenient manner to rotate shaft 43 continuously in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 3. The provision for arresting carrier 4 is in the form of a beveled segmental disk 44 secured to shaft 43 in angular relation to crank '42 for e ngagement in a successive manner, with a circular series of correspondingly beveled recesses 4" of carrier 4 to arrest the latter at the termination of each active movement of swing arm 41. Feeding device 6 comprises a cross head 30 mounted for reciprocation,

Positioned over thepath of head 30 is a container for the blanks in the form of a sector shaped frame 35 arranged with one end wall extending in a common direction with the line of feed and provided with forwardly extending bottom and end guides as 36, 36 for the blanks, as b,- which are advanced successively, frombeneath the front wall of the containerand positioned under a friction back stop 30, by a toothed engaging device 37 fixed to head 30. Each blank advanced is forwarded from stop 30' and positioned in a formingdevice 1 by gravity set push catches 38 which are pivoted on head 30in suitable arrangement forwardly of device 37 forengagement with the rear edges of the advanced blank during primary advance movement of the head from its retracted position, as indicated by broken lines in Fig. 4. a

Each device 1 includes oppositely .'disposed exterior form sections 1O, 10 hinged to an intermediate similar form section 11 fixed to an arm 2, and an interposed mandrel 12 provided with a waste adhesive receiving groove 12, and having an enlarged base 12' provided with stem extensions 13 which are pivoted to said arm for upward and downward adjustment of the mandrel with respect to section 11 to thereby open the form and subsequently efi'ect a primary bending operation on the blank, as will be later understood. This adjustment of mandrel 12 is conveniently effected, by and during relatively reverse movements of the free end of arm 2, through the medium of a roller 13' mounted on an angular extension of one stem 13 of the mandrel and engaged with a respective angular cam track 14 fixed to carrier 4. In this connection it will be ob served that track 5 is provided with an angular raised section 5 which is adapted to effect reverse angular movements of arm 2 in a direction lengthwise of the mandrel l2 and extends in the angle of device 6 to support said arm with the form section 11 inclined downwardly toward and with its outer end just beneath the plane of feed guides 36. while cam track 14 is adapted to guide roller 13 for upward and downward adjustments of mandrel 12, as form section 11 is respectively elevated and lowered, and further sustain said roller, during the blank feeding operation, with lower surface of the mandrel immediately above and substantially parallel with the feeding plane. Through the angular adjustment of form section 11 and mandrel 12, they, when the form is open, will diverge from their inner ends. Thus, their greatest relative spacing will occur at their outer or receiving ends with a view of facilitating the entrance of the blank, see Fig. 3. It will further be observed, that through the convergence of these form parts, the blank when fed into the form will be bowed or bent to concave form, with its intermediate portion bearing against the lower side portion of the mandrel. At such time the side edge portions of the blank are engaged with and overlie the form sections 10, as indicated b dotted lines in Fig. 3, to be bent by the atter against the mandrel, in a manner to be hereinafter set forth. 7
Provision is made in each device 1 for retaining the blank forwarded thereto in The form sections 10, of each device 1 are provided with arm extensions equipped with wipers or rollers 10 for cooperation with vertically movable push bars 15, mounted in slide ways 15 of form section 11 and provided with hearing rollers 15 for elevating and lowering track sections, as 16, 17, whic are positioned in the path of carrier 1 at opposite sides of the angle of track section 5*. Each slide way 15 is equipped with a releasable back stop for its bar 15 in the form of a spring pressed ball 18 mounted in a housing, as 18, for pro'ection into a suitable cavity of the bar when the latter is brought to its elevated position.
Each forming device 1 is provided with ejecting mechanism comprising oppositely disposed curved arms 20, 20 journaled on a vertical bracket 21 of base'12' of the mandrel 12 in fixed connection with a rock crank 22 and provided with angular terminations 20, 20 which, when the formin device is closed, lie in respective recesses 0? base 12 in opposing relation to the base end of the formed receptacle body. Crank 22 is connected with arm 2 of the forming device by a restraining link 23 which serves to hold the crank for angular movement to advance and retract the arms 20, 20 by and during upward and downward adjustment of the mandrel 12 with respect to the form section 11.
In operation, movement of carrier 4 to bring a forming device 1 to its receivin position is followed by an advancement 0 cross head 30, by which latter a blank is positioned in the forming device with due regard for the lapping of the gummed edge portion of the blank over the opposite edge portion thereof directly at the rear side of the mandrel groove 12. As roller 2' of the arm 2 traverses the descending end portion of the track section 5, from section 11 is elevated and mandrel 12 applied therein to effeet a primary bending operation on the blank, which is followed by the overlapping of the blank end portions by operation of form sections 10 as push bars 15 are elevated in passing track 16. During further movement of carrier 4, push bars 15 are brought to a lowered position by track 17, subsequently to which arm 2 passes the ascending portion of track section 5 and tilts by gravity with a consequent upward adjustment of mandrel 12, through the medium of roller 13' and track 14, to thereby force open form sections 10, and an outward movement ofthe ejecting arms 20, efi'ected through adjustment of crank 22 in opposition to link 23. It will be observed that crosshead 30 moves to and fro in a path extending lengthwise and obliquely of a forming device when the latter is in its open and receiving position, as clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 2. By this construction, one side edge portion of the tapered blank 1) moves in a straight line, under discharge spout 39, during its advance movement. Further, through this oblique advance or feeding movement of a blank into an open formin device, the action on the blank as it is ted both along and transversely of the mandrel 12 is to smooth it and thereby prevent any tendency toward rumpling or accidental turning over of the forward edge portion of the blank.

1. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form including relatively fixed and mo 'able sections, a mandrel movable sidevvise with respect to said exterior form to an angular position in the path of said movable form section for opening the latter, and a common movably mounted means for said mandrel and fixed form section.
2. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form section including a movable section, a mandrel. means releasably engaging the movable section of the exterior form section for closing the same about the mandrel, and mcans for moving the mandrel to open the exterior form section.
3. In a forming machine of the character described, a form comprising an exterior form element and a mandrel element one of which is swingingly supported at one end portion for swinging toward and from the other, said exterior form element including a movable section, and means for swinging said movable element and thereby effecting opening of said movable section of said extcricr form element.
4-. In a forming machine of the character described, a rotatable carrier, a form on said carrier comprising a mandrel and an exterior form including a. movable section, said mandrel being supported for swinging into the path of the movable section of said exterior form, and means for swinging said mandrel on said carrier to effect positive opening movement (it said movable form section.
5. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form including oppositely disposed hinged form sections, and an interior form, one of said forms being movable to an angular position with respect to the other toapply said interior form against said hinged form sections to open the latter.
6. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form section including a movable section, a mandrel, means releasably engaging the movable section of the exterior form section for cl sing the same about the mandrel, means for disengaging said firstmeans from the movable section prior to opening the exterior form section,
and means for moving the mandrel to open the exterior form section.
7. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form section, a mandrel constituting an inner t'orm section, a supporting means. means supporting said section and mandrel for movement in common on said supporting means. and means for effecting relatively opposite movements of one of said form sections by movement of the other.
8. In a forming machine. a forming device comprising a movable carrier. coiiperating interior and exterior forming members, movably mounted means on said carrier carrying one of said forming members and swingingly supporting the other .and means whereby said members are simultaneously moved in opposite. directions during movement of said movablv mounted means.
9. In a forming machine of the character described. a vertically tiltable mandrel. a verticallv tiltable exterior term. and means for tilting said mandrel and exterior term with increased movement of one over the other.
10. In a forming machine of the character described, an exterior form. a mandrel. and means for simultaneously tilting said mandrel and exterior form with an increased movement of one with respect to that of the other.
11. In a forming machine of the charac terdescribed. an interior form, an exterior form having a relatively movable section. means supporting said forms for tilting movement in a common direction. means for moving said forms to effect movement of one thereof toward and from the other. and means for moving said movable section independently of the exterior form proper to- 'ard said interior form.
12. In a forming machine of the character described. exterior and interior forms. means supporting said terms for movement in common, said exterior form having an outwardlv movable section. and means supporting said forms for angular movement toward and. from one another.
13. In a forming machine of the character described. exterior and interior forms. means supporting said forms for movement in common, and means for moving said forms siniultaneousl v and one thereof to an inclined position with respect to the other form.

In a forming machine ct the character described, exterior and interior forms, said exterior form having a relatively movable section, means supporting said forms for swinging movement toward and from each other, and means for swinging said forms simultaneously in relatively opposite directions 15. In a forming machine of the character described, exterior and interior forms, movable supporting means, a swinging member pivoted on said supporting means and carrying one of said forms, means supporting the other of said forms on said member for movement by swinging movement thereof, and means for swinging said member by movement of said supporting means.

In a forming machine of the character described, exterior and interior forms, supporting means, a swinging member pivoted on said supporting means and carrying one of said forms for movement toward and from the other, supporting means for the other of said forms movably supported on said member, means for swinging said member, and means for simultaneously moving said last named supporting means on said member.

Ina forming machine of the character described, exterior and interior forms, supporting means, a lever pivotally mounted on said supporting means and carrying one of said forms, means pivotally supporting the other of said forms on said lever, means for swinging said'lever, and means connected with said second named means for holding the same for relative swinging on said lever. a 18. In a forming machine of the character described, a forming device comprising exterior and interior forms movably supported, means for moving said forms to an open position wherein they converge in the direction: of their lengths, and means for feeding blanks into said device and through the more widely spaced end portions of its component forms.

In a forming machine of the character described, exterior and interior forms, means for supporting one of said forms for movement toward and from the other, an ejector swingingly supported for swinging movement longitudinally of one of said forms for removing the formed article, and means for swinging said ejector by and during movement of said first means.
20. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising an interior form and an exterior form including relatively fixed and independently movable sections, a common support for said forms, means for moving one of said forms toward and from the other, vertically movable means on said carrier for moving the movable sections of said exterior form successively, and means for operating said vertically movable means alternately.
21. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, exterior and interior forms mounted on said carrier for angular movement in the direction of their length, and means for moving one of said forms toward the other by movement of said carrier.
22. In a formin machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, exterior and interior forms mounted on said carrier for angular movement in the direction of their length, and means for moving one of said forms vertically toward the other by movement of said carrier.
23. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, an exterior form including a movable section, an interior form, and means for tilting one of said forms endwise with respect to the other to open said movable section by movement of said carrier.
24. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, exterior and interior forms mounted on said carrier for relative angular movement, and means for angularly moving said forms on said carrier in relatively opposite directions by movement of the latter.
25. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, exterior and interior forms mounted on said carrier for relative angular movement, and means for angularly moving said forms simultaneously with respect to said carrier and in relatively opposite directions by and during movement of the latter.

In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, an exterior form supported on said carrier having an intermediate and opposite relatively movable sections, an interior form mounted on said carrier, and means for moving one of said forms into an angular position with respect to the other to apply said movable sections against said interior form by movement of said carrier.
27. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprisin cooperating forms, a swingingly supported member on said carrier carrying said forms, means for swinging said member by movement of said carrier, and means for effecting relative movement of said forms by movement of said member.
28. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising cooperating forms, a member swingingly supported on said carrier for vertical movement and carrying said forms, means for elevating and lowering one of said forms with respect to the other form by swinging movement of said member, and means for swinging said member by movement of said carrier.

In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising codperating forms, a member swingingly supported on said carrier and carrying one of said forms, means movably supported on said member carrying the other of said forms, means for swinging said member by movement of said carrier, and means for holding said first means during movement of said member for relative movement of the latter.

In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising coiiperating forms, a member swingingly supported on said carrier and carrying one of said forms, means for swinging said member by movement of said carrier, and means operated by and during movement of said member for swinging the other of said forms toward and from the form carried by said member.
31. In a forming machine of the character described, a horizontal carrier supported for movement, a forming device mounted on said carrier, said forming device comprising cooperating forms, a radially disposed lever pivotally supported on said carrier and carrying one of said forms, and a cam track engaged vith said lever for swinging the sameby and during movement of said carrier.
32. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a form mounted on said carrier, a lever pivotally mounted on said carrier for vertical swinging, a second form mounted on the outer end portion of said lever and coiiperating with said first named form, and a cam track arranged in the path of said carrier and engaged with said lever to control the swinging movement thereof by movement of said carrier.
33. In a forming'machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a form mounted on said carrier, a lever pivotally mounted on said carrier for vertical swinging, a second form mounted on the outer end portion of said lever and cooperating with said first named form, an ejector for the formed article, means controlling the swinging movement of said lever, and'means for operating said ejector by and during tilting of said lever.
34. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising cooperating forms one of which is provided with a relatively movable section, means for moving said last named form with respect to the other by and during movement of said carrier, and means arranged in the path of said carrier for moving said movable form section independently of the form proper.
35. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, an interior form on said carrier, an exterior form on said carrier having a relatively movable section, means for moving one of said forms with respect to the other, means on said carrier for moving said movable exterior form section toward said interior form, and means arranged in the path of saidcarrier for operating said last named means by and during movement of said carrier.
36. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, an interior form on said carrier, an exterior form on said carrier having a relatively movable section, means for moving one of said 'forms with respect to the other, vertically movable means on said carrier for moving said movable exterior form sect-ion toward said interior form, and means for operating said last named means by movement of said carrier.
37. In a forming machine of the character described, a carrier supported for movement, a forming device on said carrier comprising interior and exterior forms, said exterior form having a relatively movable section, means for moving one of said forms to apply I said interior form againstthe movable exterior form section to thereby open the latter by and during movement of said carrier, vertically movable means on said carrier for closing said exterior form section, and means in the path of said carrier for operating said last named means by movement of said carrier.
38. In a forming machine of the character described, a supporting means, exterior and interior forms mounted on said supportingv means, said interior form being formed with a longitudinal peripheral groove, means for feeding a blank between aid forms, means for applying adhesive material along one edge portion of a blank, and means for moving said exterior form to bend the blank over saidinterior form to overlap the edges of the blank in proximity to the longitudinal groove of said form.

In a forming machine of the character described, a vertically movable support, a forming device on said support comprising inner and outer forms, means for opening and closing said forming device, means for feeding a tapered blank horizontally between the forms of said device in a path extending obliquely thereof, and means for applying an adhesive along one of the inclined edges of a blank during its advance movement by said last named means.
