To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN J. DOYLE, ,a' citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of New 'York, borough of Main hattan, in the county and State of New York,. have invented a new and Improved Autograph Time Recorder for Locks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description. The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved autograph time recorder for looks such as are used on doors and the like, the recorder being'arranged to produce a permanent record of the opening and closing of the lock for any given period of timev andin sucha manner thattampering with the lock during this period is recorded.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a clock-driven drum containing a record sheet, a stylus mounted 'adja-; cent the said drum and adapted to mark on said record sheet, andactuating means for the stylus and controlled by amovable member of the look so that the stylus-makes a plurality of lines indicating opening and closing of the lock, and a line approximately at rightangles to the said opening and closing lines to indicate the period of time between the opening and closing lines.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forminga part of this'specification. in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the time recorder for locks as applied and with the casing in section; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is an enlarged face view of a portion of the record sheet; Fig, 4 is an inverted sectional plan view of the time lock on the line H of Fig. 1' and with the parts in position when the lock is unlocked; Fig. 5 is a similar view of the same with the parts in position when the door is locked; Fig. 6" is an inverted sectional plan view of the time lock on the line 6-6 of Fig. 1 and with the parts in position when the door is unlocked;

On the door A is secured a casing or other support B for the autograph time recorder, and on the said support B is mounted a locking device C of any approved construction, and preferably providedwith a key-controlled bolt C' adapted to engage a keeper 0 -011 the door casing A to lock the door A in closed-position. On the support B is ournaled the shaft D of a vertically-disposed drum D having the lower end of its shaft D coupled to a driven shaft E of a clockwork E of any approved construction suitable clamps D The record sheet F'is provided with vertical lines F spaced equal distances apart and representing hours and subdivisions the numerals F indicating the hours being marked on the corresponding hour lines, preferably at the top thereof. As shown, the record; sheet indicates twelve hours and the clockwork E rotates the drum D once every twelve hours. The record sheet F is further provided with a spiral line F the convolutions of which correspond to-those of the screw rod' I, which makes one revolution to every revolution of the drum D, so-that at each revolution of the screw rod H the stylus G travels a distance corresponding to that between adjacent convolutions of the spiral line F 'In practice, the stylus is set to mark in the ,space between adjacent convolutions of the' spiral line F. In order to, indicate a: m. and p, m. the spiral line is heavy for one convolution and light for the next following convolution, as will be readily understood by reference to the drawings. As shown, the record sheet is ar-' ranged for obtaining a weeks record of the opening and closing of the locking device C.

.port B and extending the length of the drum D, and the upper end of the, said rock arm K is provided with a crank arm K having a wrist pin K engaging a slot L in a plate cam L attached to the bolt C to The cam slot L has one end L parallel with the line of movement of the bolt C and the endL leads to the rearwardly-curved portion L terminating in a forwardly-curved portion L lead ing tothe other end L of the slot and which end L is parallel to the end L When the bolt C is in withdrawn position and the door A is consequently unlocked then the Wrist pin K extends 1n the .end L of the cam slot L, as plainly indicated in Fig. 6, and while the wrist pin K is v in this position the rock arm K holds the arm H nut H, arm H and stylus G in the position shown in Fig. 4, that is, with the stylus G out of contact with the record sheet F. When the bolt C is shot out into engagement with the keeper C to lock the door A in closed position then the cam plate L moving with the bolt G causes the wrist pin K to travel in the curved portion L of the cam slot L whereby a rocking movement is given to the rock arm K to swing the arm H nut H, arm H and stylus G into the position shown in Fig. 5, to move the stylus in contact with the record sheet .F at the same time swinging the stylus G to the rightagainst the tension of its s ring G on the arm H to cause the stylus to make a verticalline F on the record sheet F (see Fig. 3). iWhen the wrist pin K finally passes through the portion L of the cam slot L then a return movement is given to the st lus G a distance about half way. of the en of the movement previously made for the line F, to mark a line F on the record sheet F. When the pin K finally'reaches the end L of the slot at the time thebolt C is com-- letely shot out'into engagement with the keeper C then the stylus G remains in contact with the record sheet F and as thelatter is rotated with the drum D a line F is made on the record sheet at approximately right angles to the closing lines F, F" previously mentioned. When the bolt 0 is retracted then the plate cam L imparts move When the pin K reaches the portion L of the slot L then the stylus G is again out of engagement with the record sheet F, and during the time the bolt is in retracted position no line is marked on the record sheet I F, but when the bolt is again moved into closed position then another 'setof lines F, F only in reverse direction, are marked on the record sheet F. Thus the empty space between the line F and the next closing line F indicates the length of time which elapses during the time the bolt was in retracted position. i
Presuming that a person surreptitiously opens the bolt C to gain entrance to the room to which the door A leads, then opening lines F", F are marked on the record sheet F at the correct time, and even if the erson is aware of the arrangement and 1mmediately shoots out the bolt C after the door A is opened, then another set of closing lines are marked on the sheet. the person leaves the room and in quick'succession moves the bolt Cinto open position, closes the door and then shoots out the bolt C then another set of opening and'closinglines F, F and F, F are marked on the is again closed-the closing lines F", are
marked on the sheet with ablank space intervening between the said sets of lines, thus indicating the length of time the person had been in the room. From the foregoing it will be seen that in either case the record made by the stylus G on the record sheet F.

As the stylus G only resses lines on the record sheet F it is evi' ent that thelatter is not/liable to be torn or mutilated.
The time recorder for looks shown and described is comparatively simple in construction and is not liable to get out of order.
When i Having thus described my invention,- I nation of arecord sheet, means to cause the claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a time recorder for locks, the combination of a locking device,a clock-driven drum rovided with a record sheet, a stylus movably mounted adjacent the said drum and adapted to move in and out ofcontact with the said record sheet, and actuating means 10 connecting a movable member of the said locking device withthe said stylus to move the latter into and out of contact with the said record sheet and to move the stylus at an angle to the direction of the travel of the record sheet and while in contact with the record sheet the said actuating means having devices for holding said stylus in contact with the record sheet to mark a line thereon during the time the locking device is in closed position, the stylus being held out of contact with the record sheet during the time the locking device is open and the stylus making a cross check mark on each end of the line marked on the record sheet on opening or closing the locking device.
2. In a time recorder for looks, the combination of a locking device, a clock-driven drum provided with a'record sheet, a stylus movably mounted adjacent the said drum i and adapted to move in and out of contact with the said record sheet, and actuating means connecting a movable member of the said locking device with the said stylus ,to move the latter into and out of contact with the said record sheet and to impart a comound bodily movement to the said stylus while in contact with the said record sheet, the said actuating means having devices for holding said stylus in contact with the rec- 0rd sheet to mark a line thereon during the time the locking device is in closed position, the stylus being held out of contact with the record sheet during the time the locking device is open-and the stylus making a cross check mark on each end of the line marked on the record sheet on opening or closing the locking device.
3. In a time recorder for looks, the combination of a locking device having a bolt,'a
clock-driven drum provided witharecord sheet, a screw rod driven from the said drum and extending parallel thereto, a nut screwing on the said screw rod and provided with an arm, a spring-pressed stylus adapted to mark on the said record sheet and'pivoted on the said nut to swing obliquely relative to the face of the said record sheet, a rock arm enga ing the said nut arm and provided wit a crank arm and a plate cam moving with the said bolt and provided with a camslot engaged by the wrist pin of the said crank arm.
4. In a time recorder for looks, the combiadapted to indicate on the said record sheet, a locking device, and means connecting the said locking device with the said stylus -to move the latter into engagement with the record sheet on closing the locking device and to mark closing lines onto the record sheet at an angle to the direction of travel of the record sheet, and to mark a time line on the record sheet in the direction of the travel of the record sheet, the said stylus on opening the locking device marking 'a. set of opening lines on the said record sheet at an angle to the direction of the travel of the record sheet and to move the stylus out of contactwith the record sheet, so

The combination of a lockingdevice and a time recorder controlled by a movable member of the locking device, the said time recorder including a clock-driven drum provided with a record sheet, and a stylus 5 adapted to move into and out'of engagement with the said record sheet on moving the said movable member, the said actuating means having devices for holding said stylus in contact with the record sheet to mark a line thereon during the time the locking device is in closed position, the stylus being held out of contact with the record sheet during the time the locking device is open and the stylus making a cross check mark on each end of the line marked on the record sheet on opening or closing the locking device.
6. In combination, a locking device having a bolt, a cam .on the bolt, a clock-driven drum provided with a record sheet, aspringpressed stylus adapted to mark on the said record sheet, the said stylus being pivoted to swing obliquely relative to the face of the said record sheet, and actuating means con- 105 necting the said stylus with the said cam to move the said stylus into and out of contact with the said record sheeton moving the boltinto closed or open position, said ing said stylus in contact with the record sheet to mark a line thereon during the time the locking device is in closed position, the stylus being held out of contact with the record sheet during the time the locking de- 115 vice is open and the stylus making a cross check mark on each end of the line marked on the record sheet on opening or closing the locking device.
