To all whom it may concern lle it known that l, Ennis Mien), of Passaic, New Jersey, have invented certain improvements in Holders for Curtains and the like, 011 wt eh the following description, in connection with the accompanying drawlugs, is a specification, like numerals on the drawings designating like parts.

This invention relates to holding devices, and is of particular utility when embodied in a holder for securing rolling window or curtain shades in place upon the rollers eoimnonly used for their support, but l. con template the use of my improvements in any held for which they are adapted by their nature,

in important object of my invention is to i prtwide a holder of simple construction which can be readily applied to enistmg window-shado-rollers and similar curtains u that expression in a broad sense and without any limited teihnical signification, substantially without alteration in the structure of the roller, and without the necessity for the use of special tools or for the services ot' a skilled workman, my improved holder being; of such a character that it may be readily applied by anyone capable of performing ordinary household duties, and a notable leature being that by my improved device the use of tacks is eliminated, and of any other fastening means tending to puncture or otherwise mar the material of the curtain.

Another important object oi my invention is to provide a holder of such a character that by duplicating it provision may be made for the retention in place of shades and similar articles of unusual length the plurality of holders thus used cooperating without the necessity for special connective arrangements.

iiccordingly, in its preferred form, my improved holder comprises a substantiallly cylindrical member of spring material, such as spring steel, brass, copper, paper, alu minum, tin, wood, iron or hard rubber, slit along one edge to permit the holder to be spread manually for emplacement upon the device to which the material is to be law tened, such as a windowshaderoller, the slit permitting also the passage ot' the curtain material, the end of which is ordinarily given one or more turns upon the roller before the holder is slipped ove the same. A valuable feature of such a holder so constructed, that the curtain material may be rolled a plurality of limes around the roller bel'ore the shade is placed there upon, so that without cutting; the material of the window shade it may be adapted to windows of dill'erent lengths.

My improved holder is provided preterably, substantially throughout its superficial area, with longitudinal corrugations, to yield the maximum holding el'liciency, by pr mg the curtain material against the roller at a number oi attenuated regions of contact.

The various features of my invention will be illustrated and described ili'ully in the accompanying drawings and specification and pointed out in the claim.

in the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description to enable ready and complete uiulerstanding of my iim'irovements, the part designated by the rcit'erenec numeral 1 is a holder, which may be used con veniently for attaching curtains or window shades to their rollers, oi which one is shown by way of example at 2 in Fig. 13, the numeral designating the material of the shade proper, which latter, with the roller, may be of any suitable construction, and are herein shown as each of a well l-rnown type, the roller 2 being ot wood with the usual metal end pivots 4:, and the shade 3 may be considered to be of linen.

The material and contour of the holder may be of any suitable character to carry out the purposes of my invention. As one ecmvenienl material and :l'orni o'l construction, I have shown the hold r as comprising a substantially cylindrical member of spring n etal, such as steel, having preferably a longitudinal opening or slit 5 which permits the lips 6 of the holder to be separated readily for the introduction of the roller 2, and preferably the material of the holder is cut away or flared ateach end as shown by way of example at 7 to facilitate the emplacement of the holder upon the roller 2. Such emplacement may be accomplished in any con-- venient manner, as for example that shown in Fig. 2, in which the shade material 3 is shown as wrapped around the roller for substantially one turn or layer, with the shade-forming portion of the material extending out through the slit The operation is completed by sliding the member 1 along from the position shown in Fig. 2 until it clears the end pivot 4:, leaving the latter projecting in position to be seated in the usual bearing socket (not shown), the shade operating upon its roller preferably in the manner of shades in common use at the present day, and no alteration in the structure of the roller or socket being required to permit the use of the holder shown by way of example and heretofore described.

The holder 10 shown in Fig. a is of substantially the same construction as that shown in F igs. 1 to 3 inclusive, but is somewhat'longer, being substantially co-extensive in length with the roller 12, of usual construction, having end pivots 14 and 114:, and I have shown the material of the shade 13 as wrapped more than once around the roller 12; an operation which can be performed conveniently by turning the holder 10 in the direction of the arrows.

It will readily be seen that by turning the holder 10 relatively to the roller 12 and winding or unwinding the material 13 of the shade, the length of the projecting portion of the shade in vy be varied and regu lated to suit the length of different windows.

The width of the slits 5 and 15 may be i varied to suit the exigencies of particular installatlons, and the diameter of the holder may be changed by bending the holder, if

sutlicient force be applied, to open the slit wider or close it somewhat, to adapt the holder to rollers of different diameters, thus rendering the holder a device of universal application.

In accordance with an important feature of my invention, my improved holder is provided, substantially throughout its superficial area, with longitudinal corrugations, as shown in each of the figures, to yield the maximum holding eliiciency, by pressing the curtain material against the roller at a number of attenuated'regions of contact.

Having illustrated and described my invention thus fully, and suitable means by which the same may be put into practice, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to the specific materials and construction shown and described by way of example, nor in general do I limit myseltotherwise than as set forth in the claim read in connection with'this specification.

hat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent ofthe United States of America is A holder for articles of the class described, such as curtain rollers; said holder comprising a substantially annular member of resilient material to be seated upon said roller, embracing the curtain material, said holder having an opening to pass said material and being corrugated longitudinally throughout its superficies to form attenuated salient rib portions, crowding said material into'frictional engagement with said roller; substantially as described.
