The said movement of the lever, transmitted through the shaft 8 and the levers 9, 1O counteracts the springs 11. An abutment or catching device is provided for the lever 12, formed by one 15 of the arms of a two armed lever, which is pivoted to the side piece 5 and the other arm 16 of which during the movement of the transporter is acted upon by an abutment, located in its path, which abutment is provided on the platen and consists of a lever 17 or the like, which is adjustable, so that its action can be suspended, if wanted. The position of the lever 17 is controlled by means of a screw 18, against which the lever is forced by a spring 19. The lever 12 is provided on its inner side with a projection or shoulder 20 coiiperating with the lever 15, 16, so that the lever 12 occupies different positions, according as the lever 15, 16 is swung to the position, in which the lever 12 bears against the arm 15 by means of the said shoulder, or is swung out of the said position, so that the action of the lever 12 (spring 14) on the springs 11 is suspended or not suspended respectively.
In Figs. 5 and 6, which show the movable jaw 9, 10 of one of the grippers, a thin plate spring 21 is illustrated, which is fixed to the jaw 9, 10 and, as the said jaw is swung from the stationary jaw 7 for a short distance, still is forced against the jaw 7 with a slight pressure, suitably adapted for the holding of a thin paper sheet. On the platen a roller 22 or the like is provided. As the transporter passes the said roller 22 during its return movement toward the feed table, the roller 22 acts upon the top or rear end of the lever 12 and swings the lever in such direction, that the lever 15, 16, acted upon by a spring 28, will occupy the position shown in Fig. 2 and bear against the shoulder 20. When the lever 12 has been arrested in the said manner, the springs 11 are no longer counteracted by the spring 14. On the one end of the shaft 8 there is an arm, provided with a projection, which slides over a projection provided on an arm pivoted to the frame of the machine, as the grippers arrive to the raised edge of the sheet, so that the shaft is rotated and the grippers are opened for a moment. During .the continued movement the edge of the sheet enters the grippers, which are then closed. As the transporter is again moved forward and upward, the said projection of the transporter passes under the projection of the arm pivoted to the frame, so that the said arm is raised and the grippers remain closed. The said device, though in a differ ent form, is well known before. If now, when the transporter is moved upward, the lever 17 has been brought into such position, that it does not act upon the lever 15, 16, passing the same, no shifting of the latter is effected and the paper sheet is delivered to the platen without any reduction of the gripper pressure. The mechanism acts in this manner, while ordinary stiff paper is printed. If on the other hand thin paper is used, the lever 17 is so shifted, that the lever 15, 16, passing the same, is swung in the direction indicated by the arrow in Fig. 2, so that it leaves the shoulder 20 and permits the spring 14: to counteract the springs 11. Owing to this fact the gripper pressure is reduced to the pressure exerted by the springs 21 and consequently the paper sheet is drawn very easily from the transporter by the gripping device provided on the platen. The moment, in which the great gripper pressure is suspended, is
regulated by bringing the lever 17 into dif ferent angular positions.
Two piles of paper sheets may be put into the machine and two sheets located abreast may be printed. For adjusting the gripper pressure to the paper sheets respectively the shaft 8 is divided at its center into two parts. The said parts are provided at the adjacent ends with arms 25 and 26 respectively, Figs. 7 and 8, which arms are connected by a jaw nut 27 or the like in such manner, that the arms and the parts of the shaft can be rotated with relation to each other, after the said screw has been untightened. The arms are then again connected by tightening the screw. Consequently, the parts 25 to 27 inclusive form a clutch of special type. Owing to the said arrangement the gripper pressure can be adapted for thick paper sheets, forming one of the piles, and for thin paper sheets forming the other pile by so adjusting the parts of the shaft, with relation to which the jaws of the grippers are rotatable for some distance (as stated above at the description of the screw 8*) that, if the mechanism described above acts at one of the piles formed by thin paper sheets, the pressure of the grippers at the other part of the shaft is sufficient for the thick paper sheets forming the other pile. Consequently, by the arrangement described above gripper jaws 9, 10 and springs 11 respectively of such a stiffness may be used, that no slackness or defectiveness of any of the same is to be feared, all unsafeness concerning the durability of the mechanism be ing thus removed, which hardly would be the case, if the jaws proper of the grippers were rendered very yielding or very weak springs 11 were used.
The mechanism for effecting the described unloading may easily be modified. The in vention may be applied also to folding machines, ruling machines and other similar machines.
Having now described our invention, what we claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In automatic platen printing presses and similar machines the combination with the transporter, grippers provided on the said transporter for the seizing of the paper sheets, the spring (11) for holding the grippers in closed position, and the shaft actuating one of the jaws of the said grippers, of a lever arm (12) provided on the said shaft, a catching device for the said arm, a spring (14;) acting upon the said arm in such direction, that the action of the spring (11) is counteracted, if the said lever arm has been disengaged, as the paper sheet is to be delivered to the platen, and blade springs (21) having tensions less than the aforesaid spring 11 and arranged to be thrown into position by the spring 11 to act upon the paper sheet and, as the said disengagement has been effected, hold the sheet with slight pressure, substantially as described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
2. In automatic platen printing presses and similar machines the combination with the transporter, grippers provided on the said transporter for the seizing of the paper sheets, the spring 11) for holding the grippers in closed position, and the shaft actuating one of the jaws of the said grippers of a lever arm (12) provided on the said shaft, a catching lever arm (15, 16) pivoted to the said transporter, a spring (28) tending to move the said lever arm (15, 16) into position to catch the lever arm (12), an adjustable abutment (17) which is provided on the platen and can be located in the path of the said lever arm (15), 16) for disengaging the same, a spring (1 1) acting upon the lever arm (12) in such direction, that the action of the spring 11) is counteracted, if the lever arm (15, 16) has been disengaged, as the paper sheet is to be delivered to the platen, and blade springs (21) having tensions less than the aforesaid spring 11 and arranged to be thrown into position by the spring 11 to act upon the paper sheet and as the said disengagement has been effected hold the sheet with a slight pressure, substantially as described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
3. In automatic platen printing presses the combination with the transporter, grippers provided on the said transporter for the seizing of the paper sheets, the spring (11) for holding the grippers in closed position, and the shaft actuating one of the jaws of the said grippers, of a lever arm (12) provided on the said shaft, a catching device for the said arm, a spring (1 1) acting upon the said arm in such direction, that the action of the spring (11) is counteracted if the said lever arm has been disengaged, as the paper is to be delivered to the platen, and an abutment which is located in the path of the lever arm (12) and removes the said lever arm into its arrested position, as the transporter is moved to the feed table, and blade springs (21) having tensions less than the aforesaid spring 11 and arranged to be thrown into position by the spring 11 to act upon the paper sheet and, as the said. disengagement has been effected, hold the sheet with slight pressure, substantially as de scribed and shown in the accompanying drawings.

In automatic platen printing presses the combination with the transporter, grippers provided. on the said transporter for the seizing of the paper sheets, the spring (11) for holding the grippers in closed position, and the shaft actuating one of the jaws of the said grippers, of a lever arm (12) provided on the said shaft, a catching device for the said arm, a spring acting upon the said arm in such direction, that the action of the spring (11) is counteracted, if the said lever arm has been disengaged, as the paper sheet is to be delivered to the platen, the said shaft being divided transversely into two parts, rotatable with relation to each other and each carrying a set of grippers, means for connecting the said parts, and blade springs (21) having tensions less than the aforesaid spring 11 and arranged to be thrown into position by the spring 11 to act upon the paper sheet and, as the said disengagement has been effected, hold the sheet with slight pressure, substantially as described and shown in the accompanying drawings.
