ll llh telilfl Application filed February 15, 913. Serial It's.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PIERRE Dnssoo'rros, a citizen. of the French Republic, residing at Lyon, in France, have invented certain" new and useful Improvements in Valve-Actuating Mechanism for lnternal-Combustion Engines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in valve actuating mechanism for internal combustion engines.
The use of a cylindrical valve member concentric with the cylinder and having a movemcnt'the trajectory of which is practically circular or elliptic, is known in valve mechanism for internal combustion engines. The said movement which is obtained. by the combination of a longitudinal reciproeating movement with a simultaneous pan tial reciprocating rotary movement hitherto only been. effected by means of conplicated mechanical devices.
The present invention has foi' its object simple mechanism by means of which the cylindrical valve member is given the necessary movement.
An example of Construction of the mechanism for operating the distribution valve for a four stroke cycle motor is illustrated in the annexed drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical section of the motor. F ig. 2 is a diagram illustrating the move ment of the valve. Fig. 3 is a section on line A-A of Fig. 1 showing in plan and on larger scale the actuating mechanism of the valve.
The valve 1 arranged between the cylinder and the piston is of a known type and of which as shown in F ig. 2 the orifices 2 and 3 successively uncover ports l and 5 made in the cylinder wall and respectively serving for the intake and the exhaust. The valve 1 moves over an elliptical tra ectory 6 gencrated in the followinc" manner: A. shaft 7 preferably arranged parallel to the motor shaft 8 rotates at a relative speed which depends on the type of motor; in the example shown the said shaft 'irotatesat half the speed of the shaft 8. The shaft 7 is provided opposite each cylinder with a crank 9 the diameter a of the throw of which. is equal to the vertical stroke of the valve 1.
On. the crank 9 is mounted a perforated block 10 carried by a vertical trunnion 11 which pivots in a sleeve 12 connected to the lower part of valv l by an arm 13 arranged at a mean angle of about 45 with regard to the axis of the crank 9. The valve is thus united with the crank t, and its movement must consequently coincide with the vertical movement of the crank but by res-- son of the obliquen'ess of the arm 11- with respect to the crank 9, the trunnion 11, the distance of which from the center of valve is constant, is forced to execute an angular displacement of an. amplitude b as shown in. Fig. 3 which corresponds to a linear displacement on the outer surface valve l. The latter thus simul aneou submitted to two movements; the cal of an amplitude a, the secono l an amplitude c. The comhinat o two movements gives a result practically taking the form. of an having as axes the distances and c. 1/ construction this device only requires that the trunnion of the crank 9 has suliic 1" length to allow the block 10 to move over the distance (Z which corresponds to the angular distance mentioned. This arragement allows of easily determining the movement of the valve for each of the cylinders and the parts are simple and easily manufactured. When the motor has a plurality of cylinders, the shaft '7 is provided with as many cranks 9 as there are cylinders these cranks being arranged at angles suitable for the various cylinders.
.lt is well understood that the described method of actuating the valve apolicable J to all kinds of two or four zle motors the frequency at which tion ports should be uncovered I being taken into account which tained by varying i he relation of rcsoeo tire speeds of the motor a shaft which actuates the valve.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States is Valve. actuating mechanism for internal combustion engines comprising in combination a cylindrical valve member, an arm rigidly fixed thereto, a shaft adapted to he rotated by the engine, a crank on said shaft, a perforated block mounted on said crank and movable thereon, a trunnion connected to said block, and a sleeve fixed to said arm and mounted onsaid trunnion the saidarm being arranged obliquely to said crank and ito the plane of rotatlon thereof.
In witness whereof I have signed this specification in the presence of two w1tnesses.
