Description

tibo-it ttte HUGO SOHULTZ, OF PARIS, FRANCE.
Letters Patent No. 109,947, dated December 6, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN SKIRTS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the same.
To all whom it may concern :V
Beit known that I, HUGO SCHULTZ, of Parisfin the Empire of France., have invented a new and improved Ladies Skirt; and I do hereby deciarefthat the following is a full, clear,` and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specilication, in which.-
Figure l is a side view, and
Figure 2 a back view of' my improved skirt.
'lhe object of this invention is to be able to replace the old skirt or crinoline by a n ovel kind and form by which I do away with aiifits inconveniences and augnient considerably its advantages.
My novel system, disposition, or form is composed in the first piace of a band or spring, a, of metal or any other' suitable substance, covered with cloth or any other appropriate stuff, and which, start-ing from a point, a', describes the figure represented by the arrows and terminates at the point a", as is clearly represented in the drawing in lig. 1.
lhis band `or strip a, which forms the basis or I fbundation of my skirt, and which can be increased,
diminished, or modilied in shape, and which alone oi'ers the necessary resistance for supporting the dress, is disposed so as to let all-the front open, and is maintained orkept in its position by another metallic or otherband, b, to which it is aflixed by a few stitches, at the parts b and lo". v l l eis a third metallic band, disposed horizontally and attached to e at c and c, heilig open in front like this latter. g
This band, covered with any kind ot stuff, serves as a waist-bami, in order to tix the skirt around the body, its extremities being with that view furnishedl with tongue-pieces, d d.
c is a tape, which, starting from the center of the band c, is carried down to the bottom of band .and at c ol this tape are al'lixed two other tapes, j' and f', y whielr are made to unite, as is clearly seen in iig. 2, with the band a at each side ofthe said tape e.
These three tapes serve' to maintain in -place a series o fljslight horizontal springs, g g' g, which are united at g y g', to the main band a, as is represented, the two upperorsuperior springs being 'moreover reinforced by two other springs, h lz, which are each of them composed of two sliding pieces sliding one on theother `by means of the 4.slides h h', and thus any adjustment wished iorcan be given, io the skirt.
'i fi i are small Asprings employed fto give a graceful form to the topl part ofthe skirt, and to this end they are united by eyelets fi at regular distances, to
. the band b.
j is a tape, iliade adjustable by means of a buckle,
and serving to unite the two sides of the metallic l band b, which it thus adjusts against the back of the wearer, while L' is a second tape, equnii y fnrnishedwith a buckle,v
which is employed to unite together thetwo front parts ot' the band a, either in front or behind the wearer, as'inay be deemed most convenient.
It will be observed that by means of this improved system or disposition ot the parts I obtain not only an article extremely light, hut one which, while it sustains and gives grace to the dress does not in the least impede the movements of the wearer' while walking, and permits of her sitting down with the greatest easeand facility.
Although I harctdescribcd and represented my inproved system as applied to an open skirt, I do not in any way intend to limit myself to this kind of garment, as itis clear that I can cover the same with any kind ot stuli', either cotton, silk, wool, Svc.
What I claim asjrny invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is*
1. A crinoiine-skirt, based upon the form or frame made by the metallic wire or band a, disposed as de,- scribed.
2. In combination with the bami a", the bands b j, and 'i Ii t', for adjusting the set ot' the erinoiine-skirt,` as described.
HUGO SOHULTZ.
