The Schedule referred tom these Letters Patent and rushing part of the same. I
` county of Delaware, State of Pennsylvania, have in#s vented certain Improvements in Marine Engines; and
vI do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, .and exact descn'ptlon of thesame.
Myiuvent'icu relates to improvements in marine condensing steau1-engines, and Vmy improvements,
which are fully described hereafter, consistfmoreespecially, of such a-dispositionof thc air-pump and condenser as results inthe. ccououfiizng.; ot' space and in general simplicity ol construction.v
1n order to enable others skilled in machinery ol' this class to make and apply my invention, Iwill now proeced to describe its construct-ion and operation, reference being had to the accompanying drawing which forms a part of this specification, and in which- Figure 1 is a -iiont view ot' suficlent of' a marine engine to illustrate my improvements;
' Figure 2, a side view looking in thedireetien of the ,u rrow, iig. 1.; and
Figure 3, a section ot' the feedpump and part of Similar letters refer several views. A and A represent the tiamesor standards of the. engine, to the top of which are Vsecured. thecylinder, rallies, and other appliances which it has not been to similar. parts throughout the' -.deemed necessary to'illustrate and deserihe,inasmuch las they'may be of thc usual construction.
iB is the propellershaft, turning in suitable bearings' and extending through 'the stern of the vessel, where it' is furnished with the usual propeller, the inner end of the shaft having the crank "a, which v-is embraced by the. lower end. of the usual connecting-rod, and
-this pin projects into a second cmnk, Dmn a short .supplementary shalt, E, which'can'ies the usual number of-.ececnt1ics, namely, two for operating the link ot' .the main valve, and one for operating the cut-oit' One only of these eccentrlcs, marked F, is shown in the drawing, g. 1.

For the same reason the usual 'valves connected to the bilge-pump, feed-puinp`, and discharge-pipe havebeeiroiiiittecl. t
It willsutlice to remark, as regards the operation 'of' the above-mentioned parts, that the exhaust steam passes directly through the pipe K tof the condenser J'. and that the condensed'water is forced by the airenmp through the pipe L into theses. A Since the introduction of marine engineering, ativntien has been especially'direotcd to-the' disposaie-t tlu: .wir-pump and condenser, themain obstacles to con tend against by designers of marine condeiisingfenglues being the space..cceupiedbythcse nece ssaryad- Quncts, andthe imparting of the necessary motion to the air-pinnp bucket without complex and costly mechanism. l In 'carrying outpmyfinventiou I. have held especially in View the econoxnizing bothof space and mechanism, and, as a starting paint, 'I have' l adopted a style ot engine such as is commonly used on high-pressure propeller-boats,tl1at is, 'a vertical engine with cylinder, valves', 85o., supported on :iframe-work, and diiecil y above and in line with the propeller-shaft; engines .of this-class being well known for their ecor.` oiny as regards construction. I
In applying an air-pump' to this vengine llhave arranged the said pump iorizontully, or, if desired, it
Thc'fsupplementary vshaft E, 4while .carrying the necessary ecccntrics, servcs,throngh the simple devices of a crank, connecting-'rud,and guided cross# head, to yimpart the desired' reciprocating .motion to the air-pump bucket. Independently of -thls ccouo1n air-pump itself is so situated that the space which it occupies is immaterial.
Inrespect to the condenser J, it will be seen, on reference to fig. 2, that t'is ot' such a length as to'be of the latter.
Qn reference to iig. 3 it will be` observed that the 'as not to interferewiththe bucket ofthe same, while the rod It ot' the feed-pump .bucket i sa continuation pump bucket.- By this, arrangement a feed-pump, projecting into space available for the storage of coal, '85s., is avoided, while no other mecl-iauism is required "simplccontinnatlon ot'..thc 4red of the air-pump.
