A sprocket chain 15 is trained around the sprocket wheels 13 and l-l and is adapted totransmit rotary movement from the shaft at to the shaft 12. A disk 16 is fixed to the forward end of the shaft 12 at a point in advance of thearm 9 and is provided with'an eccent-rically positioned wrist pin 17. A bracket 18 is fixed to the outer end portion of the arm 9 and an inner shoe 19 is pivoted to the outer portion of the arm 9 and the bracket 18. i A
cutter bar 20 is fixed at its inner end to the shoe l9 and carries at its outer end a slice 21. Guard fingers 22 are mounted at the forward edge of the cutter bar 20, and a knife bar 23 is mounted for reciprocatory movement along the forward edge of the out ter bar 20 and through the rear portions of the guard fingers in. the usual manner. pitinan flat is pivotally connected at its inner end to the wrist pin 17 and is pivotally connected at its outer end with the inner end portion of the knife bur 23. 'lherefore it will be seen that as the shaft 12 rotates, the pin 17 will reciprocate the pitnnln 24 which in turn reciprocates the knife bar 23.
A lifting arin is mounted upon the platform of the car 2 in the vicinity of the forward end thereof andv at the side edge thereof. The said arm is upwardly and outwardly inclined with relation to the platform of the car. A standard 26 is mounted upon the platform of the car 2 in the vicinity of the edge thereof opposite that edge at which the arm is mounted. The standard 26 carries winding drums 27 and 28. Any suitable means may be provided for rotating the drums 27 and 28 and for holding the same against rotation.

A cable 32 is arranged to wind upon] the drum 28 and is trained over the .pulley 30. The outer end of the cable 32 is connected with the shoe 21. Therefore it may be accomplished while the apparatus isin operation or at rest. 'By winding the cable 31 upon the drum 27 the shoe 19 will beraised and the arms 9 and 10 will swing upon their pivotal connections with the brackets 8; Therefore the inner portion of the cutting apparatus may be raised while the said apparatus is in operation or at rest.
By winding both cables 31 and 32 upon the drums 27 and 28 the entire cutting apparatus may be raised without changing the disposition of the cutting apparatus with relation to a horizontal. This .adjustmentmay also beg-accomplished while the apparatus 1s working or at rest.
- Therefore it will be seen that a simple and an effectivemower attachment is provided fora car and that the parts are susceptible of adjustment and movement to enable the apparatus to operate at the side of a track presence of irrespective of the inclination of the. adjacent banks, and also the cutting apparatus may be moved to clear obstructions at the side of the track-as the car moves along the same.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed. as new is: p An apparatus ofthe character described including a wheeled support, a hanger arm pivotally connected to the support at one side edge thereof an arm member rigidly secured to the support and extending upwardly and outwardly beyond that edge thereof to which the hanger arm is connected, pulley wheels journaled at the upper terminal of the second-mentioned arm memher, a cutting'apparatus pivotally connected to the outer terminal of the hanger arm,
operating means for the cutting apparatus, a pair 0 cables one of which is secured to the inner end of the cutting apparatus and the other of which is secured to the outer end-of the cutting'apparatus, said cables being directed through the pulleys of the second-mentioned arm member, and independent operating means mounted on the support for each of the cables, and outer ends ofthe cutting apparatus may be independently raised or lowered.
