PIERRE SMAL, OF BRUSSELS, BELGIUM.
FOUR-CYLINDER COMPOUND LOCOIVEOTIVE-ENGINE.
nascose.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, Pinnen SMAL, a subject of the King of Belgium, and a resident of Brussels, Belgium, have invented cert-ain new and useful Improvements in FounGylinder Compound Locomotive Engines, of which the following is a specification.
The object of this invent-ion is to provide a steam engine of the character set forth, in which the crank shafts of the respective cylinders are set to provide the greatest advantages of operation.
A further object of this invention is to` provide an engine of the class described, which shall employ a minimum number of valves for the steam distribution.
"With these and other objects in view, this invention consists in the peculiar combination and arrangement of the parts of a four cylinder compound locomotive engine as hereinafter described and more particularly setforth in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings, wherein similar reference numerals indicate similar parts wherever used: Figure 1 is a longitudinal diagrammatic section of two of the cylinders o-f an engine constructed according 'to the invention. Fig. 2 is a cross section of a four cylinder compound locomotive engine, embodying this invention.
The numerals 1 and 2 designate cylinders of any approved construction, having within them pistons 7 and 8, carrying piston rods 9 and 10 which are attached to a crank shaft 16 at an angle of 180 degrees.
The cylinder l, is provided with a steam distributing valve comprising two slides 5 and 6, carried by a rod 11, operated by means of an eccentric 17. The steam from the boiler enters the chambers 18 and 19 by means of the supply pipes 12 and 13, and is admitted alternately by means of the valve slides 5 and 6 to the admission ducts 14 and 15.
The steam admitted by the duct lei. acts upon the left face of the piston 7, causing it to move toward the right. At the same time the steam within the cylinder 1, flows through the duct 3, into the cylinder 2 to the right face of the piston 8, causing it to move to the left.
' lhe exhaust steam from the cylinder 2 Specification of Letters Patent.

Patented June 2, 1914. Serial No. 708,223.
flows at the end of the stroke upwardly as shown by the arrowsin Fig. 1, through the duct a into the cylinder 1, and together with the exhaust from that cylinder, flows through the passage 15 toward the exhaust shoulder 111, and through the exhaust pipe 18, as shown by arrows.
Fig. 2 shows a cross section of the invention.
The cylinders are shown at 20, 21, 22 and 23. Cylinders 20 and 21 are connected by crosswise independent ducts 24 and corresponding to the ducts 3 and 4; of Figyl, and cylinders 22 and 23, and connected in a like manner by ducts 26 and 27. Steam is admitted to cylinder 21 by means of the intake pipe 30, the admission being controlled by means of a valve 28, operating as eX- plained in connection with Fig. 1. Steam for cylinder 22 is admitted through intake pipe 31 and is controlled by valve 29. From the cylinder 21, the steam is supplied to cylinder 2O and from the cylinder 22 to the cylinder 23, as from 1 to in Fig. 1. An eX- haust manifold 32 is used for both exhausts. The operation of the device is the same as in Fig. 1.
TWhat l. claim as new is:
In combination, a pair ofcylinders, pisu tons operating in the cylinders, a crank shaft, connections between the pistons and crank shaft, a valve chamber adjacent one cylinder, two connected spaced apart reciprocating valves operating in the valve chamber, an eccentric on the crank shaft, a connection between the eccentric and the valves, there being two ports between the valve chamber and the adjacent cylinder, there being two ports forming communicationI between the two cylinders, each of the latter ports communicating with one end of one cylinder and the opposite end of the adjacent cylinder. whereby when the valve is moved to the left, steam will pass through one of the ports leading from the valve chamber to the adjacent cylinder and behind the piston in the latter, and through one of the ports between the cylinders to the front of the companion piston, and the lirst mentioned piston will exhaust steam from the front of same and into the valve chamber, and simultaneously therewith the sec ond mentioned piston Will exhaust steam In testimony whereof I have hereunto set lgehnd salme tlrfugh thle compnon1 port my hand in presence of two Witnesses.
