Definitions

  • This invention relates to tracking or sheet guiding devices for automatic player instruments, such as automatic pianos, and it more particularly relates to improved pneumatic mechanism for controlling the movement of sheets or. webs, such for instance as perforated music sheets, the object of the invention being to provide an improved mechanism of this character simple in its construction and positive in its action, and by means of which the music sheet will be automatically maintained in its proper position so that the perforations of the music sheet will properly coincide or track with the corresponding perforations or apertures of the tracker board during the playing of the instrument, and which mechanism may also be readily adjusted to correspond with different widths of music sheets, one of the objects of the present improvement being to provide a pair of juxtaposed adjustable ports controlled by a single valve located between such ports and so organized that the adjustment of one port will correspondingly adjust the companion port, while one port may be adjusted independently of the other, and in which mechanism the organization and construction is such that the single valve lever may be much lighter and more sensitive than is possible with usual mechanisms of this kind.
  • a further object of the invention is the provision of an improved sheet guiding device which may be readily accessible to the operator, but which at the same time cannot be knocked out of adjusted position accidentally, and in which by means of the provision of a pair of adjustable ports adjust able simultaneously and yet controlled by a single movable valve, one part of which is adapted to be engaged by the edge of the music sheet, increased scope of movement is obtainable.
  • the present mechanism is so organized and constructed that should the edge of the music sheet opposite to the valve-controlled Specification of Letters Patent.
  • ports be mutilated the operation of the mechanism will not be interfered with, in other words where ports are provided at each end of the tracker bar for engagement by the traveling web, or where valve-controlled levers are located at each side of the music sheet to be engaged thereby, it follows that if one edge of the sheet is torn or mutilated the mechanism will be operated prematurely at times, although the per foratio-ns therein may be in perfect registration with the tracker board perforations, and the sheet so be thrown out of register. In the present mechanism, however, it is not necessary that both edges of the sheet be in perfect condition.
  • Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved mechanism as the same may be applied to a pianoforte, the usual mechanism for rotating the music sheet rolls being omitted as this is well known;
  • Fig. 2 is a plan view of the adjustable ports and the valve lever for controlling the same, the figure being intended to show the position of the valve while the machine is being played, in other words when the sheet is in position across the tracker bar and pumping is proceeding, in which position the valve is in a leaking or bleeding condition;
  • Fig. 3 is a front view of the sheet guiding device shown in Fig. 2;
  • Fig. 4 is a rear view of the double pneumatic shown.
  • the present improvement is particularly adapted for self-playing instruments, and in the present embodiment thereof it is shown constructed for that purpose.
  • the music rolls are preferably carried by a suitable casing or boX 2 of any desired construction.
  • the music roll 8 carrying the record or sheet which is to travel over the perforated tracker bar or board 5 is located between a pair of bearing members 6 and 7 carried at opposite ends of the casing.
  • the bearing member 6, fixedly secured at one side of the casing includes the usual spring plunger having a socket for the reception of one end of the shaft of the music roll 3.
  • the bearing member 7 rojects through the opposite side of the casing and is slidably movable therein, the outer end being adapted to be engaged by a groove in a suitable cam 8 carried on an upright shaft 9 having a crank 10 connected by adjustable telescopic rods 11 with an arm 12 of the double pneumatic 13.
  • the take-up roll 14 is suitably supported at the opposite side of the tracker board or bar, these two rolls being operated by suitable driving mechanism.
  • the tracking device comprises a pair of ports 15 and 16, the port 15 being carried by a lever 17, while the port 16 is carried by a lever 18, and both of these levers are pivotally connected as at 19 and 20 respectively to a bar or bracket 21 having an upright arm 22 in position to be secured to the side wall 23 of the casing 2, and in such position that the forward end of the port lever 17 which is provided with a depending portion 42 may project below the tracker-board for the purpose hereinafter stated.
  • valve 24 Located between the ports is a valve 24 cooperating with both of the ports, this valve being carried by a valve lever 25 also pivoted to the bracket 21 and having a forwardly projecting sheet engaging end 26 adapted to project through an openi ngiflin the tracker bar so as to be in position to be engaged by the edge of the music sheet as it passes over the tracker bar thereby to swing the valve.
  • the adjustable or swinging port lever 17 is connected by a light coil spring 27 with the valve lever 26, while the adjustable or swinging port lever 18 is also connected by a light coil spring 28 with the port lever 17, so that on the adjustment of the port lever 17 the port lever 18 will be correspondingly adjusted therewith.
  • Garried by the port lever 17 is an overhanging arm 29 having a depending portion 30 in position to be engaged by the adjusting screw 31 carried by the port lever 18, and which screw rides back and forth on the depending portion 30 as the port lever 17 is adjusted.
  • This adjusting screw also enables the port lever 18 and its port 16 to be adjusted relatively to the valve lever independently of any ad justment of the port lever 17 and its port 15.
  • the depending portion 42 thereof is provided with a threaded opening into which projects a screw 32, the headed end 33 of which is located in a countersunk opening of a plate 34 secured to the side wall of the casing 3 so that this screw can have no movement lengthwise.
  • a knurled wheel 35 mounted on this screw adjacent to the plate 34 is a knurled wheel 35 pinned as at 36 to the screw.
  • the valve lever 25 is bent upwardly to provide a recess as at 40 to extend over the coil spring 28 and not interfere with its action.
  • the port 16 which is usually formed as a tube carried by the port lever 18, is a flexible conduit or hose 41 which in turn is connected with a nipple opening into one side of the double pneumatic while the other port 15 is connected by a similar flexible conduit or hose with a nipple opening into the other side of the double pneumatic, the two pneumatics being connected together in turn with the main pumping bellows by a suitable passage 43 and these two pneumatics are provided with the usual bleeds 44 which are smaller than the ports 15 and 16 and these bleeds are in communication with the passage 43.
  • the present improvement provides two adjustable ports so organized that the ad justment of one of the ports by the operator correspondingly and simultaneously adjusts the other, and that both of the ports are controlled by a single valve, the forward end of which is in engagement with the edge of the music sheet, and that furthermore, by reason of the construction shown, the possibility of accidentally knocking either of the ports out of their adjusted position is avoided, while at the same time one of the ports may be adjusted independently of its companion port, and that both of these port-s are located in juxtaposed position and at the same end of the music sheet rolls and are controlled by a double pneumatic without other appurtenances such as valve boxes or otherwise, and that by reason of having both ports adjustable and located in the manner stated to cooperate with a single valve greater scope of movement is obtainable while the individually adjustable port may be readily adjusted relatively to the valve lever to insure the perfect working of the device and also .readily adjusted to correspond with different thicknesses of packing on the valve lever, and that also by reason of the present construction and organization
  • the double pneumatic is secured to a suitable support at the same end of the tracker bar casing to which the tracking device, ports and valve lever are secured, and this double pneumatic comprises two pneumatics A and A connected together by a bracket 50 so that they will move in unison. In prac tice the valve lever may be held in such position relatively to its two ports that it will just slightly bleed. When the music sheet is over the tracker bar and pumping is going on both ports will be slightly bleeding and balancing both pneumatics.
  • the main purpose of the spring 28 is to permit the port 18 to yield with the valve lever when the valve lever moves over to engage the port. In other words, should there be a mutilation in the music sheet, when this mutilation reaches the valve lever it will move the valve lever into engagement with the port 16 and if this port was a non-yielding port the result would be a further tear in the sheet.
  • the two pneumatics are maintained in a balanced position so long as the valve 24 is maintained in a balanced position by the paper, but the moment the paper moves to one side or the other it will move sufiiciently far to shut elf enough air to overbalance one of the bleeds and therefore one of the pneumatics, whereupon the movement of this pneumatic will efiect a movement of the paper in the manner hereinbefore described.
  • valve lever there is a port and that both of these ports are swinging or adjustable ports, and that when the paper is properly tracking these two ports will be slightly open or bleeding, the valve lever being between the two so as to give an equal pressure on the bellows of the double pneumatic and when the paper moves in one direction one port will be closed or substantially so, and when it moves in the other di rection the other port will be effected in the same way and the pneumatic will then operate through the connecting rod and cam to move the music sheet roll in the usual way, so that by the provision of a pair of pneumatics operating in the manner described the action of one counterbalances that of the other and there is consequently maintained an equilibrium to properly maintain the sheet in its proper position relatively to the tracker bar.

JOSEPH W. DICKINSON, OF CRANFORD, NEW JERSEY, AS'SIGNOR TO THE SCHUBER-T PIANO COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
TRACKING OR SHEET-GUIDING DEVICE.
Application filed December 5, 1913.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH IV. DICKIN- SON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cranford, in the county of Union and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tracking or Sheet-Guiding Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to tracking or sheet guiding devices for automatic player instruments, such as automatic pianos, and it more particularly relates to improved pneumatic mechanism for controlling the movement of sheets or. webs, such for instance as perforated music sheets, the object of the invention being to provide an improved mechanism of this character simple in its construction and positive in its action, and by means of which the music sheet will be automatically maintained in its proper position so that the perforations of the music sheet will properly coincide or track with the corresponding perforations or apertures of the tracker board during the playing of the instrument, and which mechanism may also be readily adjusted to correspond with different widths of music sheets, one of the objects of the present improvement being to provide a pair of juxtaposed adjustable ports controlled by a single valve located between such ports and so organized that the adjustment of one port will correspondingly adjust the companion port, while one port may be adjusted independently of the other, and in which mechanism the organization and construction is such that the single valve lever may be much lighter and more sensitive than is possible with usual mechanisms of this kind.
A further object of the invention is the provision of an improved sheet guiding device which may be readily accessible to the operator, but which at the same time cannot be knocked out of adjusted position accidentally, and in which by means of the provision of a pair of adjustable ports adjust able simultaneously and yet controlled by a single movable valve, one part of which is adapted to be engaged by the edge of the music sheet, increased scope of movement is obtainable.
The present mechanism is so organized and constructed that should the edge of the music sheet opposite to the valve-controlled Specification of Letters Patent.

ports be mutilated, the operation of the mechanism will not be interfered with, in other words where ports are provided at each end of the tracker bar for engagement by the traveling web, or where valve-controlled levers are located at each side of the music sheet to be engaged thereby, it follows that if one edge of the sheet is torn or mutilated the mechanism will be operated prematurely at times, although the per foratio-ns therein may be in perfect registration with the tracker board perforations, and the sheet so be thrown out of register. In the present mechanism, however, it is not necessary that both edges of the sheet be in perfect condition.
In the drawings accompanying and forming part of this specification, Figure 1 is a perspective view of this improved mechanism as the same may be applied to a pianoforte, the usual mechanism for rotating the music sheet rolls being omitted as this is well known; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the adjustable ports and the valve lever for controlling the same, the figure being intended to show the position of the valve while the machine is being played, in other words when the sheet is in position across the tracker bar and pumping is proceeding, in which position the valve is in a leaking or bleeding condition; Fig. 3 is a front view of the sheet guiding device shown in Fig. 2;
and Fig. 4: is a rear view of the double pneumatic shown.
Similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts throughout the several figures of the drawings.
The present improvement is particularly adapted for self-playing instruments, and in the present embodiment thereof it is shown constructed for that purpose.
The music rolls are preferably carried by a suitable casing or boX 2 of any desired construction. The music roll 8 carrying the record or sheet which is to travel over the perforated tracker bar or board 5 is located between a pair of bearing members 6 and 7 carried at opposite ends of the casing. The bearing member 6, fixedly secured at one side of the casing, includes the usual spring plunger having a socket for the reception of one end of the shaft of the music roll 3. The bearing member 7 )rojects through the opposite side of the casing and is slidably movable therein, the outer end being adapted to be engaged by a groove in a suitable cam 8 carried on an upright shaft 9 having a crank 10 connected by adjustable telescopic rods 11 with an arm 12 of the double pneumatic 13. By this organization the music roll is maintained in engagement with the bearing member 7 which in turn is maintained in engagement with the cam.
The take-up roll 14 is suitably supported at the opposite side of the tracker board or bar, these two rolls being operated by suitable driving mechanism. The tracking device comprises a pair of ports 15 and 16, the port 15 being carried by a lever 17, while the port 16 is carried by a lever 18, and both of these levers are pivotally connected as at 19 and 20 respectively to a bar or bracket 21 having an upright arm 22 in position to be secured to the side wall 23 of the casing 2, and in such position that the forward end of the port lever 17 which is provided with a depending portion 42 may project below the tracker-board for the purpose hereinafter stated. Located between the ports is a valve 24 cooperating with both of the ports, this valve being carried by a valve lever 25 also pivoted to the bracket 21 and having a forwardly projecting sheet engaging end 26 adapted to project through an openi ngiflin the tracker bar so as to be in position to be engaged by the edge of the music sheet as it passes over the tracker bar thereby to swing the valve.
The adjustable or swinging port lever 17 is connected by a light coil spring 27 with the valve lever 26, while the adjustable or swinging port lever 18 is also connected by a light coil spring 28 with the port lever 17, so that on the adjustment of the port lever 17 the port lever 18 will be correspondingly adjusted therewith. Garried by the port lever 17 is an overhanging arm 29 having a depending portion 30 in position to be engaged by the adjusting screw 31 carried by the port lever 18, and which screw rides back and forth on the depending portion 30 as the port lever 17 is adjusted. This adjusting screw also enables the port lever 18 and its port 16 to be adjusted relatively to the valve lever independently of any ad justment of the port lever 17 and its port 15. For adjusting the port lever 17 the depending portion 42 thereof is provided with a threaded opening into which projects a screw 32, the headed end 33 of which is located in a countersunk opening of a plate 34 secured to the side wall of the casing 3 so that this screw can have no movement lengthwise. Mounted on this screw adjacent to the plate 34 is a knurled wheel 35 pinned as at 36 to the screw. By rotating this wheel the screw 32 is rotated and as it has no lengthwise movement it follows that the adjustable port lever 17 is shifted back and forth on its pivot 19 and through the medium of the coil springs herefore described also moves the port lever 18, which is maintained in proper relation to the port lever 17, by means of the overhanging bracket or arm 29 engaging the end of the adjustable screw 32. By means of the knurled wheel and the adjustable screw 32 it will be obvious that the port lever 17 cannot be accidently knocked out of position even though these parts are located in such position relatively to the front of the tracker bar that the knurled wheel 35 can be readily manipulated by the operator, and as the port lever 18 does not extend forward of the bracket 21 it follows that this port cannot be accidently knocked out of ad justed position.
The valve lever 25 is bent upwardly to provide a recess as at 40 to extend over the coil spring 28 and not interfere with its action.
Connecting the port 16, which is usually formed as a tube carried by the port lever 18, is a flexible conduit or hose 41 which in turn is connected with a nipple opening into one side of the double pneumatic while the other port 15 is connected by a similar flexible conduit or hose with a nipple opening into the other side of the double pneumatic, the two pneumatics being connected together in turn with the main pumping bellows by a suitable passage 43 and these two pneumatics are provided with the usual bleeds 44 which are smaller than the ports 15 and 16 and these bleeds are in communication with the passage 43.
It will thus be seen from the foregoing that the present improvement provides two adjustable ports so organized that the ad justment of one of the ports by the operator correspondingly and simultaneously adjusts the other, and that both of the ports are controlled by a single valve, the forward end of which is in engagement with the edge of the music sheet, and that furthermore, by reason of the construction shown, the possibility of accidentally knocking either of the ports out of their adjusted position is avoided, while at the same time one of the ports may be adjusted independently of its companion port, and that both of these port-s are located in juxtaposed position and at the same end of the music sheet rolls and are controlled by a double pneumatic without other appurtenances such as valve boxes or otherwise, and that by reason of having both ports adjustable and located in the manner stated to cooperate with a single valve greater scope of movement is obtainable while the individually adjustable port may be readily adjusted relatively to the valve lever to insure the perfect working of the device and also .readily adjusted to correspond with different thicknesses of packing on the valve lever, and that also by reason of the present construction and organization the valve lever can be made much lighter and is therefore more sensitive, while the adjusting devices 32 and 35 may be located below the tracker bar so as to be away from the sheet engaging portion of the valve lever, while at the same time the tracking device is much stronger and is more easily accessible to the operator.
The double pneumatic is secured to a suitable support at the same end of the tracker bar casing to which the tracking device, ports and valve lever are secured, and this double pneumatic comprises two pneumatics A and A connected together by a bracket 50 so that they will move in unison. In prac tice the valve lever may be held in such position relatively to its two ports that it will just slightly bleed. When the music sheet is over the tracker bar and pumping is going on both ports will be slightly bleeding and balancing both pneumatics. While the spring 28 is normally under tension and tends to draw the port lever 18 toward the port lever 17, the movement of this port lever 18 toward the port lever 17, by means of the spring, is determined by the adjustable stop 31, and while the spring 27 is also normally under tension so that when pumping is not proceeding this spring would tend to draw the valve toward the port 15, provided the music sheet was not in its proper tracking position which would sometimes only occur at the start-ofi' of the operation, yet as soon as the mechanism is put into operation one of the pneuinatics would start to collapse and thus move the music roll so that the music sheet will engage the end of the valve lever and thus move the valve lever into the position shown in Fig. 2, in other words, into a balanced position where both ports are slightly bleeding. In other words, when the music sheet is properly tracking its position is such that it engages the end of the valve lever 26 and so holds the valve lever in a balanced posi tion between the two ports 15 and 16 and this is also the case even though no pumping is going on provided, as stated, the music sheet is in that position where it would properly track.
The main purpose of the spring 28 is to permit the port 18 to yield with the valve lever when the valve lever moves over to engage the port. In other words, should there be a mutilation in the music sheet, when this mutilation reaches the valve lever it will move the valve lever into engagement with the port 16 and if this port was a non-yielding port the result would be a further tear in the sheet.
By reason of a suction through the passage 43 and the two bleeds 44, the two pneumatics are maintained in a balanced position so long as the valve 24 is maintained in a balanced position by the paper, but the moment the paper moves to one side or the other it will move sufiiciently far to shut elf enough air to overbalance one of the bleeds and therefore one of the pneumatics, whereupon the movement of this pneumatic will efiect a movement of the paper in the manner hereinbefore described.
From the foregoing it will be observed that at each side of the valve lever there is a port and that both of these ports are swinging or adjustable ports, and that when the paper is properly tracking these two ports will be slightly open or bleeding, the valve lever being between the two so as to give an equal pressure on the bellows of the double pneumatic and when the paper moves in one direction one port will be closed or substantially so, and when it moves in the other di rection the other port will be effected in the same way and the pneumatic will then operate through the connecting rod and cam to move the music sheet roll in the usual way, so that by the provision of a pair of pneumatics operating in the manner described the action of one counterbalances that of the other and there is consequently maintained an equilibrium to properly maintain the sheet in its proper position relatively to the tracker bar.
It will be understood that the various details may be more or less modified without departing from the gist of this invention or the spirit and scope thereof.
