Be it known that l, DAvIu L. Norman,
citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Autornaue Fasteners for Window-Closures,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in ie automatic fasteners forwindow-closures, the object of the invention being to provide improved means for holding a pivoted sash in open position, and permitting the Window to close and look by gravity when a lo lire occ urs.

In the frame 1, at the top thereof, I proor: vide a pivoted lock 4: secured to a bracket 5 fixed within the hollow frame. The bracket 5 has parallel ears 6 for the reception of a pivot pin 7 pivotally securing the lock thereto, and said.v lock normally falls by gravity, so that it projects through a slot 8 in frame 1 and lies in the path of movement of the upper end of sash 2, locking this upper endof the sash against inward move- The loci: is limited in its pivotal movement, so that Fig. 1 shows its extreme p0sition. To the sill 9, of frame 1, a bracket 10 is secured, and is provided with a beveled tongue 11 adapted to receive a hook shaped catch 12 pivotally connected by a bracket 13 to the lower portion of the sash, and lock this lower portion of the sash against outward movement.
The bracket 10 is provided at its innerso portion below the tongue ll with a curved finger 1 lior a purpose which will hereinafter appear.
On the sash 1, at its upper end, a bracket 15 is secured by screws 17, and this bracket has an outwardly projecting lug 18 to which one bifurcated end of a block19 is pivotally connected by means of a pin 20. The other bifurcated end of a block 19 is pivotally connectcd by a pin 21 with the lower end of a plunger 22. This plunger 22 extends through a slot 2-3 in bracket 15, and has an enlarged head 24 at its upper end adapted when the sash is in closed position to lie below the g'iivoted loch i.
A hook is pivotally connected to the firstmentioned bifurcated end of block by means of a pin 26, and this hook 2-5 is connected to the upper end of a chain 27, the latter having a fusible link between. its ends, and at'its free end provided with a ring 29 to engage the finger 14: above referred to. v
A chain. 30 connects the pivoted catch 1: with a hook 31 secured on pin 21. As seen most clearly in Fig. 1, the positioning of the ring 29 over the finger 14 holds the sash in open position. In case of fire, the heat will destroy the fusible link connection :28, so that-the sash may fall by gravity to closed position.
When the sash closes, the upper beveled end thereof will move the lock 4 up into the frame until the sash closes, when said lock will fall to locking position as shown in full lines in Fig. 1. At the same time, when the sash closes, the pivoted hook 12 will ride over the tongue 11 and fall into locked position as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 1.
The unlocking and opening movement of the sash is accomplished by a pull upon the chain 27. A downward pull on this chain 27 will cause the block 19 to fulcrum on the pivot pin 20. This movement of block 19 ill elevate the plunger 24: and force the lock 4 up into frame 1. At the same time, such pivotal movement of the block 19 will exertan upward pull on chain 30 to elevate catch 12, and a continued pull on chain 27 will draw the sash to open position when the ring 29 will be positioned over the finger 14-,
and the sash securely held in this position until the ring is removed or the fusible link destroyed.
Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my l11VGHtl011,Wl1lb I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. The combination with a frame and a gravity closing pivoted sash therein, of a locking device adapted to lie in front of the upper end ofthe sash, a bracket secured to the sash and having a slot therein, a plunger movable longitudinally and vertically through the opening in the slot, a block piv otally connected adjacent one end to the bracket and at its longer end pivotally connected to the lower end of the plunger, said plunger adapted when moved vertically to lift the locking device out of the path of the sash, and a flexible operating device connected to the shorter end of the block, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a frame and a gravity closing pivoted sash therein, of a locking device adapted to lie in front of the upper end of the sash, a bracket secured to the sash and having a slot therein, a plun-.
ger movable longitudinally and vertically through the opening in the slot, a block pivotally connected adjacent one end to the bracket and at its longer end pivotally connected to the lower end of the plunger, said plunger having an enlarged head at its upper end larger than the slot in the bracket, adapted when moved vertically to lift the locking device out of the path of the sash, and a flexible operating device connected to the shorter end of the block, substantially as described.
3. The combination with a frame and a gravity closing pivoted sash in the frame, of a locking device supported in the upper portion of the frame and normally lying in front of the sash, a bracket secured to the upper portion of the sash, a block pivotally connected near one end to the bracket, a plunger pivotally connected to the longer end of the block and guided in its vertical movement through the bracket, said plunger adapted when moved vertically to lift the locking device out of engagen'ient with the sash, a locking device on the lower portion of the sash adapted to engage a fixed device on the frame, a flexible device connecting the pivotal connection of the block and plunger with the last-mentioned locking device, and a second flexible device connected to the shorter end of the block and adapted to engage a part fixed to the frame to hold the sash in open position, substantially as described.
