Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that 1, JOHN VVALnnR, a suhject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of 1426 Queen street west, in the city of Toronto, county of York, Province of Ontario, in the Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Horseshoes, of which the following is a specification.

The invention relates to improvements in horse shoes as described in the present specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings that form part of the same.

The invention consists essentially in the novel means employed whereby a plurality of metal calks are removably fastened to the shoe and are readily detachable.

The objects of the invention are to produce a horse shoe in which the parts receiving the most usage will be detachable and therefore replaceable when worn out, thus prolonging the life of the horse shoe itself and generally to provide a safe, cheap and durable horse shoe.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the horse shoe complete. F 2 is a perspective detail of the locking plate. Fig. 3 is a detail of the metal calk.

Like numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in each figure.

Referring to the drawings 1 is the shoe having on the bottom of the front the cleat 2 as is customary.

9 are curved intermediate bosses similar to the bosses 8 but having their flat faces toward the recesses 6 and 7.

10 are tapered fastening blocks having the solid ends 11 adapted to abut the flat faces of the bosses 8 and 9, and the V-shaped ends 12 corresponding to the various call: recesses and a ricess 13, said blocks hein securely riveted to the shoe 1 by the rivets let.

15 are screws having square driver holes 16 and ratchet teeth 17 around each head; said screws are inserted in the holes 18 through the beds of the recesses 13.

19 are dogs secured to the blocks 10 at the opposite end of the recesses 13 from the screws 15 and adapted to engage the teeth 17 of said screws thus locking said screws.

20 are metal calks fitting into the several call: recesses and each formed of an angular piece adapted to be held between the pointed ends of the blocks 10 and the walls of the calk recesses.

21 is a groove on either side of the shoe and having therein the nail holes 22 for the purpose of attaching the shoe to the horses hoof, as customary.

hen inserting the calks the screw 15 is loosened slightly by releasing the dog 1) and turning the screw. The locking plate 1.0 is then raised slightly so as to allow of the metal call; dropping into its place. Following this, the screw is tightened thus pinching the calk between a block 10 and the walls of a calk recess, said block being of such a. length that it does not touch the shoe at the end next the bosses, thus giving greater rigidity to the calks.

llhat I claim is:

A horse shoe comprising a body having interinediate ['lat faced bosses and bosses at the heels and toe forming angular call; recesses, angle piece calks fitting into said recesses, fastening blocks tapered and having longitudinal recesses and at their front ends engaging said calks and at their rear ends said intermediate bosses, a screw in each of said blocks engaging said body and having a ratchet head, a rivet fastening each of said blocks to said body, and a dog in each of said recesses engaging said ratchet.
