Referring to the present embodiment ot iny y invention as herein shown, the same comprises three main parte, to wit the engine of the drill, the feed device thereof arranged in arial valinement with the engine,
and a head block connecting the engine and feed device and by preference orniingV a part ol the teed device.
My present invention concerns more particularly the feed device and the valve mechanisrn intermediate thesame and the engine. 'llhe latter, as to its details, forms no part et my present invention and hence the same will he described only in a general Way.
The engine part of the machine consists et afcylinder 1, piston 2, impact piece 3, drill socket d and distributing valve mechanism. The cylinder is provided with two similar inlet `passages 5 communicating with the source oi motive duid indirectly through the feed device in a manner hereinafter explained. Between these inlet passages is formed the distributing valve chamber coinlnunicating therewith by ports l and with the rear end of the piston chamber by port 8. rlhevalve 9 operates in a valve cage comprising two valve seats 10 and 11 and sleeve 12 which has inlet ports 13 communicating; with port 7. llhe two seats have ports la and 15 controlled by the valve, port 14 communicating with passage 16 leading to the front end of the piston chamber through port 17. A coiled spring 18 is interposed between the seat il and a plug 19 extending into the valve chamber and held in place hy the head block 20. ln ad dition to the ports mentioned thecylinder l has exhaust ports i7 and ,groove L18.
Referring next to the head block and subn sequently to the feed device, this block is adapted to torni the head of the cylinder and also to hold the plug` 19 in place, particularly when the latter is not screw threaded. lo this end this block is provided With a cylindrical boss 20a litting into the piston chamber and consequently interlocking with the cylinder. it is also pro vided with a series of ports 21 communi-Y cating' with cylinder exhaust ports herein after described. The block is also provided with a central bore or chamber 2Q for the passage oi inotive fluid tothe engine through a wide port communicating with the ports 5. This port 23 also receives at its central portion the diainetrical rib 19* of the plug thereby holding such plug in posi tion and serving as means for interlocking the block with this portion of the engine structure. Within the bore of the block is arranged a loaded valve comprising a pie ton 2d movable therein and held to upper position when viewed as in llig. l by means of the coiled spring 25 which loads the valve with from 20 to 25 pound pressure which is the desirableV one in practice. This coiled spring bears at its lower end against an adjustable nut or plug 2G screwing into the lower end of the block and after passing through the hollow piston it hears against the bottom of the socket formed by the hollow piston stem. At its upper end this stein carries a head 27 having ports or openings therethrough and constituting a valve gov erning the passage of the motive Huid to the valve chamber through the port 23, this head being movable to open and close said port. The motive fluid is supplied through the feed device and the same enters the chamber 22 through the port 28.
The feed device ma be described in general as consisting o with the result that 'the air admitted to them extends them and causes a feeding of the drill as the drilling operation proceeds. As herein shown the head block itself constitutes one of the main parts of these telescoping cylinders and in fact constitutes the mova le one or rather thevpiston portion of such feed device. The head block is provided with a tubular extension 29, preferably integral therewith and comprising the inner vsection of the inner cylinder or what will be hereinafter referred to as the piston yof the feed device. To this inner section is secured 4in suitable manner a second tubular section 30 closed at its outer end by a cap or thimble 31 secured to the section 30. The

The outer cylinder or stationary part of the feed device is also preferably made of several sections. The outer end section 37 is tubular and closed by an end piece 38 carrying a suitable point 39. The inner end of t e section 37 is secured to a section 40 having an internal circular flange 40 between which and an inner section 4l is clamped` suitable ,packing 42 bearing against the sides of the piston of the feed device. This inner section 41 is held in place by means of the couplin ring 43 screwing upon the section 40 and having a' shoulder bearing against a corres ending shoulder on the section 41. 8. ln a tool `of the class described, the combination of a drilling engine, a feed device, a connecting member located between the engine and said device and having a passage from said device to the engine, the air feed device comprising telescoping cylinders theinner one of, which is connected to said member and vprovided with an internal conical seat, a sleeve located within the inner cylinder and secured to said member and seating on said seat, the sleeve forming with the inner cylinder an annular oil chamber and having an oil port to the interior of the sleeve which communicates vvith said passage, and means forv su plying the motive fluid direct to the air eed device.
