To all 'whom it may concern Be 1t known that I, Pnrnn J. Jononnn, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Sheboygan Falls, in the county of Sheboy-` had to the accompanying drawings, which are a part of this specification.
This invention relates to feeding1 means for planers and the like machines and has for its object to increase the hearing` surface of the feed rollers on the work by providing the feeding rollers in tra-ins and permitting` `them to slant to obtain a secure engagement with work of tapering thickness.
With the ahove and other objects in view the invention consists in the feeding device for planers and the like as herein claimed and all equivalents.
Referring to the accompanying drawings in which like characters of reference indicate the saine parts in the different views:
Figure 1 is a plan view of a feeding; device for planers and the like constructed in accordance with this invention; Fig. 2 is a side view thereof with parts in section; and, Fig. 3 is an end view thereof showing the ability of the feed rollers to assume an inclined position.
In these drawings indicates a frame preferably of a rectangular construction as shown but which may be of any desired construction. A driving shaft 11 passes through the frame and has pivotally mounted thereon a number of arms 12 arranged in pairs, one pair of arms being' provided for each feeding unit and there being,1 as many feeding units as desired or as required by the width of the feeding table of the planer or the like with which the feeding device is used. The arms 12 at their outer ends rest upon the :frame 10* but are free to swing upwardly. Each pair of arms 12 forms a` swinging frame for one or more feed rolls 13 which are preferably of solid metal with serrated edges and provided with central grooves containing sprocketteeth 111-. The rolls are loosely mounted on pins 15 and the pins of the rolls at the outer ends of the swinging frames are pivotally mounted in openings 16 thereof, the arms 12 having pivot pins 17 passing" through them for this purpose, so that one arm may he lifted hi `eher than the other to permit the rolls between thcm to assume an inclined position as shown in Eig'. 3. llhe other roll or rolls of each .swingingl frame have blocks 18 at the ends of their pins 15 which hlocks slidably fit within grooves 19 of the arms l2 so that these rolls are free to independently assume angular positions, the loose fit of the parts preventing their binding. Vfhe driving shaft 11 has a sprocket wheel 2() fixed on it between each pair of arms 12 and a chain 21 passes around said sprocket wheel and the groove of the end roll and also fits within the grooves of the intermediate roll or rolls so as to drive them at the sam-e speed.
In operation the feed rolls are all driven from the driving shaft 11 and are held by the frame 10 at such a distance above the feed table that when work is placed on' the feed tahle and pressed against the rolls the rolls will ride on top thereof, the swinging frame simportine1 them permitting of their rising' movement, and the work is thus forced by the rolls to slide over the feed table and into engagement with the planer or other cutter' or tool working thereon. The feeding; engagement of the rolls is not confined to a sinejle line of cont-act as with a single roll, but there may be as many rolls as desired, though two are usually found su'l'licient, one engaging the work ahead of the cutting too-l and the other engaging the work behind the cutting tool. Also the ability of the feed rolls to rock from side to side permits them to find their full hearing on the work even though the work may be tapered in thickness. The end rolls are permitted to rock by reason of their pivotal connections with the swinging frames 12 which are independently mounted so that one may assume a higher position than the other and the other rolls are permitted to rock by reason of the pins on which they are mounted being slidably mounted in the vertical slots of the swinging arms. These rocking movements of the rolls do not in terfere with their driving' connection as their sprocket teeth remain in engagement with the chain. The rolls rise and fall with the varyingr thickness of the work to remain in engagement therewith, the rise and fall of the end rolls producing a swinging movement of the swinging' frames while the rise and fall of the other roll independent of the swinging frames..
l/Vhat I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A feed device for planers and the like, comprising a driving shaft, a sprocket wheel on the driving shaft, a swingingframe pivotally mounted on the driving shaft, a pair of feed rolls carried by the swinging frame, one feed roll being intermediate the driving shaft and the other feed roll, sprocket teeth formed in grooves of the feed rolls, and a chain passing around the sprocket wheel and the end feed roll and in engagementl with the teeth thereof and engaging the teeth of the intermediate roll.
2. feed device for planers and the like, comprising a pair of independently pivoted arms, a rotary feed roll mounted between the arms and having pivotal connection therewith, a second rotary feed roll between the arms and having a sliding connection therewith, and means for driving the feed rolls.
3. A feed device for planers and the like, comprising a pair of feed rolls in train independently mounted with their axes tiltable, sprocket teeth on the feed rolls, a driving means, and a chain connecting the driving means with the sprocket teeth of both feed rolls.
4. A feed device for planers and the like, comprising a pair of independently mounted swinging arms, a pin pivotally mounted between the arms, and a suitably driven feed roll mounted on the pin.
5. A feed device for planers and the like, comprising a pair of independently mounted swinging arms, capable of a swinging movement independent of each other, a pin slidably and tiltably mounted between the arms, and a suitably driven feed roll mounted on the pin.
6. A feed device for planers and the like, comprising a driving shaft, a sprocket wheel thereon, swinging arms pivotally mounted on the driving shaft on either side of the sprocket wheel, a pin connecting the arms and having pivotal connections therewith, a second pin connecting the arms and having sliding` connections with the arms, feed rolls rotatably mounted o-n said pins and provided with sprocket teeth, and a chain surrounding the end feed roll and the sprocket wheel and engaging the teeth thereof and also engaging the teeth of the other feed roll.
