Be it known that I, XVALLACE T. McKeen, of Kew Britain, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented and made a new and useful Improvement in Latches for Doors and I do hereby declare the following to be a correct ,description of the same.'

In spring-latches it is usualA to provide a catch for holding the latch back, and also to block said latch when projected, to prevent thev door being opened from outside.

My invention is for accomplishing the before-named object, and consists in a hook that is upon thcspindie of the knob, by which the latch is drawn back, so that the knob can be operated andthe latch drawn hack as heretofore, 0r the -knob can be partially ro!l tated to bring-thehooltinto action. lf thisis done when the latch is projected, the latch will be blocked so that it cannot he drawn back, and if the knob is turned when therlateh is retracted, it is held back out of action by the 4hook taking behind a block or stud.

The latch his projected by the spring c, and has a tail-piece, d, that' is acted upon by the lever c;

The tutnblers f and lever e are moved by .akey passing through theeap-plate.

A socket, t', is shown for the end of key, anda fence or shield, 7.', is shown as intervening between the keytuniblers and the latch itself'.

The parts t-hus fardescribed inay be of any desired construction.

A knob or button, I, is provided to draw back the latch b, the steinY ot the same passing through a. slot in the lock-case, as usual but, insteadof the said knob or buttonk being simply attached to the latch Z1. the stein 2 of the knob passes through the latch, and can be partially revolved, and upon the inner end of this spindle or steln 2 thc hook mais attached.

'This hook is held by a sp1-ing, n, on the latch b, taking one of the two notches in the hub or, eye ot' the hook, to prevent its being,r moved by shaking the door, and when the hook m is in the position sli'own in tig. l the latch is free to act as usual; but when itis turned up against the stud 1', the latch will be blocked, (sce dotted lines, tig. l and when the latch is retracted it can be held by partially revolving .the knob l, so'that the hook m takes! the other side of the stud o' and holds the latch back.
