EDWARD C. SEYMOUR, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
PAPER-GUIDE FOR PRINTING-PRESSES.
Application filed December 19, 1912.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD C'. SEYMOUR,
a citizen of the United States of America,v
residing at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Guides for Printing-Presses, of which the following' is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In printing presses of the type wherein the sheets are caughtby grippers on a gripper roll and carried the-roby into contact with the member, either platen or roll, that gives the impression, guides are used which arrest the paper in exact position for being proper y picked up by the grippers. These guides are so disposed as to be accurately adjusted for a set of grippe-rs in order to secure proper registration of the sheet.l
Ordinarily it has been customary to employ one set of grippers on ro-ll and one set of guides therewith so that onesheet only is picked up by the gripper roll in one revolution. If the sheet occupies less than one-half of the roll the remainder of `the roll is not utilized and consequently the capacity of the press is limited to the speed of revolution of the gripper roll.
This invention relates to guides for printing presses which are arranged for adjustment with one set of grippers and are likewise so disposed as to automatically read-` just themselves into proper relation to a second set of grippers so that a gripper roll may carry two sheets during each revolution into contact with the imprinting member.
rThe invention consists in the matters hereinafter set forth and more` particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a view, partially in end elevation and partially in section, of a gripper roll of a printing press provided with guides that embody features of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a view in detail in perspective showing the arrangement of one of the stops in relation to the grippers.
Referring to the drawings, a gripper roll l that is mounted in suitable bearings and in proper relation to a feed table indicated at 2 is provided with a set of grippers shown at 3 that project in the usual manner from the roll surface and are actuated by any suitable mechanism to grasp marginal portions 4 of a sheet that is moved down the feed table 2, and thereby carry the same Speecaton of Letters Patent.

around with the roll. The roll itself' and .the gripper do not per Se form a part of this invention and therefore are not shown in detail.
A rock shaft 5 in parallel relation to the roll axis is oscillated twice during each revolution of the roll by means of a rock arm 6 anld plungeis 7 that is supported by a cam ro 8 traveling on a cam plate 9 that turns with the ioll, the cam having diametrically opposite depressions indicated at l0 and 11. lVhen the cam roll 8 is traveling on the periphery of the plate 9 it swings the rock arm into such a position that a depending guide l2 that is adjustably secured thereon as a collar 13 and a studlt, clears the periphery of the roll but when the roll 8 d rops into a depression 11 the guide 12 enters a. slot 16 in t-he gripper roll and intercepts or forms a stop for the marginal portion 4 of the sheet until the latter has been picked up by the gripper after which the cam roll again swings the guide clear of the roll.
lVhen the cam roller 8 drops into the second depression 10 thereby again throwing the guide 12 into the path of another sheet for bringing the same into register with a second pair of grippers, a plate 17 that is pivot-ed on the guide and which is normally held by a spring linger 18 against a guide lug 19,' is moved into the exact relation desired with the second pair of grippers by contact with an adjustable stop 20. The latter is preferably in the form of a set screw with binding thumb nut 21 thereon, and is carried on the outer end of a lever 22 which extends from a rock rod 23. The poition of the latter is controlled by any suitable means whereby the stop 2O may be moved into the path of and intercept an ear 24; on the plate 17. As herein indicated this may be a rock arm 25 that is oscillated by a spring-returned tappet rod 26 with friction roll 27 traveling on a Cain-plate 28 that moves in timed relation to the cam plate 9. The end view of Fig. l, shows only one of the two or more guides with which the roll is equipped. It is'to be understood that a guide which isa companion to that shown in F ig. 2, is mounted on the shaft 5 to cooperate with the grippers at the other end of the gripper roll 1. As a result of this construction each guide may be accurately adjusted for use with the companion grippers of one set on the roll and then may be moved into proper operative relation to the corresponding grippers of a second set by proper positioning of the movable stops. The construction thus affords tivo independent adjustments for each guide, one for each set of grippers, and enables the operator to arrange a press that is equipped with such guides to give tivo impressions to one revolution of the gripper roll, thereby greatly increasing the capacity of the machine.
One feature of the arrangement is the accuracy With which the guides may be set so that a very large sheet of paper may be brought into proper registration With one set of grippers and a second sheetmay likewise be brought into the proper relation to the second set. lt has been found impossible in practice hitherto to overcome the variations in the press which prevent the placing of the tivo sets of grippers in the dianetrical opposition and this device enables the pressman to gage the guides Without relation to the relative position of the two sets of grippers. Furthermore as each guide is capable of independent adjustment it is possible, when one maro'inal portion of the sheet is found to be in register, to vary the adjustment to bring the other marginal portion into correct register, an arrangement that is necessary in handling very Wide sheets.
Obviously, changes in the details of construction may be made Without departing from the spirit of my invention and I do not care to limit myself to any particular form or arrangement of parts.
l. The combination with a gripper roll, sets of grippers thereon and a table for feeding sheets to the roll and grippers, of a guide for the sheets, means for moving the guide into the path of the sheets to arrest the latter in timed relation to the movement of the sets of grippers, a movable plate on said guide that is normally in register with one set of grippers to arrest a sheet for the grippers, a stop for said guide adapted t-o shift the movable plate into operative regisg j'ter with a gripper of another set, and
means for oscillating the stop to shift the plates in timed relation to the movements of the roll and gripper sets.
2. The conbination of a gripper roll having sets of grippers thereon and a feed table for supplying sheets to the grippers, with a rock shaft, a cam, mechanism operated by the cam and adapted to oscillate the rock shaft in timed relation to the movement of the gripper sets, a guide carried by the rock shaft and moved thereby into the paths of sheets of paper to arrest the latter in timed relation to the movement of the gripper sets, means adjustably securing the guide to the shaft in registration with one set of grippers, a yieldingly movable member on said guide, a stop adapted to shift the position of a guide member When moved into abutment therewith, into registration with another set of grippers, and nechanism for moving the stop to act upon the member in timed re lation to the movement of another set of grippers. y
in testimony whereof l aiix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
