pecieation ci' Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, 1914.
Application filed January 29, 1912. Serial No. 674,111.
To all Ali/"wm itmeg/ concern Be it known thatV l, Ennis L. Fox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Audubon, in the county of Montgomery and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Hedge-Trimmer, oi' which the following, is a specification.
The invention relates to hedge trimmers.
The primary object of the invention isq to provide a machine of this character which may be supported by the body oi." the wearer.
A further object is to provide a cutting machine which may be driven regardless et' the angle at which the machine is placed.
'ln the drawings-Figure l. is a side elevation, parts being shown in section. lfigg. 2 is a top plan. 8 is a top plan show ing a modified form of support. l is rear elevation. Fig, 5 is a section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 2. Fig. 6 is a section on the line 6"-6 of Fig. Fig'. 7 is a detail view of the blade clamp.
In the drawings 10 and il designate the superposcd blades which Jform. the cutting mechanism. Theblade l() is stationar and is reinforced by the longitudinally disposed bar l2 secured to the under face thereof. rJhe bar 14 is secured to the blade l0, said bar supporting the driving mechanism which consists of the gears l5 and 16, the gear l5 being rotated by the crank l?, a disk l?" oi.E leather or other material being positioned on the crank handle to protect the hand oit the Operator. The shaft 1S on which the gear 16 is mounted carries a ily wheel 16 havingl a wrist pinlS connected by the pitman 19 with the bracket 2O arranged on the reciprocating bar ll.. The bar ll4 is provided with elongated slots 2l. The bolts 22 ot clamps, one of which is shown in Fig. 7, pass through these slots and through apen tures in the blade 10. Each clamp includes a member 2li secured tothe bolt 2:2, said member being' formedA with upturned end portionsQ which enter apertures 26 in the bar 10, the bolt receiving washer 27 which I rests upon the blade l1. l The blades are in this manner held together, the blade while being free to reciprocate being held 1n conN strap 32 which is connected to brackets 33 land ,3ft positioned on the bar- 14, and the4 blade l0 respectively, the strapbeing passed over theshoulder of the operator.
ln Fig. 3 the adjustable rest 44 is provided, said rest consisting of the curved member 1G which is secured to an arm 47 adjustably supported by another arm 48 mounted on bar 14. lt will be noted that the supports shown may be readily interchanged according1 to the manner in which the trimmer is used.
The many advantages of a machine of this character will be clearly apparent as it will be noted that the same may be supported to operate in various positions and that the cutting members may always be maintained in 'contact with each other. Itfwill alsoi be seen that the entire structure is 'such as may loe-easily and economically manufactured and the various parts readily assembled.
lVhat is claimed is A hedge trimmer including a reinforcing bar straight from end to end, a stationary blade secured to and extending longitudinally of the bar,a second bar secured to the reinforcing bars, drive mechanism mounted upon said second bar and beyond one end ort the stationary blade, a reciprocating bar constituting a cutting element and actuated by said mechanism, an arm extending horizontally away from the bars and cutting mechanism and at right angles to the bars, a breast engaging rest swiveled on the free end of the arm, a handle upon the drive mechanism and beyond one side of said arm,
The rest is curved to conform to the a handle extending from the bar beyond the my own, I have hereto axed my signature othe` side of dthe amg, amdbm'eam1 oonnecied in the presence of two witnesses. to t e bar an exten in a ove t e arm, or engaging the shouldersgof the operator to ELLIS L FOX' 5 support the bar across the front of the op- W'tnesses:
erator. Y Q WIILIAM GRAHAM,
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as HARRY W. AKINS.
