WATER-GAGE.
Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed June 18, 1913. Serial No. 774,484.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL E. CAUGHEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moline, in the county of Rock Island and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Water-Gages, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in water gages and more particularly to an electrical water gage and the object of the invention is to provide a water gage wherein the height of the water within the boiler will be readily indicated by electrically controlled lights and should the boiler be filled or emptied of its contents, a signal will be promptly given, notifying the operator of the'condition of the water Within the boiler.
Another object of the invention is the pro-' vision of a water gage of the above character which will ossess advantages and points of efficiency and durability, is inexpensive to manufacture, and at the same time is simple in construction and operation.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts as will be hereinafter referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawing forming a part of this application, Figure 1 is a front elevation of a water gage constructed in accordance with my invention and illustrat: ing the application of the same. Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, 1 indicates a boiler which may be of any well known construction, and mounted thereon is a cylindrical casing 2 which is suitably supported by means of the legs 3, said legs being removably secured to the-top portion of the boiler. Pivotally mounted within the central portion of the casing 2, is an arm 4, upon the outer end of which is mounted a contact brush 5. A second contact brush 6 is mounted uponthe arm adjacent the outer end thereof. The inner contact brush 6 is adapted for engagement with a somewhat circular contact plate 7 which is arranged upon the casing 2 and at one side of the center thereof. The contact plate 7 is connected by means of the wire 8 to the line wire 9, whereby suflicient current is supplied to the brush.
Arranged within the casing and arranged in a semicircle around the contact plate 7, are the contact blocks 10, 10" and 11, each of said contactblocks being adapted to be engaged by the contact brush 5 to complete a clrcle, it being understood that each one of the contact blocks is connected through the medium of the wire 12, with the line Wire 9. The contact blocks 1.0 are each connected with a light 13, by means of the wires 14:, the lower one of said lights being directly connected to the wire 12. The upper contact block 10 is-connected by means of the wire 15 to a bell 16, said bell being further connected by means of a wire 17 to the contact block 10. i
Arranged at the'lower end of the blocks 10 is the contact block 11 which is connected, through the medium of the wires 18, to the connecting wire 12, a bell 19 being suitably connected to the wires 18, so that when the contact brush 5 1 is engaged with the block 11, a current will pass through the bell 19 to ring the same. Furthermore, when the brush 5 is in engagement with the block 10, a current will pass through the bell 16.
The arm 4 is rotated in a half-circle by means of a second arm 4, which projects outwardly from the center casting 20. Pivotally secured to the outer end of the arm 4' is a link 21, the lower end of said link being pivotally connected to the upper'end of a float rod 22. Mounted upon the lower end of the rod 22, is a float 23 which may be of any well known construction and which is to be arranged within the boiler 1. From this, it will be seen that as the water rises and falls within the boiler, the float .23 is raised and lowered to actuate the arm 4. From the position illustrated inthe accom panying drawing, it will-be seen that the float 23 is almost at its highest point and the contact brush5 is in engagement with the block 10, thus supplying current to the bell 16 to ring the same, thereby notifying the operator that the water has nearly reached its highest point in the boiler. It will be readily understood that when the float 23 has reached its lowest point in the boiler, the contact brush 5 will be brought into engagement with the block 11, passing a current through the bell 19 to signal the that the brush has passed over.

From the above description taken in connection with the drawings, it will be readily apparent that the height of the Water within the boiler 4 may be readily indicated through the medium of the lights 13. Thus, as the float 23 rises, the contact brush 5 will ass from the block 11 onto the lower one of the blocks 10, lighting the lower light 13 and as thecontact brush 5 passes on to the next block, it will light the second light and by the arrangement of the wires 14, it will be readily seen that a continuous current will be supplied to each one of the lights Thus, as the contact brush reaches its highest point, each one of the lights 13 will be turned on, indicating that the boiler is nearly full and asthe brush engages with the contact block 10, it will ring the bell 16, to indicate that the-boiler is full.
- From this construction, it will be seen that I have provided a simple and durable water gage which will readily signify to the operator the condition of the water within the boiler. It will also be seen that I have provided a device which is simple in construction and can be manufactured at a comparatively low cost.
Y While I have shown and described the preferred form of my invention, it will be obvious that various changes in the details of construction and in the proportions may be resorted to for successfully carryin my invention into practice Without sacri cing any of the novel features or departing from the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is I i In combination with a boiler having an opening in its top, a casing supported by the top of such boiler and having a semi-circular contact plate thereon, an arm pivotally mounted on the casing, a contact brush carried by said arm for engagement with said plate, anarcuate series of contacts arranged in spaced relation with the first contact plate, a second contact brush carried by the outer end of the arm and adapted for engagement with theseries of contacts, a sec- 0nd arm extending at an angle with respect to the first arm, a reciprocating rod directed through the opening in the top of the boiler, a link pivotally connecting the upper extremity of the rod and the second arm, and a goat carried by the lower extremity of the ro In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
