UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOSEPH O. BEAUCHESNE, 0F FALL RIVER, MASSACHUSETTS.
LAMP-CLEANER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, Josnrn O. BEAU- CHESNE, a subject of the King of England, residing at Fall River, in the county of Bristol and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and usefulLamp-Uleaner, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in lamp cleaners, this particular device being adapted. for use in connection with removing the lint and dust from mercury tube electric lights, one object of the invention, being the provision of means whereby the cleaning devices may be readily positioned upon both of the parallel tubes of a light of this character, and be resiliently clamped thereupon, so that the present device may reciprocate to remove the lint and dust from the tubes.
A further object of the present invention is the provision of means for cutting any lint that may tend to wind about the tube so that the same may be readily removed therefrom without the necessity of the employment of an additional tool for cutting the threads.
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a side elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3 is an end view taken from the brush holding end of the device. Fig. 4 is a section taken on line 4-4 of Fig. 1. Fig. 5 is a section taken on line 5-5 of Fig. 1. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the thread cutter per 86.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the main carrying and manipulating member of the device, which is constructed in the form of a pole, so that the said device may be handled to place the cleaning mechanism, as will presently appear, in the proper position upon the mercury tubes or bulbs B. Connected to the upper end of the handle 1 is a cross plate 2, which carries the two parallel brushes 3, while the cooperating brushes 3 are carried by the cross plate 4; in the free end of the Specification of Letters Patent.

pivoted member 5, which member, as clearly shown, is pivoted to the member 1 by means the apertured plate 11 connected to the member 5, there being disposed upon the rod or pin 9 between the members 1 and 5, a spring 12, which has a normal tension to holdthe parts in the position, as shown in Fig. 1. Two springs 13 are disposed be tween the members 1 and 5 and act similarly to the spring 12, thus rendering it necessary to manually move the brushes away from each other for removal from the mercury tubes or bulbs B.
In orderto provide a means for properly guldlng the bulbs between the respective brushes, the resilient arms or guides 14.-14E are carried by the respective brushes 33' so that the bulbs B may be positioned, as shown in Fig. 3, the member 5 being operated to separate the brushes for resilient contact with opposite sides of the bulbs B. When so positioned, the handle 1 is manipulated to reciprocate or slide the brushes up and down upon the tubes and thus clean the lint therefrom. A plate 15 is carried by the member 1, while a pin 16 forms the pivot for the tooth rack 17, its free end being slidably mounted in the slot 18 of the member 1. J ournaled in the apertured lugs 19 of the plate 15, is a pin 20, which supports the ratchet wheel 21, whose toothed periphery engages the tooth rack,
an operating bail 22 for oscillating the wheel 21, being connected to the pin 20. A flexible connection 23 is connected to the bail 22, and extends along the member 1 to the slidably mounted operating member 2%, which is provided with the finger grip 25.
In order to provide means for cutting threads from the bulbs, a plate 26 attachable to as many of the brushes, as may be found necessary, carries the knife or cutter 27.
In order to relieve the tubes B from the weight of the cleaner when being reciprocated and also to prevent any strain that would tend to heat the tubes during the cleaning operation, the hook 28 is carried by the member 1 adjacent to the brushes 6, the l same being disposed to slide upon one of the supporting rods, of the mercury tubes.
What is claimed is:
1. An electric lamp cleaner, including a stall, a lever pivoted to the outer end there of, a resilient connection between the staff and the lever for normally holding the free end of the lever toward the stafi, a pair of coacting brushes carried by the free ends of the stafi and lever, cooperable means carried by the opposite free end of the lever and the stafi? for separating the brushes, and a thread cutter carried by one of the brushes.
2. A lamp cleaner, including a staff, a lever pivoted to the stafi adjacent one end thereof, two cross bars one connected to the other end of the staff and the other to the outer end of the lever, two pairs of 00- Copies of this patent may be obtained for acting brushes carried in the free ends of means mounted upon the staff and connected to the intermeshing means for manually actuating the same.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto afliXed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH O. BEAUCHESNE.
