UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
BERNARD MCGINTY, OF DOYLESTOWN, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR TO PRINTERS SPECIALTIES COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF DELAWARE.
ROLLER-TRUCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 26, '1914.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, BERNARD McGINTY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Doylestown, in the county of Bucks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain Improvements in Roller-Trucks, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to roller trucks for printing presses and its object is to provide means for varying the eective radius of the trucks to secure the desired action of the rollers by which the ink is distributed to the type, plate or other medium used in printing.
In the presses generally used, the elastic inking rollers change in diameter, due to atmospheric and other conditions,'with the result that their pressure upon the type and the amount of ink applied thereto varies so that too little or too much ink is frequently applied with corresponding undesirable results in the work produced. Again, it frequently happens that it is desired to obtain;
a particular effect dependent upon a particular degree of pressure of the rollers upon the type, which cannot be effected without` considerable difficulty or at all by the usual rollers and trucks.
By my improved means, I am enabled to overcome the foregoing defects and attain improve-d efects.
The nature and characteristic features 0f my invention are fully disclosed in the following description and the accompanying drawings in illustration thereof.
In the drawings, Figure l is a transverse sectional view of a type bed containing a frame, in combination with a roller having trucks supported by the tracks at the sides of the bed; Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the end of a roller with my improved truck shown in section; Fig. 3 is a sectional view of a part of a truck of modified form; Fig. 4L is an axial view showing Vthe interior of the truck cup viewed in section in Fig. 2; and F ig. 5 is a side elevation of a part of a printing press illustrating the application of my improvements.
As illustrated in the drawings, the bed l, which contains the type form 2, has the tracks 3 at the sides thereof, in combination with elastic inking rollers t provided with trucks 5 which travel upon the tracks in the operation of moving the rollers over the disk G and the type contained in the form 2.
My trucks 5 comprise the cylindrical truck bodies 5a which are sleeved on the bearings 4a of the rollers 4, the parts 5a having the longitudinal channel 5b and the bearings 4a having the-keys 4b engaged therein whereby the parts' are held together. The bodies 5a are adapted to act direct-ly on the tracks 3 in a usual mannerin case of eXtreme contraction of the rollers or the necessity for extreme pressure thereby.
As illustrated in Figs. 2 and 4, a cup 5c is sleeved on the body 5L (with which it makes a close it) to provide a truck of the effective diameter desired. This cup comprises the cylindrical part 5', which fits upon the periphery of the body 5a, and the web 5 having the key 5 turned in therefrom, the key being engaged in the channel 5b.
Fig. 3 illustrates a modified truck having the body 7a with a conical periphery, in combination with a cup 7c which forms a taper t therewith, whereby such cup can be held in place, either with or without the key 7 for engaging the channel 7b. While the engaging conical surfaces have been shown with a marked inclination to the aXis for the purpose of pointing out the relation distinctly, in practice such inclination is comparatively slight.
It is to be understood that in practice cups are provided of various outer diameters, which will permit the effective working diameters to be varied, say two, four or six points, as may be required by the particular operation in hand.
Having described my invention, I claim:
A truck for a printing press roller comprising a body having a bearing through which it supports said roller, and a cup comprising a band engaging the periphery of said body, a .web extending transversely to and integral with said band, and a lug projecting from said web whereby said cup is fixed relatively to said body.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my name this 29th day of March, 1.912, in the presence of the subscribing witnesses.
BERNARD MCGINTY.
Witnesses:
Jos. G. DENNY, Jr., CHARLES N. BUTLER.
