IM PROVEMENT IN HARVESTERS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 109,755, dated November 29, 1870.

This invention relates to improvements in mowers and reapers; and consists in the method of connecting the lower supplementary frame, to which the cutter and sickle-bars are hinged, with the main frame, to which the tongue is attached.
In the drawing, A A are the master-wheels; B, their axle; O, the upper', and D the lower, frame; E, the caster-wheel; a a, the sockets of the caster-wheel pintle, and Z1 the plate from which said sockets project.
The plate b is supported upon the upper end of the springbar k, the lower end of which is secured to the front extremity of the lower frame, D. From its situation it is obvious that the spring-bar must, to a great extent, answer its purpose of diminishing the force of shocks when the caster-wheel strikes an obstacle, and allow the caster-wheel to mount above the same without very much raising the sickle-bar and frames.
The arms e, to which the rear ends of the side pieces of the lower frame, D, are fastened, extend downward from boxes f, that encircle the axle B.
The bows h, that project downward from the side pieces, c, of the upper frame, C, by the sides of the arms e, are jointed to the latter by pins i. Thus the weight of the upper frame and the actual draft-strain upon the machine, through the medium ot' the tongue, exert a leverage on the frame D, tending` to raise the same so long as it is in the inclined position usual when the machine is in operation.

The frames O and D, connected by means of the bows h hf, angle-irons c e, and axle B, all these parts being arranged as shown and described, whereby a leverageis exerted on the frame D, as set forth.
