To all Iwhen?, t may concern Be it known that l, tfnonon Tonino, a citizen oi' the United States7 and a resident of Mass City, in the county ot Untonagan and State oi' lidichigan, have invented certain new and useful llniproiienients in Gate- Latches, of which the iolloiiiing is a specification, reference being had to the accoiiipanying` drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in sliding gate latches.
The object oi iny invention is to provide an iniiviroved construction and arrangement oi'.E latching niechanisn'i, whereby the gato is automatically fastened when closed and inay be locker, said fasteniiig inei'chaiiisin having means whereby the saine inay be readily released and the gate slid bach to an open posi tion.
lli/ith this and other objects in View the present invention consists in. the conibina.- tion and arrangement ci parts as will be hereinafter more i'iilly described and liiially pointed out in the appended claini7 it being further understood that changes in the speeilic structure shown and described niay be inade within the scope oli the claiin, without departing` i'roin the spirit oli the invention.
ln the drawing l have shown a perspective View of a sliding gate latch embodying .iny invention.
ln the drawing l have shown fragmentary portion oit a gate latch to the upper outer corner of which is secured the latch supporting brackets 19, .latch supporting bracket 18, having on .its sides oppositely positioned late 'ally projecting stop logs i9. .Pivotally connected to the bracket lll is a latch 20, comprising parallel side bars Qi., the outer ends of which curve np fiardlj and are connected by an integral cross bar lThe inner ends of the side bars 2l are bent into the handle formingv loops :23, the inner sides of which are pivotally attached to the bracket, while the outer sides thereof serve as handles for operating the latch or disengaging the saine frein its keeper, hereinaitter described. The ends oi? the loops are disposed over the lugs 19 and arranged at times to contact with the saine, the outer one of which supports and holds the latch in position to engage its lrccper., while the inner lug serves as a stop to liinit the opening movement oit the latch.
@n the latch post 6 is secured a keeper 2e,

coiiliprising a base or attaching plate Q5, which is secured to the post G in any suitable nianner and on which is formed a rectai'igi'ilar block 2G having its upper end beifeled on its outer edge, shown at 2T, and haring il'orined in said end a rectangulainotch 28, adapteiil to receive the cross bar which whenv the gate is closeth rides up the inclined surlace 2T ot the lreeper block and drops into the notch7 tliiis fastening the gate in closed position. 'llhe block 2o is braced laterally by triangular bracing` webs El), and has :tornied in its outer liace a depression or recess 30, which is adapted to receive the ui'iper end oi the lront end bar oil. tle gate. r)This enga geincnt oi'f' the end of the gate with the recess 8() lirinly holds the gate against lateralv ino'venicnt when in a closed position. @n the cross bar 2&2 oi'f the .latch isan ranged. an iii'istanding locking` loop Bl, which when the gate is closed and the latch in en gageineifit with its keeper is adapted to pass between two siinilar locking` staples 82er raiiged on the attaching plate Q5. l lWhen the staples 3i and staples are thiis brought into alinciiiciit, pad-lock inay be engaged therewith and the gate thusA securely locked .in closed position.
By constructiiig a gate latch as herein shown and described., the accumulation o' snow will. not. interfere with. the opening and closing et the saine.
The gate latch is simple, strong, dui-able and inexpensive in construction. etlicient and reliable in operation and can be iorined in any desired size ior a large terni gate or a sinall yard gate.
ltroni the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings the construction and operation oit the invention will be readily ii nderstood without requiring a .more extended explanation.
Tilarioiis changes in the forni, proportion and the .ininor details of construction may be resorted to without departing;` from the principle or sacriiicing any ot the advantages of the invention as claimed.
llaving thus descriliied my said inii'cntioii, what claini as new and desire to secure by United States Letters 'Patent is:
il sliding` gate latch including in coinhination, a supporting bracket having cppositely positioned stop lugs on its sides, a latch coinpiiisiiig parallel side bars the outer ends curving upward and connected by an inte llt) GEORGE. TURINE.
