Description

UNITED sTATEs PATENT oEEroE. Y
Mos E. DIXON, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, ASSIGNOR To WESTERN ELECTRIC COMPANY, OF NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
ELECTROMAGNET.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed December 18, 1912. Serial No. 737,540.
T0 lll whomJ t may concern le it known that I, AMOS F. DIXON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Electromagnets, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description.
This invention relates to electromagnets, and is particularly adapted for use in telephone signal bells, although not exclusively limited to such use.
The object of this invention is to provide an electromagnet structure of the above type in which the adjustment of the armature is easily and positively accomplished, and whose ciciency is high and the construction simple.
To the above end a novel form of link Structure is provided in combination with an armature Support yand adjusting means. The construction of the magnet coils is like wise such as to insure the most efficient Operation.
This invention Will be fully understood from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing in which- Figure 1 shows the invention embodied in a telephone signal bell, one magnet coil of which is shown partly in Section, and Fig. 2 is an expanded View in perspective showing the construction and arrangement of the novel features.
A pair of magnet coils 5 are each provided with a core 6 of` magnetic material. The magnet coils are supported at one end in any suitable manner to a supporting piece 7, and at the other end each core is provided with a contracted portion 8. A pair of non magnetic link pieces 9 are adapted to be placed upon the contracted portions 8 of the core 6 and are held in place by metallic disks 10. These disks are preferably of greater diameter than the diameter of the cores. The disks 10 are welded to the pole pieces 6 in any suitable manner, thus forming a low reluctance connection therebetween. The softening of the end of the pole pieces 6 and the pressure applied to the parts during the welding operation insures a rigid connection for said link pieces 9. The disks 10 being of greater' diameter than that4 of the cores 6 provide pole faces in.
which the magnetic density is less than that in the cores, which construction has been found to be the most etlicient.
The link pieces 9 are each provided with slots 15 and 16, the former Serving as guides and seats for tongues 17 of a fiexible arched armature Support Or bridge 18. A coupling 19 is provided which has tongues 20 adapted to engage the slots 16. The coupling 19 is llkewise provided with a threaded Opening 21 for engaging the threads of an adjusting Screw 22. The arched armature support is provided with a pair of lugs 25 ybetween which the armature 26 is pivotally mounted. The armature 26 may carry a clapper 30 for contacting with gongs 3l.
The adjustment Of the armature 26 is secured by means of the adjusting screw 22, which is provided with a shouldered head 32 and passes through an opening 33 in the arched armaturesupport 18 and an opening 34 in the armature 26. The head 32 engages the edges of the opening 33 in the armature support 18, and as the adjusting screw is threaded into the coupling 19, the
support 18 is flexed to bring the armature nearer the poles of the cores 6. When the adjusting screw, on the other hand, is threaded out of the coupling 19, the resiliency of the arched support 1 3 causes the armature to be moved away from the poles of the cores 6.
What I claim is:
V1. In combination, a pair of magnet cores, a link piece for each Said core, means for securely. connecting said cores and link pieces, a coupling for said link pieces, a bridge coperating with said link pieces, an armature carried by said bridge, and means engaging said coupling to hold Said coupling in place and for adjustably moving said armature by flexing said bridge'.
2. In combination, a pair of magnet cores, a link piece for each Said core, means for Securely connecting Said cores and link pieces, a flexible bridge engaging said link pieces, an armature carried thereby, and means for adjusting said armature by flexing said bridge.
3. In an electromagnet the combination of a pair of cores, a link piece for each Said core, disks for securely connectingsaid cores and link pieces, alcoupling engaging Said link pieces, an armature support likewise screw eopeizifing with said Coupling and armature support. whereby saidv support is fndjnstzibly movable.
4. In combination :i pair of magnet cores, a link piece for each said core, u coupling connecting adjacent ends of said link pieces, :i bridge extending between the outer ends of Suid link pieces7 a member connecting said coupling and said bridge, and an arma- 10 ture mounted upon said bridge.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 17th day of December A. D.
AMOS F. DIXON. Witnesses;
WALTER F. HOFFMAN, 0. D. M. GUTHE.
