EDGAR F.
HEISER, or Kmesroir, mssotmip CYLINDER-REBORING- DEVICE.
Specification 6: Letters Patent.
Patented May 19, 1914.
Application filed February 11, 1914. Serial No. 818,038.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, EDGAR F. HEISER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kingston, in the county of Caldwell and State of Missouri, have invented a new and useful Oylinder-Reboring Device, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for use in metal-working, and particularly to tools and operating means therefor for truing out cylinders.
The principal end in view is to devise an improved method of boring out or reshaping the interior of hollow cylinders, and also to' provide a mechanism which will be adapted for hand operation in connection with engine cylinders, as, for example, in motorcar shops, where it is often vdesired to shape out the interior of cylinders properly without requiring'the mounting o the engine in a power machine.
It is therefore my object to devise improved means for mounting thecutting tool within'the engine cylinder, together with provision for centering the tool-carrying means accurately within the cylinder. This provision for insuring the central alinement of the'tool-carrying meanscomprises a pair of circular blocks so tapered and bored as to fitcylinder bores of slightly varying diameter and also to providebearings for accommodatingthe tool-carrying shaft while centered; after this centering operation, the bearing members proper of the tool-carrying shaft are clamped in position, ing removed and the tool-carrying shaft installedin working position.
The invention willnow be described more particularly in connection with the accompanying drawing showing one form of means which I have devised for carrying out the aforesaid object, after which those features of my improvements deemed to be novel will be particularly specified in the appended claims.
Inl the'drawing Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Flg. 2 is a central longiof the same in working relation to a cylinder; and Fig. 3 is a sectional detail showing the manner of mounting and adjusting the cutting tool, and Fig. 4 is a fragmentary perspective view of the same Fig. 5 is a sectional detail of a portion of the tool-carrying shaft and one of the adjustable bearings.
' adjusted position the centering blocks be--- In the drawing, the cutting tool 2 is illustrated .as carried by a shaft 4, which also operates as a feed-bar, being threaded at one end, and provided at its opposite end. a transverse bore 6 for accommodating.
with a crank arm 8 which is clamped adjustably to the shaft 4 by means of a set screw 10. The tool 2 is also adjustably mounted by having its shank received in a transverse bore 12 in the shaft 4 against the end of an ad ustlng screw 14, the tool being fixed in by means of a clamping screw 16' which engages the shank of the tool through an opening 18 at right angles to the bore 12. This formof tool, however, and the manner of mounting the same,'are not essential to the invention, but any. equivalentcutting devices, such as may the shaft 4, may be emplo ed. The bearing supports or the tool-carrying shaft 4 and a plate 21. tratedas a be carried by The bracket 20 is illuswhereby the snugness of the be conveniently adjusted by a clamping screw 26, to the end that all vibration or chattering of the tool-carryin shaft 4 may be avoided. The plate 21 is firmed with a flat clamping surface on one of its faces and with a boss 28 on its opposite face about the threaded bore 31 provided for the threaded end of the shaft 4. The bearing'for the threaded end of theshaft 4 is also split as shown, and the boss 28 provided with lugs 30 and a clampin the tightness of t bearing fit may e bearing. Both of the bearing members 20 and 21 are provided with slots 34 for receiving bolts 36 whereby the members' may be secured in fixed reiation to the cylinder 38 which is to be reored.
For the purpose of locating the tool-carry ing shaft 4 with its axis alined central y with the center line of the cylinde1L38 a pair of auxiliary bearing blocks or centering devices .40 is provided. Each block 40 is bored to fit the shaft 4, and its outer edge is of slightly conical form, tapering from a diameter slightly less to a diameter slightly greater than that of the average diameter of cylinder to be operated upon.
comprise a bearing bracket 20.
goose-neck frame terminating ina spht bearing 22 providedfwith lugs 24 screw 32 for regulating In the use of the device, both heads of the cylinder are removed and the centering blocks 40 are fitted into the opposite ends of the cylinder here, as illustrated in Fig. 2.
The bearing members 20 and 21 are loosely bolted in approximately the position shown, and the shaft 4 is then passed through the bearing 22, the blocks 40 and into, the threaded boss 28, the blocks 40 thereby causing the axis of the shaft ito assume a position in accurate alinement with the axis of the cylinder bore, and at the same time bringing the bearing members 20 and 21 into the correct position for supporting the shaft in said alinement. The bearing members 20 and 21 are next clamped by the bolts 36 in fixed position and the shaft 4 is then withdrawnin order to remove the centering blocks 40, after which the boring tool 2 is applied to the shaft 4 and the latter then placed in operativeposition to bring the tool within the cylinder. After adjusting the tool properly, operation of the crank causes the tool to cut along the interior surface of the cylinder and at th'esame time be fed lengthwise therein, due to the engagement of the threaded end of the shaft 4 with the threaded bore 30 of the bearing member 21, and the shaft being maintained always in perfect alinement centrally in the cylinder because of the previous accurate alinement of its bearings insures that the cutting of the tool will be carried out accurately about the axis of the cylinder bore. After the tool has been fed entirely through the cylinder, the. shaft may be retracted and the operation repeated as often as may be necessary, with the cutter advanced slightly b adjustment of the screws 14 and 16.
From the foregoing it will be ap arent that I have devised a simple and effective means for carrying out the objects of my invention, and while I have illustrated and described what now appears to be the preferred form thereof, I reserve the right to such changes and modifications as may fairly fall within the scope of the appended claims.
I claim:
1. The herein-described method of positioning and mounting a cutter for re-boring sitioning said adjustable bearings, and then cylinders which consists in providing temporary bearings for the cutter shaft inside the cylinder to locate the axis of said shaft in alinement with the axis of the cylinder ore, side the cylinder for the shaft as alined.
2. The herein-described method of positioning and mounting a cutter for re-boring cylinders which consists in providing adjustable bearings for the cutter shaft outside the cylinder and temporary centering bearings for said shaft inside the cylinder to locate the axis of the shaft in alinement with the axis of the cylinder bore, mounting said shaft in said bearings and thereby po- I responding to that and then providing fixed bearings outhearings in adjusted fixing said adjustable the temporary bearposition and removing ings.
